  03/07/23 - Ashton JeantyJr/2025, Boise State, 5-08, 211 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty posted a career-high 178 rushing yards in the Broncos' 35-32 win over North Texas in the Frisco Bowl. Jeanty, a sophomore who played at Lone Star High in Texas, posted 821 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Since then, he's made the Broncos' weight room a second home. He's benching 335 pounds and squatting more than 500, and he said Monday that he's ready to build on last year. "Last year was a lot of learning and growing," Jeanty said. "I learned to push through and adapt to things. Whatever opportunities I get this year, I'm going to make the most of them and help the team win." George Holani decided to put the NFL on hold for a year and return for his redshirt senior season, but he's rehabbing from a shoulder injury and is limited at spring practice, opening the door for Jeanty to hog the starting reps. - Idaho Statesman

  01/18/23 - Cade BersefordrSr/2024, Boise State, 6-6, 302 (DS#40 OT) + More +

The Boise State football team announced Tuesday that eight players will return in 2023 as so-called super seniors. Linebacker DJ Schramm, edge rusher Demitri Washington, defensive end Cortez Hogans Jr., offensive linemen Garrett Curran and Cade Beresford, wide receivers Billy Bowens and Stefan Cobbs, and tight end Riley Smith will be back on The Blue this year. They're the latest seniors taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offered players because of the impact COVID-19 had on the shortened, disrupted 2020 season. Cobbs, Smith and Beresford previously announced their plans to return. - Idaho Statesman

  01/15/23 - Jake StetzrSr/2022, Boise State, 6-3, 302 (DS#36 OG) + More +

A pair of former Boise State football players have another shot at professional playing careers. Offensive lineman Jake Stetz and wide receiver Sean Modster were selected by the Arlington Renegades in the XFL Draft in November. They've relocated to Texas, and the team will hold its first practice Saturday. "I'm really excited to be part of a team again," Stetz told the Idaho Statesman on Friday. "It's professional football and it's a legit league. I'm excited but I'm also a little nervous to get back at it." The XFL will take its third stab at chipping away at the NFL's stranglehold on the market this year, and it's under new ownership. Former WWE star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson led a group that purchased the league from WWE owner Vince McMahon after it folded just five weeks into its second launch in 2020. McMahon initially launched the league in 2001, but it only lasted for one season. - Idaho Statesman

  01/14/23 - George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Let's be honest - there are too many athletes across this planet who receive far too much attention. Here in Boise, there is the curious case of George Holani. He deserves more. The Boise State running back is cherished around here, all deserved, but it's not enough. This is an athlete who should be worshiped, though a man of faith like Holani would never endorse such praise for simply playing a game. Holani is more than a football player - and what he did with seven simple words on Jan. 1 is all the evidence you need: "NEW YEAR SAME TEAM! (praying emoji) #NOTDONEYET" Holani committed to Boise State 1,567 days ago, has cranked out 3,426 yards of offense and 27 touchdowns in four seasons, and now plans to return for the 2023 season when most of us thought he was done with college football.

Holani is a good football player who had a 50-50 shot of landing on an NFL roster this spring. He's a better teammate, person and inspiration to all of sports in the Treasure Valley, and his quiet announcement to return didn't get the attention it deserved. It was a holiday. We were distracted. Too many other college football headlines. It's basketball season. Holani is quiet. He's never been a dynamic media personality. Some fans are ready to move on with a new batch of promising young running backs at Boise State. Whatever the reason, Holani deserves to be celebrated more because college football is different these days, when the real drama of the sport begins after the regular season ends. There are thousands of misguided players in the transfer portal. There are hundreds of dreamers leaving college early to pursue the NFL. - Idaho Press

  01/04/23 - George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#28 RB) + More +

The Boise State football team opened the new year with exciting news. Running back George Holani will return for another season. Holani, who just wrapped up the second 1,000-yard rushing season of his career, announced Sunday on Twitter that he will return for his redshirt senior season. He might have a future in the NFL, but he's putting that on hold.

Boise State fans got a glimpse of how dominant the Broncos' running game can be this season. Holani, quarterback Taylen Green and freshman running back Ashton Jeanty combined to post 316 rushing yards in back-to-back games against San Diego State and Fresno State. The Broncos ended the year ranked No. 2 in the Mountain West at 196.4 rushing yards a game. The Broncos' offense will be under the direction of new offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan, and he has plenty of pieces to work with. And the next few years could be exciting, especially with the College Football Playoff expanding in 2024. - Idaho Statesman

  12/04/22 - Chase PenryrSr/2026, Boise State, 6-0, 194 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Yet another Colorado football player is likely on his way out of Boulder. On Friday, receiver Chase Penry announced his intention to put his name into the NCAA transfer portal when the 45-window opens on Monday. Following a miserable season, the Buffs (1-11, 1-8 Pac-12) have already had five players announce their intention to enter the transfer portal. True freshman quarterback Owen McCown and fifth-year junior guard Casey Roddick announced their decisions earlier this week. Safety Isaiah Lewis and receiver Maurice Bell are also in the portal, but both are sixth-year seniors who need a medical hardship waiver to gain a seventh season and final year of eligibility. Penry played in 11 games a true freshman in 2021, catching eight passes for 86 yards and a touchdown. He also had three punt returns for 53 yards. - Daily Camera
