California freshman Jaydn Ott turned in the best rushing performance of the season with 274 yards and three touchdowns on just 19 carries against Arizona. Ott had TD runs of 73, 72 and 18 yards Saturday while running for the most yards since Tyrion Davis-Price of LSU went for 287 on 36 carries against Florida on Oct. 16, 2021. It was the sixth 200-yard rushing game in the Bowl Subdivision this season and Cal's top rushing total since Jahvid Best had 311 yards against Washington in 2008. - AP College Football

Jaydn Ott ran for 274 yards and three touchdowns and California opened Pac-12 play with a 49-31 victory over Arizona on Saturday. Ott scored on a 73-yard run on the second play from scrimmage, an improbable 18-yarder in the third quarter after he had appeared to be stopped for a short gain, and then another 72-yarder to ice it late in the fourth. Ott had the third most rushing yards in school history, trailing only Jahvid Best's 311 against Washington in 2008 and Jerry Drew's 283 against Oregon State in 1954.

Jack Plummer added three TD passes for the Golden Bears (3-1, 1-0), who won their sixth straight home game. It's their longest winning streak at Memorial Stadium since a nine-gamer in 2008-09. Cal also ended a six-game skid against Arizona (2-2, 0-1) by beating the Wildcats for the first time since 2009. Jayden de Laura threw for 401 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats (2-2, 0-1), who had no answers defensively and lost their 12th straight conference road game. A year after Arizona beat COVID-depleted Cal 10-3 at home for its only win in 2021, the teams exceeded that point total after both teams scored touchdowns on the opening drive. It was a back-and-forth, high-scoring affair in the first half with Ott scoring on a 73-yard run on the second play from scrimmage to set the tone. - California/AP College Football

Jaydn Ott scored two touchdowns, one on the ground and one through the air, and California's defense stiffened late to lead the Bears to a 20-14 victory over UNLV on Saturday. Cal (2-0) made three fourth-down stops in the second half, including a fourth and goal opportunity for the Rebels from the Cal 8 with 2:46 remaining that preserved Cal's six-point lead. UNLV got the ball back one more time with 1:03 remaining, but Isaiah Young intercepted UNLV quarterback Doug Brumfield deep in Cal territory on the game's final play. Jack Plummer threw for 278 yards and a touchdown as the Golden Bears got off to a fast start on offense. But after taking a 20-7 lead on a Dario Longhetto field goal midway through the third quarter, Cal's offense stalled and UNLV (1-1) grabbed momentum.

Aidan Robbins rushed for 84 yards for UNLV, including a 31-yard score in the third that brought the Rebels to within 20-14. Three times Cal drove to UNLV's 10-yard line or deeper and didn't get touchdowns. The Bears settled for two field goals and Plummer was intercepted on the third drive. After being held to minus-1 yard of offense in the first quarter last week against UC Davis, the Bears got off to a fast start Saturday and led 14-0 after the first. Plummer completed his first eight passes and consistently found open receivers against a UNLV secondary that also was called for pass interference three times in the game. Ott scored on a 2-yard run and added a 12-yard touchdown catch later in the first, taking a short pass in the flat and making a leaping dive into the end zone on a fourth-and-2 play to give Cal a 14-0 lead. Kyle Williams got UNLV on the board with an 11-yard touchdown catch on the first play of the second quarter, but Dario Longhetto's 20-yard field goal gave Cal a 17-7 lead at halftime. - California/AP College Football

California defensive lineman Brett Johnson will miss a second straight season after going down with a lower-body injury. Coach Justin Wilcox said Saturday that Johnson got hurt in practice on Thursday and will miss the entire season. Cal said the injury is unrelated to the broken hip Johnson suffered in a car accident that forced him to miss the 2021 season. "Brett is one of the toughest and most dedicated football players I have ever been around," Wilcox said. "Although this is a difficult situation for him, I am confident that he will return to the field in 2023. He has the unwavering support of all his coaches, teammates and everyone in our football program. It is important for us to rally around each other as a team and respond positively to this adversity." Johnson was a preseason pick for the Pac-12 second team by the coaches. He has 46 tackles, six tackles for loss and three sacks in 17 career games since arriving at Cal in 2019. - AP College Football

Tobias Merriweather moves quickly. The four-star wide receiver recruit from the Portland suburb of West Camas, Wash., showed that on the football field during his decorated high school career. He also showed it on the track, where he ran a time of 21.80 in May to win the Washington state 4A 200-meter championship. Notre Dame came up empty in the transfer portal for wide receivers last offseason, but that doesn't mean the Irish didn't add an impact piece this June in Merriweather. What stands out about Merriweather, who has already added 13 pounds of muscle to his 6-foot-4, 198-pound frame since his arrival? "I think his talent," Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said. "You see him (and think): 'This kid's got a chance.' It goes way deeper than that. He's got an unbelievable work ethic. He got himself ready in two months to start … camp, which is a testament to his work ethic, a testament to a couple guys on our staff that have helped get him ready." Rees also cited receivers coach Chansi Stuckey for doing "a tremendous job" with flattening Merriweather's learning curve.

All that Notre Dame can throw at the lanky freshman, Merriweather seems willing to take on. "He's a kid that's hungry for it," Rees said. "He's going to do more. That's kind of innately who he is. He's going to want more and learn and ask questions and prepare the right way. As a young player, to have a chance, you have to have that to play right away. I think he possesses that." Asked in late June about Merriweather and whether he will be ready for meaningful action this fall, Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman didn't hesitate. "I think he's going to have to be," Freeman told NDInsider.com. "He's got a long body that we don't have probably other than (6-5 sophomore) Deion Colzie. So, I believe he'll be able to help us early." - South Bend Tribune

Last season, Byron Cardwell entered fall camp third or fourth on the Ducks' depth chart. A year later, he will likely be Oregon's starting running back after showing a lot of potential in limited snaps in 2021. Once CJ Verdell was lost for the 2021 season due to a lower leg injury, Cardwell began to receive more playing time. On 61 carries, he rushed for 417 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 6.8 yards per attempt.

Against Colorado last year, Cardwell recorded his first 100-yard game after going for 127 yards and a score on only seven carries. He was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in November after rushing nine times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in a win over Washington State. Two weeks ago, Cardwell was named to the 2022 preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. He was one of 10 Pac-12 running backs on the preseason watch list. Oregon will likely use multiple running backs, such as Noah Whittington and Mar'Keise Irving, but Cardwell has the potential to be one of the nation's top running backs. - Register Guard
