  09/25/21 - Matt McDonaldrSr/2023, Bowling Green, 6-2, 211 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Quarterback Matt McDonald ran for a pair of scores, and two late interceptions by the Bowling Green defense sealed the win as the Falcons shocked heavily-favored Minnesota, 14-10, on homecoming Saturday. The loss snapped Minnesota's streak of 21 straight non-conference wins, the longest streak in the country entering Saturday's game. The Gophers' last non-conference loss was Sept. 3, 2015 against TCU. It also marked Minnesota's first loss to a non-Power 5 conference opponent since losing to North Dakota State on Sept. 24, 2011. "Give Bowling Green a lot of credit," said Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck. "I know how excited they are, and they deserve it and they earned it. We did not deserve to win that football game whatsoever." Bowling Green came to Minneapolis as 31-point underdogs but used a strong defensive effort to slow down the Golden Gopher offense.

Minnesota's fans booed their team at numerous points in the game, while Falcons players jumped on the field in celebration after the upset was complete. "I couldn't be more happy for a group of kids that have really been through a lot," said Bowling Green head coach Scott Loeffler. "We've got the 24-hour rule. We're going to celebrate for 24 hours, and then we're going to get back to the office." The Gophers had the ball with a chance to take the lead late in the fourth quarter after Bowling Green failed to fall on a muffed punt by Minnesota's Trey Potts. But one play after recovering the fumble, quarterback Tanner Morgan lofted a deep interception into the hands of Devin Taylor with 2:13 remaining. Morgan threw another pick with 17 seconds remaining. The Gophers' passing game struggled all day against the Falcons. Morgan was just 5-of-13 for 59 yards. - Bowling Green/AP College Football

Matt McDonald threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Bowling Green ended a 10-game losing streak with a 27-10 win over FCS-level Murray State on Saturday. The Falcons (1-2), who went 0-5 in the pandemic shortened 2020 season, dominated the second half behind McDonald, outscoring the Racers 17-0. Bowling Green took the opening drive of the second half and went 71 yards in 13 plays, capped by McDonald's plunge over the right side.

Another lengthy drive led to Nate Needham's second field goal in the closing seconds of the third quarter. A third long drive, capped by McDonald flipping a 5-yard clincher to Taron Keith, wrapped it up in the middle of the fourth quarter. McDonald finished 22 of 28 for 221 yards with an interception. Bowling Green had 210 yards in the second half to 83 for Murray State and a 2-to-1 advantage in time of possession. Damonta Witherspoon scored the Racers' touchdown on a 6-yard run in the second quarter. Murray State finished with 201 total yards. - Bowling Green/AP College Football

Connor Bazelak squeezed a full day of production into one half Saturday as he led Missouri to a 59-28 victory over Southeast Missouri. Bazelak completed 21 of 30 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns for the Tigers (2-1). He spread the ball to 10 receivers and connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass to D'onte Smith and a 52-yard TD pass to Chance Luper. Missouri running back Tyler Badie entered the game as the national leader in yards from scrimmage with 392.

He played sparingly Saturday against an overmatched FCS opponent, but he made the most of his limited chances, rushing nine times for 81 yards and two touchdowns and catching two passes for 14 yards and another score. Missouri built a 38-0 halftime lead. In the second half, Brady Cook and Tyler Macon played quarterback for the Tigers. On his first career pass attempt, Macon connected with JJ Hester down the middle on a 65-yard touchdown. Quarterback CJ Ogbonna carried 12 times for 96 yards for SEMO (0-3). Shamenski Rucker scored two rushing touchdowns for the Redhawks. - Missouri Football/AP College Football

BGSU is coming off a 38-6 season opening loss in front of 80,000 fans at Tennessee that saw the Falcons shut out the Volunteers in the second quarter, trailing by just one possession, 14-6, at halftime. "There were some great moments," Loeffler said. "The second quarter in particular, I think all three phases played superior together, and we did some really good things. I thought defensively we tackled better, but still giving up a few too many big plays. "Offensively, we struggled running the football. I thought we threw the football and protected fairly well. I thought (senior quarterback) Matt McDonald played well along with (linebacker) Darren Anders on the other side of the football." McDonald completed a career-high 25 passes, surpassing his previous best of 17 against Buffalo in 2020.

His offense did so well in the second quarter, they controlled the pace and kept Tennessee's offense off the field. "We kind of got in and out of different tempos and throwing out of the pocket - a lot of sprint outs. They were easy 'gimmes,'" McDonald said. "I looked over during that drive and I saw their defensive line exhausted, and they had to sub out. It was a cool sight to see. "It's something that this team has to build on. The sky's the limit for this team. We've just got to build off this and become more confident going forward," McDonald continued. - Sentinel Tribune

Just about every Missouri football player has answered an interview question about Connor Bazelak over the past few months. That's par for the course of being the starting quarterback for a Southeastern Conference program on the rise, especially for a player whose personality differs from the head coach responsible for putting Bazelak in that dignified position. Eli Drinkwitz's role in Bazelak's elevation from ACL surgery a little less than 20 months ago to one of the league's top passers will be on display from play No. 1 against Central Michigan in the Tigers' season opener Sept. 4.

Drinkwitz is the bombastic savant who jokes "Twitter isn't real" at press conferences. Bazelak isn't nearly as outspoken publicly, but his methodical strategy is effective. "Just a guy who is in total control," Missouri wide receiver Keke Chism said of Bazelak. "He's already a great leader, being so young. Just for him, it was all about taking that next step, and I feel like he's done that within this offense. He's learned so much in so little time to where he has total control of this offense. "And we're 100% behind him. You look at a guy that's going to be able to go to the line of scrimmage and dissect defenses and be able to make changes on the fly to put us in the right situations to be successful. So having a quarterback like that ultimately gives you a step ahead of your competition." - Columbia Daily Tribune

Virginia Tech safety Devin Taylor is no longer with the football team, according to coach Justin Fuente. Fuente made the announcement at his press conference on Wednesday. "I'm not sure what his future plans are, but we will be moving on this season without him," Fuente said. "We wish him the best in his future endeavors." Taylor was limited to open fall camp because of a leg injury he suffered at the end of spring. He was competing for the starting spot alongside Devon Hunter at boundary safety. Fuente declined to elaborate on the situation other than saying there was an undisclosed issue that came up recently. "It was something over the last couple of days that we had dealt with and we are moving forward," Fuente said.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder transferred to Virginia Tech in August last year from Illinois State. He earned All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first-team honors in 2019 at corner. He led the league with 24 passes defended and had five interceptions. Taylor ended up moving to safety a few weeks into the season with Tech's secondary dealing with a wave of absences from COVID-19 protocols. He started the team's last eight games at boundary safety and had 55 tackles (36 solo) with two interceptions and four passes defended. - Roanoke Times

  08/09/21 - Joey CarrollrSo/2024, Bowling Green, 6-5, 265 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Offensive lineman Joey Carroll has left the Bowling Green State University football program and entered the portal transfer. Carroll, a St. Francis de Sales graduate, is a sophomore who played in all five games for the Falcons last fall. The 6-foot-6, 270-pound lineman played in three games as a true freshman in 2019 before redshirting. Carroll was moved from tight end to the interior offensive line before the start of the 2020 season. Carroll originally committed to play at the University of Toledo as a junior at St. Francis in April of 2018. Carroll also had offers from Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, and Army, among others. - Toledo Blade

There's a clear No. 1 quarterback entering camp in Bazelak, which takes the biggest question coach Eli Drinkwitz had to answer last season already off the table. Bazelak showed maturity as the signal-caller, good enough to win co-Southeastern Conference freshman of the year honors in 2020 alongside Auburn's Tank Bigsby. Drinkwitz and Bazelak admitted last year that there was more potential in the team's passing game, as Drinkwitz had limited time with his team because of the coronavirus prior to taking the field against Alabama. That's not the case this season.

Bazelak has had a full offseason, now nearly two years removed from ACL surgery, to hone his game and find ways to become a top-tier quarterback in the SEC. Drinkwitz has seen plenty of great signal-callers in-person in his coaching career - Cam Newton, Ryan Finley and Zac Thomas to name a few. He believes Bazelak has the same level of potential. Should the Dayton, Ohio, native show it in 2021, Missouri would reap the benefits. - Columbia Daily Tribune

As Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz opens his second preseason camp Friday, he's got one crucial box already checked. "We have a commodity at the quarterback position," he recently said. Only a few peers across the Southeastern Conference can say the same heading into the start of practices. But at Mizzou, for the first time since 2018, the Tigers return their starter at the game's most important position. Connor Bazelak has appeared in games each of the last two seasons, but thanks to the NCAA's extra year of eligibility for all athletes, Bazelak technically returns as a redshirt freshman again this fall.

Last season, when he started the last eight games of MU's Southeastern Conference-only 10-game schedule, Bazelak was named the league's co-freshman of the year. At last month's SEC media days, Drinkwitz joked that Bazelak could win the award again this year. "I don't know if that's possible," he said. "But maybe with COVID exception it is...We're excited about the growth he can show and earn." Few SEC teams have the same luxury. Last year, SEC quarterbacks Mac Jones (Alabama) and Kyle Trask (Florida) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Heisman Trophy voting. Kellen Mond broke every significant career passing record at Texas A&M. All three have moved onto the NFL, leaving the SEC with a conspicuous void of star power at the position. - Post-Dispatch

  05/11/21 - Davon FergusonrSr/2024, Bowling Green, 5-09, 186 (DS#74 CB) + More +

A couple of former Kansas football players who left the program months ago finally have come out on the other end of the NCAA's transfer portal. Both defensive back Davon Ferguson and tight end James Sosinski announced their future football plans this week, with Ferguson heading to Bowling Green and Sosinski off to Nevada. Ferguson, a starter in the secondary for the KU defense in each of the first four games of 2020, entered the portal shortly after the season's completion. Even though Ferguson, a junior last year, missed the final five games for the Jayhawks (0-9), he finished sixth on the team with 27 total tackles. In what proved to be his final game in a KU uniform, Ferguson led the Jayhawks with nine total tackles in a loss at West Virginia. Sosinski, who could have potentially returned to KU as a super-senior, also entered the portal in December. - Lawrence Journal World

Since Bowling Green State University football coach Scot Loeffler was Boston College's offensive coordinator, he has kept a close watch on Tommy Guajardo. Boston College was the first Power Five program Guajardo received an offer from when he was a junior at Dearborn High School. When Loeffler took over the Falcons football program in 2019, he heavily recruited the tight end to BG's program. Eventually, Guajardo made the decision to commit to Michigan State University. He redshirted the 2020 season with the Spartans and participated in spring practice earlier this year. Two days after the spring season ended, Guajardo entered the transfer portal. Ten days later, he announced his commitment to BGSU.

"[Loeffler] was the first guy to hit me up when I entered the portal," Guajardo said. "And he [said] I can make an immediate impact. I'll play right away. He knows how good I can play at my position." A few other Mid-American Conference schools reached out to Guajardo, including Kent State and Eastern Michigan, but none of the other programs compared to BG. It was Loeffler's constant pursuit of Guajardo from his junior year at Dearborn to the present that helped him make the quick decision to join the Falcons. "I really do think that the connection that we have is really important," Guajardo said. "They keep coming back. At high school, they keep evaluating me, always come back to say hi to me, always calling me and texting me. I really do think that the connection is really important to me, and trust, too." - Toledo Blade
