The Davidson Wildcats are the preseason favorites to win the Pioneer Football League for the upcoming 2022 season. Davidson received eight of the 11 first-place votes to earn 98 points in the poll. The Bulldogs came in at 10th with 30 points. Davidson has won a share of the last two PFL titles, which led to them appearing on top of the coaches' poll heading into the new season. Each head coach voted on the poll with 10 points going towards a first-place vote and one point less going to each succeeding place.

San Diego received three first-place votes to place second in the poll with 91 points. St. Thomas rounded out the top three with 78 points. Dayton landed in fourth place in the poll with 72 points. They finished ahead of Morehead State, a program that finished in a tie for third last season, yet were picked fifth in the 2022 preseason poll with 58 points. Marist was just behind Morehead State with 52 points and Drake followed in seventh with 42. Valparaiso (34 points) was picked to finish eighth. The Beacons were narrowly favored ahead of Stetson (33) and Butler (30), which were picked ninth and 10th, respectively. Presbyterian rounded out the 11-team preseason poll. - Butler Football

2022 PRESEASON WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST: QB Nick Howard, Dartmouth, Sr., 6-2, 230,...A 6-2, 230-pound senior from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Howard exploded on the Ivy League scene last year as primarily a rushing quarterback, piling up a team-high 787 yards on the ground (third in the Ancient Eight) while leading the conference in touchdowns (15, sixth nationally) and yards per carry (6.3, 14th). Those 15 rushing touchowns tied a Dartmouth record that has stood for over 90 years, and his season rushing average ranks as the third-best in program history.

When he had the opportunity to show off his arm, he performed admirably as well, connecting on 11-of-18 throws (61.1 percent) for 126 yards, a touchdown and one interception. His performance behind center earned him a spot on the All-Ivy League First Team. This season, Howard has been named one of the Big Green's three captains and is expected to play a larger role in the passing game with the graduation of Derek Kyler, who set several program records for passing accuracy. 2021 FIRST TEAM ALL-IVY LEAGUE (COACHES): Nick Howard, Dartmouth (Jr., QB - Green Bay, Wis.),...A 6-2, 230-pound junior from Green Bay, Wisconsin, Howard was named to the team as a running back after serving as primarily a wildcat quarterback for Dartmouth this fall. He led the Ivy League in rushing yards per carry (6.3, 16th in the FCS), scoring (90 points, 10th in the FCS) and rushing touchdowns (15, fifth in the FCS), the last of which tied a 92-year-old program record. His 787 rushing yards ranked third overall in the Ancient Eight, and he also completed 11 of his 18 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown, a 31-yard strike which was crucial to the 20-17 road victory at Harvard. - Dartmouth Football

Joey Suchy rushed for two touchdowns and Butler beat Marist 28-21 on Saturday for its first Pioneer Football League victory this season. Butler forced a Marist fumble at the goal line then went 99 yards to take a 21-14 lead on Suchy's 1-yard run. Trey Mason gave Butler a two-touchdown lead on a pick-6 with 5:22 left. Bret Bushka was 16-of-23 passing for 176 yards with two interceptions for Butler (3-8, 1-7). Bushka also rushed for 29 yards and one score. Suchy entered with just one touchdown on the season. Austin Day threw for 208 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Marist (5-5, 5-3). Nick Howard rushed for career highs of four touchdowns and 172 yards and Dartmouth beat Cornell 41-7 on Saturday. The win avenged a loss to the Big Red in Hanover in 2019 that cost Big Green a perfect season and outright Ivy League title. Dartmouth (8-1, 5-1), ranked 23rd in the FCS coaches poll and tied atop the Ivy, will finish its season at Brown next Saturday. Howard didn't score on his longest run of the day, but that 75-yard scamper set up his 2-yard score for a 21-0 lead. Derek Kyler's 8-yard pass to Dale Chesson with 13 seconds left in the half made it 28-0. Howard also scored on runs 5, 20 and 32 yards. His four-TD rushing game was the first for Dartmouth since 2017. The junior quarterback had 13 carries. Kyler, who handled most of the passing duties, was 14 of 18 for 182 yards. Chesson made seven catches for 106 yards. Dartmouth outgained Cornell 499-181. The only TD for the Big Red (2-7, 1-5) came on Devon Brewer's 1-yard run. - AP College Football

Nick Howard ran for three touchdowns, Derek Kyler passed for two and Dartmouth remained undefeated with a 38-21 victory over in-state rival New Hampshire on Saturday. Kyler was 20-of-25 passing for 326 yards while Howard, the Big Green's wildcat quarterback, rushed for 131 yards on 18 carries. Dartmouth had 634 yards offense, the most in at least a half-century. Howard had a pair of 6-yard touchdown runs to open the scoring, the latter coming after New Hampshire turned the ball over on downs at the Dartmouth 1-yard line. The Big Green drove 99 yards for the first time in 2008 to make it 14-0. Chris Davis added a career-long 51-yard field goal, a yard shy of the school record, and Kyler threw a 13-yard TD pass to Joe Kramer for a 24-7 lead after one quarter. Kyler's pass to Paxton Scott in the flat turned into a 52-yard score early in the third quarter and moved Kyler to third all-time in Big Green history with 34 career TD passes. Nick Howard rushed for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Dartmouth turned an interception and a blocked punt into points, defeating Penn 31-7 in an Ivy League opener for both teams Friday night. Dartmouth (3-0, 1-0), the 2019 Ivy League champs, struck early when Robert Crockett III scooped up a blocked punt deep in Penn territory for a 7-0 Big Green lead at 6:10 of the first quarter. That began a stretch of Dartmouth scoring three touchdowns and a field goal on its last four drives of the first half, taking a 23-7 lead into halftime.

Howard, who gained more than 100 yards for the second straight game, scored on runs of 7 and 1 yards. Zack Bair, who rushed for 91 yards, caught an eight-yard TD pass from Derek Kyler. Kyler completed 15 of 22 passes for 160 yards. Dartmouth has outscored opponents 100-28 in its three wins this season. The win was also a 65th birthday gift for coach Buddy Teevens and evens his record at 2-2 on games played on his birthday. Bret Bushka tossed three touchdown passes - including a 66-yarder to Yogi Flager - and Nick Orlando and Kavon Samuels both ran for two scores as Butler breezed to a 77-24 victory over NAIA-member Taylor on Saturday. Bushka completed 15 of 20 passes for 230 yards with one interception for the Bulldogs (2-1). Orlando ran six times for 105 yards and was 2-of-2 passing for 44 yards and a TD. Samuels carried 12 times for 57 yards. Bushka also had short TD throws to Johnny O'Shea and Jared Suchevits.

The Butler defense contributed two scoring plays - Daniel Obwaya's 10-yard fumble return TD that pushed the lead to 28-17 and an 11-yard fumble return score by Kellen Madison for the final points of the game. The Trojans jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on TD runs of 19 and 3 yards by Brendan Lamb. After Butler pulled even, Taylor regained the lead on a 42-yard field goal by Zane Shilts with 5:23 left in the quarter. But Samuels ripped off a 22-yard scoring run to put the Bulldogs up 21-17, igniting a 35-0 run. Flager finished with six catches for 142 yards. Bret Bushka threw two touchdown passes to Yogi Flager and Nick Orlando had three short TD runs to propel Butler to a 49-24 victory over Division III-member DePauw on Saturday. Bushka connected with Flager from 6 yards out in the first quarter and hit him for an 11-yard score in the second. Orlando ran it in from a yard out to open the scoring and added a 2-yard TD run in the second as the Bulldogs (1-1) took a 28-7 halftime lead. Kavon Samuels and AJ Deinhart added third-quarter scoring runs and Orlando capped the Bulldogs' effort with a 1-yard TD in the fourth. Bushka completed 11 of 13 yards for 161 yards with one interception. He also carried eight times for 105 yards. Samuels added 101 yards on 23 totes. Flager had four catches for 95 yards. Highlights from his senior season include an 11-catch, 143 yard performance at home vs. Valparaiso. His longest reception came on the road at Marist for a gain of 46. Placekicker Drew Bevelhimer earned the award for the second time in his BU career. He landed on the All-PFL second team in 2018, but was a first team selection back in 2017. Bevelhimer made 10 field goals this season, including a career-long 52 yard attempt at Marist. He led the PFL and ranked sixth nationally in field goal percentage (83.3). The Indianapolis native had three-game winning field goals in his career including one this year vs. Valparaiso. Bevelhimer set the Butler single-season field goal record in 2017 by making 16 attempts.
