  03/12/20 - Kedon SlovisrSr/2024, Brigham Young, 6-3, 223 (DS#16 QB) + More +

The last two No. 1 quarterbacks at USC stood side by side, observing from behind the fray as the first deep balls of spring soared from the right arms of Matt Fink, the returning redshirt senior, and Brad Aoki, a 5-foot-8 converted quarterback wearing a yellow No. 36 jersey. As spring practice opened at USC, with no assurance it would continue on through next month due to the rapid spread of coronavirus, Kedon Slovis and JT Daniels, the two presumably vying for the starting job, both had injury questions of their own, on a roster short on other options.

For Slovis, any doubts were quelled just a few minutes later, as he rejoined USC's first team offense and laced several throws that reminded why he was named Pac-12 offensive freshman of the year. After injuring his elbow in the Holiday Bowl, there was some concern over how healthy he would be for the start of spring. "I feel better honestly," Slovis said on Wednesday. "If anything, I've been working a lot in the offseason and developing hip flexibility and mobility. It takes a lot of pressure off my arm. My arm was getting pretty tired." Just to be safe, USC will continue to monitor Slovis' reps throughout camp. But the rising sophomore quarterback said he finally felt at full strength early last week. - Los Angeles Times

Freshman Kedon Slovis passed for a school-record 515 yards and threw four touchdown passes in Southern California's 52-35 victory over UCLA on Saturday in the 89th edition of their crosstown showdown. Michael Pittman Jr. caught two touchdown passes and Vavae Malepeai rushed for two scores as the Trojans (8-4, 7-2 Pac-12) wrapped up their regular season with their 16th win in the last 21 meetings with UCLA. Drake London and Tyler Vaughns also caught TD passes, and a school-record four Trojans receivers topped 100 yards receiving while USC survived a tumultuous second half at the Coliseum and eliminated the rival Bruins (4-7, 4-4) from bowl contention.

Slovis carried the Trojans to the Victory Bell with another landmark performance in his impressive debut season. He surpassed Matt Barkley's single-game USC records against UCLA and against any opponent in the fourth quarter while the Trojans racked up 643 yards of offense, and he also surpassed the school record for yards passing in a freshman season. A year after UCLA's Joshua Kelley broke the crosstown showdown's rushing yardage record, Slovis broke its passing record while leading USC to its 10th win in UCLA's last 11 visits to the Coliseum. Slovis also had his third consecutive 400-yard passing game - another first in USC's lengthy history. Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 367 yards with TD throws to Demetric Felton, Devin Asiasi and Chase Cota for the Bruins, who will finish with four consecutive losing records for the first time since 1921-24, shortly after the school was established in 1919. Asiasi finished with a career-high 141 yards receiving. - AP College Football

BYU has extended the contract of coach Kalani Sitake through the 2023 season. The school said Monday that the extension adds three years to the original deal Sitake signed after taking over the program in 2015. Sitake is 26-23 overall in his fourth season with the Cougars and has also led BYU to three bowl games. The Cougars accepted an invitation to this year's Hawaii Bowl after beating Idaho State 42-10 on Saturday. "We believe in him and the direction of the program," BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a release. "Together we are committed to creating a bright future for BYU football."

Sitake is the first former player under longtime BYU coach LaVell Edwards to become the school's head football coach. He played for the Cougars as a fullback in 1994 and again from 1997 to 2000 following a two-year LDS mission. Before becoming BYU's 14th head coach in December 2015, Sitake served as a defensive coordinator at Utah and Oregon State. Sitake expressed his appreciation to Holmoe and the university administration. "I love our players, coaches and fans and I'm excited about the future of BYU football," he said in a statement. BYU (6-4) has wins this season over USC, Tennessee, and No. 20 Boise State. The Cougars face UMass on Saturday. - AP College Football

Jaren Hall was 12-of-16 passing for 214 yards and ran for two touchdowns -- all before halftime -- and Baylor Romney threw for 191 yards and two scores to help BYU beat Utah State 42-14 on Saturday night. Hall, who finished with seven carries for 54 yards, suffered a concussion in the first half and was replaced by Romney to start the third quarter. Hall, a redshirt freshman who plays baseball as well for the Cougars, also left BYU's Oct. 12 game against South Florida -- his only other career start -- with concussion-like symptoms.

Utah State (4-4) went three-and-out on the game's opening possession before the Cougars ripped off an 11-play, 93-yard drive capped by Aleva Hifo's 6-yard touchdown run. Jordan Love's 26-yard TD pass to Siaosi Mariner tied it late in the first quarter but Hall scored on runs of 16 and 7 yards in the second quarter before Gerold Bright's 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in the half made it 21-14 at the half. Romney led a seven-play, 75-yard drive to open the third quarter culminating with his 11-yard TD pass to Micah Simon and, after the Aggies went three-and-out, Romney's 1-yard scoring pass to Gunner Romney made it 35-14 going into the fourth. It was the first brother-to-brother touchdown in BYU (4-4) history. Love was 29-of-49 passing for 394 yards and a TD but threw three interceptions. - BYU/AP College Football

  10/20/19 - Matt BushmanrSr/2021, Brigham Young, 6-5, 245 (DS#14 TE) + More +

Baylor Romney threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start to help BYU upset No. 14 Boise State 28-25 on Saturday night and snap a three-game losing streak. The Cougars turned to Romney, their third-string quarterback, with Zach Wilson and Jaren Hall both sidelined with injuries. He threw two scoring passes to Matt Bushman and helped deliver a second home win for BYU (3-4) over a Top 25 opponent this season. Chase Cord, Boise State's No. 2 quarterback, got the call with Hank Bachmeier out because of an injury. He struggled in his first career start, throwing for 185 yards, two touchdowns, and a pair of interceptions.

Boise State (6-1) was dealt a serious blow to its New Year's Six bowl hopes with the team's first loss to BYU since 2015. The Broncos trimmed an 18-point deficit to three late in the fourth quarter. Cord hit Octavius Evans with a 13-yard TD pass and then Akilian Butler with a 5-yard TD pass to make it 28-25 with 3:17 remaining. The Cougars were able to run out the clock after Austin Kafentzis picked up a yard on 4th-and-inches from the BYU 34 with 2:17 left. BYU took its first lead at 14-10 early in the third quarter when Sione Finau took an option pitch and raced 46 yards untouched for the score. Then the Cougars dug into the bag of tricks to pull away. Romney hit Bushman with a pair of touchdown passes to extend BYU's lead to 28-10 late in the quarter. - BYU/AP College Football
