  OCT 14 SOUTHLAND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hayden Ray, Central Arkansas, Jr., Kicker, Bryant, Ark.,...Ray converted on field-goal attempts from 34, 39, 25 and 39 yards and his two kicks in the final eight minutes helped seal the 40-31 decision over the Cowboys. The Bryant. Ark., native is 9-for-9 on field-goal attempts and 17-of-18 on extra-point tries this season.   Breylin Smith threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns and Central Arkansas beat McNeese 40-31 on Saturday. McNeese led 24-20 when Cody Orgeron threw a 32-yard touchdown to Trevor Begue with 25 seconds before halftime. In the third quarter, Smith threw a 78-yard TD to Tyler Hudson to put the Bears up 27-24. After forcing the Cowboys to turn it over on downs, backup Luke Hales entered and threw a 19-yard touchdown for a 10-point lead.

On McNeese's next possession, Orgeron led a 14-play, 75-yard drive that ended when he threw a 4-yard TD pass to Louis Conerly to bring the Cowboys within 34-31. Hayden Ray kicked field goals of 25 and 39 yards for a 40-31 Central Arkansas (4-2, 2-1 Southland Conference) lead. Meanwhile McNeese (3-4, 1-3) suffered a fumble, an interception and turnover on downs in its last three possessions. Hudson finished with 113 receiving yards with four receptions and two touchdowns. The redshirt freshman surpassed the 1,000-yard mark passing on the season.   Redshirt freshman Will McElvain threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Weston, and Trevor Allen and Tyler Hoosman ran for scores, as Northern Iowa held off Youngstown State 21-14 in a Missouri Valley Football Conference opener between two ranked teams on Saturday. McElvain staked the Panthers (3-2), ranked 13th in the FCS Coaches poll, to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when he capped an eight-play, 80-yard drive with his TD toss to Weston. McElvain directed an eight-play, 79-yard drive - ended by Allen's 10-yard TD run - to push Northern Iowa's lead to 14-0 with 5:07 left in the second quarter. On the ensuing possession for the 17th-ranked Penguins (4-1), Nathan Mays needed just one play - a 75-yard scoring strike to Jermiah Braswell - to halve the lead at 14-7. But the Panthers took the kickoff and marched 75 yards, with Hoosman running it in from the 15-yard line for a 21-7 halftime lead.

The only scoring in the second half came on Youngstown State's opening drive of the third quarter. Mays completed all four of his passes in an eight-play, 75-yard drive, accounting for 56 yards with the last 14 coming on a scoring toss to Kendric Mallory that pulled the Penguins within 21-14. McElvain finished 10-of-20 passing for 235 yards and a TD for the winners. Allen had a game-high 74 yards rushing on 16 carries. Weston had three receptions for 108 yards. Mays completed 17 of 23 passes for 239 yards and two scores for Youngstown State. The Penguins were held to 55 yards on the ground on 36 carries. - AP College Football

He also ran for 105 yards on 16 carries to lead the Panther rushing attack.   SEPT 16/WEEK 3 SOUTHLAND SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Central Arkansas' Hayden Ray, Jr., Kicker, Bryant, Ark.,...Ray was flawless for the Bears in their Southland Conference opener, hitting field goals of 21, 37 and 23 yards while knocking both of his extra points through the uprights. The final boot gave UCA a 31-30 lead with 90 seconds remaining as the Bears completed their third fourth-quarter comeback in as many games this season. Both his scoring grabs came in the fourth quarter, erasing a 16-10 Governor lead. Through two games, Winningham has been "Mr. Fourth Quarter" with five catches for 196 yards and four touchdowns. His three scoring grabs were for 23, 20 and 80 yards, the last of which tied the game in the fourth quarter. Winningham's 222 receiving yards were the most by an FCS wideout through opening weeknd and went down as the fourth-most in a single game in program history. Trailing 14-0 in the first quarter, he made a diving interception to halt WKU's drive at the Bears' 30-yard line. Rochell recorded one of his pass break ups on the Hilltoppers' final drive, which ended on downs with just under a minute left.   Will McElvain passed 17 yards to Isaiah Weston for the game's only touchdown early in the fourth quarter and lifted Northern Iowa to a 13-6 victory over Idaho State on Saturday. McElvain scrambled to his right then back across the field before finding Weston in the left end of the end zone with 14:14 remaining. Austin Evans and Bryce Flater picked off passes later in the quarter to thwart the Bengals (1-2). Omar Brown also had an interception for the FCS No. 8 Panthers (2-1) and Elerson Smith collected three sacks including one on Idaho State's final possession. Kevin Ryan kicked two field goals for the Bengals before Matthew Cook hit one for the Panthers to cut Idaho State's lead to 6-3 at halftime. Cook added a 20-yarder with 2:11 remaining in the game. He is perfect on eight attempts this season. - AP College Football

  SEPT 9/WEEK 2 MISSOURI VALLEY FOOTBALL NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: QB Will McElvain, UNI, 5-11, 197, Fr., Des Moines (Iowa) Lincoln High,...McElvain went 17-of-25 for 262 yards and three touchdowns to lead UNI to a 34-14 victory over Southern Utah. He was 14-of-20 for 234 yards and three TDs before the half when the Panthers took their foot off of the gas pedal. He completed six of his first eight passes and threw three touchdowns to three different receivers while not throwing an interception. He also ran for 23 yards on eight carries. He was on the passing end of Deion McShane's circus catch and play that ended up the No. 6 play on ESPN SportsCenter's Top 10 Saturday night. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

  Carlos Blackman scored two touchdowns, including a 3-yard run to give Central Arkansas its first lead with 1:30 to play, and the Bears beat Abilene Christian 31-30 on Saturday night. Blackman finished with eight carries for 16 yards and added a career-high 12 receptions for 82 yards and a TD. The senior running back came into the game with 35 career catches. Breylin Smith was 36-of-53 passing for 367 yards and Lujuan Winningham had 119 yards receiving and a score on six receptions for Central Arkansas (3-0). Smith hit Blackman for a 10-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter and BeSean McCoy ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 17-all.

Blair Zepeda - whose 42-yard field goal in the second quarter was the first of his career - hit a 51-yarder fewer than 90 seconds later and Luke Anthony's 20-yard TD pass to Tyrese White gave ACU (1-2) a 27-17 lead with 11:07 remaining. Smith hit Winningham for a 20-yard score 58 seconds later and Zepeda added a 33-yard field goal to make it 30-24 with 5:28. Blackman's go-ahead TD run capped a nine-play, 72-yard drive. Zepeda's 46-yard attempt with 35 seconds left fell short. Juan Jackson, a 2018 first-team all-Southland Conference selection at defensive back for Central Arkansas, was ejected after a targeting foul midway through the fourth quarter. Luke Anthony was 24 of 41 for 322 yards and a score and Tracy James had 21 carries for 84 yards and two touchdowns for ACU. - AP College Football
