  09/04/21 - George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#28 RB) + More +

The Broncos played their season opener without starting running back George Holani. Holani made the trip to Orlando and was on the field for warmups, but he had been limited in practice all week. "It was an injury. He just wasn't ready to go this week," Avalos said. "As much as we wanted him to play, he was not ready to go and we're not gonna jeopardize him for the season." Oregon transfer Cyrus Habibi-Likio got the start at running back, finishing with 12 carries for 23 yards. Senior Andrew Van Buren added 26 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, but the Broncos only collected 20 net rushing yards as a team. Holani missed much of last season after suffering a knee injury at Air Force, but he was healthy this spring and earned rave reviews from the coaches during fall camp. Avalos said he expects Holani to be ready to go next week against UTEP. - Idaho Statesman

The Broncos will also select a pair of captains on a game-by-game basis throughout the season. Shakir also served as a captain during the 2021 season. - Lewiston Tribune

  08/22/21 - Jack SearsrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-2, 213 (DS#999 QB) + More +

There's been another hiccup in the race to name Boise State's starting quarterback. Quarterback Jack Sears reaggravated a lower-leg injury that kept him out of practice last weekend, Boise State head coach Andy Avalos said Sunday. Sears did not play in the Broncos' first fall scrimmage on Saturday, but Avalos said the hope is that he'll be back on the field by the middle of this week at the latest.

Sears - who joined the team last year after transferring from USC - and Hank Bachmeier are competing for the starting job again this year. Avalos said on Sunday that they were neck and neck in terms of completion percentage and touchdown-to-interception ratio before Sears' injury, but now the competition is on hold until he's able to get back on the field. "The positive is we feel very confident we can win with both of these guys," Avalos told reporters. "The improvement in the overall operation of the offense is night and day for both of those guys. The operation has obviously increased throughout the whole offense because of that." - Idaho Statesman

  08/21/21 - Khalil ShakirSr/2022, Boise State, 6-0, 196 (DS#15 WR) + More +

Boise State had five players make the watch list for the Polynesian Player of the Year Award, which was released on Thursday. Shakir, nickel Kekaula Kaniho, running back George Holani, center Kekaniokoa Holomalia-Gonzalez and linebacker Ezekiel Noa all made the list. Shakir led the Broncos last season with 52 catches for 719 yards and six receiving touchdowns. In 2019, he led the team with 63 catches and scored 10 total touchdowns: six receiving, three rushing and one passing. He also was one of four Broncos who made the preseason All-Mountain West team, and he's on the watch lists for the Maxwell and Biletnikoff awards, given to the nation's top receiver. - Idaho Statesman

  08/21/21 - Tyler CrowerSr/2025, Boise State, 5-11, 233 (DS#999 FB) + More +

Running back Tyler Crowe has one of the largest social media followings among players on the Boise State football team, and he's cashing in with an endorsement deal. Crowe told local media members on Thursday that he signed an endorsement deal with sports supplement company Bucked Up before the Broncos began fall camp, and he has been promoting the brand on social media. He's the first Boise State player to publicly announce an endorsement deal since the NCAA passed an interim policy in July, allowing players to make money from their name, image and likeness.

Wide receiver Khalil Shakir confirmed at media days that he made some money from an autograph session that was sponsored by The Society LLC in July. Neither Shakir nor Crowe specified how much money they made. Crowe says he hasn't been that active in promoting Bucked Up since fall camp began on Aug. 4, but it's the first big company he signed with and he plans to produce a few more posts for his considerable number of followers as the season progresses. Crowe has almost 48,000 followers on TikTok and more than 5,700 on Instagram. It's safe to say he has a larger audience on social media than just about any of his teammates, but Crowe said quarterback Hank Bachmeier is the Boise State player who has the potential to really rake in some cash in the NIL era. - Idaho Statesman

  08/18/21 - JL SkinnerrSr/2023, Boise State, 6-4, 209 (DS#3 SS) + More +

Boise State safety JL Skinner spent time in the weight room in the offseason, adding a little more muscle to his 6-foot-4, 218-pound frame, and he's focused on improving his coverage skills. But he does not think either of those things is what will propel him to a breakout season. Skinner said Tuesday that his confidence is at an all-time high, and that took a lot of work after it was at an all-time low at the end of 2020. "As a DB, if you don't have confidence, it's going to be really hard to succeed," Skinner told reporters on Tuesday. "After this past season, I did a lot of reflecting on myself, and I started to build that confidence within myself again. I started to realize I'm able to play this position at a high level, and I just have to keep working."

Boise State ended last year's COVID-shortened season with a loss to San Jose State in the Mountain West championship game. The players voted not to play in a bowl game, which snapped the team's streak of 18 straight bowl appearances. The way it all ended just didn't sit right with Skinner. So while most of his teammates went home for Christmas break, he stayed on campus and got to work. The native of San Diego said he took two days off before getting back in the gym. He also said he spent the better part of a month and a half alone, training and reflecting on what could have been. "I felt disappointed in last year because I know what type of player I can be," he said. "I realized all the things I could have done last year that I didn't do, possibly because of my confidence. I just really started reflecting on myself and looked at everything I could have done differently." - Idaho Statesman

The newest member of Boise State's backfield - Oregon transfer Cyrus Habibi-Likio - is about a week into his first fall camp as a Bronco, but he's no stranger to the star of the team's stable of running backs. Redshirt sophomore George Holani was a junior in high school when he met Habibi-Likio. He was on an unofficial visit to Oregon, and Habibi-Liko - who spent four years with the Ducks before signing with Boise State in February - was his tour guide. They have stayed in touch ever since, and when Habibi-Likio put his name in the transfer portal in January, Holani played a role in bringing him to Boise State.

The 6-1, 210-pound redshirt senior joined the Broncos for voluntary workouts in June. "He's a great player, and he's definitely looking good out there," Holani said. "He's going to be able to teach me things, he's been doing a great job, and I think he's going to play a pretty big role in this offense." The Broncos were looking to improve their depth in the backfield after injuries and an offseason arrest left the team with few options. Boise State finished last in the Mountain West with 107.1 rushing yards per game. Holani played just one full game last year - the season opener against Utah State - and finished with 100 yards and a touchdown on the ground, as well as a receiving touchdown. He suffered a knee injury the following week at Air Force and missed the rest of the season, except for a short-lived return in the regular season finale at Wyoming. Holani never looked healthy in that final game, touching the ball just four times (3 carries, 1 catch) before exiting in the third quarter. - Idaho Statesman

  08/13/21 - Scale IgiehonSr/2022, Boise State, 6-2, 290 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Boise State nose tackle Scale Igiehon is rocking a slimmer, sleeker build as the Broncos take the field for practice this fall, and he can feel the difference. "I feel way faster, and I'm definitely stronger and quicker," said Igiehon, who credited new strength coach Reid Kagy and staff with transforming his body. "I kind of describe it as unlocking my potential as far as speed and quickness and strength. I feel great." At his peak, Igiehon weighed 348 pounds as a senior at Del Valle High in Texas, and he weighed a little over 300 during his first two years at Boise State. He slimmed down to 293 last season and checks in at 290 this fall, but he spent the past year not just focused on losing weight, but also on becoming more explosive. "It's going to help me in the pass-rush game and in the run game," Igiehon told reporters on Saturday after the Broncos' fourth practice of fall camp.

Igiehon's physical transformation couldn't come at a better time for him or the team. The 6-foot-2 Texas native is in his senior season - although he'll have the option of returning next year thanks to the NCAA's offer of extra eligibility because of the impact COVID-19 had on last season. After struggling to dress enough defensive linemen to meet the Mountain West's requirements at times last year, the Broncos are now poised to be flush at the position this fall. A healthy rotation should help keep all the big men up front fresh, and staying on the field later in games means more opportunities for Igiehon to make game-changing plays. - Idaho Statesman

  08/08/21 - Titus TolerrSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 201 (DS#999 SS) + More +

The University of Wisconsin secondary will be without a player defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard was high on this spring. Redshirt sophomore Titus Toler was not on the Badgers' 2021 roster, released Wednesday, due to a number of injuries that limited him to two games last season and held him out of spring practices open to reporters. He played against Illinois and Michigan last season, with his highlight play being an interception late in the 45-7 win against the Illini. Wisconsin senior linebacker describes why a player in the Badgers' secondary is the most underrated on the team A UW official said Toler is still a student at the university and is applying for a medical exemption to retain his season of eligibility.

Leonhard, who coaches UW's safeties, said Toler had rare physical traits and position flexibility the defensive coordinator was excited to put to use this fall. "Titus has worked at nickel for us as well, so we feel like he has some coverage, some corner ability," Leonhard said in March. "To me, it's flexibility. I love having flexibility. You look a couple years ago with like a Natrell Jamerson, who really was more a corner by trade with kind of freakish physical traits, too good to not have a huge role. And these guys (Toler and Travian Blaylock) are - I'm not going to say they're 'Jam' at this point - but from a physical standpoint, they can do things a little bit differently than some guys that are just true safeties, so I'm excited to battle them." - Journal Sentinel

  08/07/21 - CT ThomasrSr/2022, Boise State, 5-08, 168 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Boise State wide receiver CT Thomas was named to the Watch List for the 2021 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, Thursday. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the nation's college offensive player of the year who meets the award criteria. It encourages student-athletes to succeed on and off the field while having the drive and tenacity to persist and overcome adversity and injury in the pursuit of reaching their goals. The award honors the legacy of Texas legend Earl Campbell and recognizes his home community of Tyler, Texas.

To be considered, the offensive player must meet one or more of the following criteria: 1. Born in Texas; 2. Graduated from a Texas high school; or 3. Played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. The player must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that defined Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community and tenacity. Thomas has a reception in 37-straight games, the second-longest active streak in FBS. Last season, he appeared in all seven games, including five starts and recorded a career-long 75-yard touchdown against Air Force (Oct. 31). - Lewiston Tribune

Improving the running game means dependable depth in the backfield. The Broncos learned that the hard way last fall after they lost starting running back George Holani to a knee injury in the second game of the season and ended the year ranked last in the Mountain West with 107.1 rushing yards a game. Boise State was also without junior college transfer Taequan Tyler, who missed last season with an Achilles tendon injury he suffered in the preseason, and veteran running back Robert Mahone, who was suspended after an arrest for domestic battery and eventually left the team.

Tyler is expected to be full go in camp, and the Broncos hope to have addressed the lack of depth in the backfield with the addition of former Oregon running back Cyrus Habibi-Likio. He's one of six transfers who joined the team this year and has a chance to see the field early. Habibi-Likio left Oregon with 21 career rushing touchdowns. He was used primarily as a short-yardage back, but Boise State running backs coach Winston Venable isn't putting any limits on what he can do for the Broncos. "He has a bigger build, but he moves really well," Venable said. "He's not just a big, bruising running back. He's very agile, and he's a versatile player who can catch the ball out of the backfield." - Idaho Statesman
