  03/22/21 - Markel ReedrSr/2025, Boise State, 6-0, 184 (DS#156 CB) + More +

Boise State will be without one of its top cornerbacks this spring as the Broncos search for replacements for starters Jalen Walker and Avery Williams. Junior Markel Reed said Friday that he will miss the spring after having surgery in January to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder, but he expects to be healthy in time for fall camp. "I'm watching the guys compete every single day," Reed told reporters on Friday. "They have their heads on right, they're grinding it out and it's a different vibe around here right now." Reed said he injured his shoulder during his freshman season in 2019 but played through it that year - appearing in 11 games - and again last season when he appeared in all seven games and finished with a career-high 16 tackles. The timing of the injury isn't ideal for the Broncos, who are lacking in experienced cornerbacks. Reed and redshirt juniors Tyric LeBeauf and Chris Mitchell are the veterans in the room, but none of them have started a game in their careers. - Idaho Statesman

  03/12/21 - Khalil ShakirSr/2022, Boise State, 6-0, 196 (DS#15 WR) + More +

The Boise State football team's top wide receiver will be limited in practice as the Broncos open spring ball on Friday. Khalil Shakir is still rehabbing after an injury he suffered during the Mountain West championship game last December against San Jose State. Boise State football coach Andy Avalos didn't go into the specifics about the injury Thursday, describing it as a "lower half injury," but he did say it required surgery. Shakir is one of just two starters who will not fully participate as spring practice opens. Shakir led the Broncos led season with 52 catches for 719 yards and six receiving touchdowns. - Idaho Statesman

  03/09/21 - Octavius EvansrSr/2022, Boise State, 6-1, 202 (DS#180 WR) + More +

Boise State wide receiver Octavius Evans feels like he has a new lease on life thanks to the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offered fall athletes because of the affects COVID-19 had on the 2020 season. After averaging more than 60 catches a season at Center High in Texas, he showed flashes of big-play ability while appearing in every game his freshman season at Boise State. But injuries and struggles on and off the field have kept him from landing a consistent role in the Broncos' offense.

Evans is one of eight super seniors expected to take the field Friday for the Broncos' first spring practice. He said the choice to return was an easy one to make, and he plans to take full advantage of the opportunity in front of him. "I definitely wanted to come back and finish what I started," he said. "I feel like there's still a lot I can do here, but I also came back to have fun and have that experience with my friends. You have to cherish those moments because football is going to end someday for everybody." Evans caught 15 passes in 14 games as a freshman, and he hauled in the first two touchdowns of his career. He's caught just 25 passes in the 21 games he's appeared in since his freshman year. - Idaho Statesman

  03/06/21 - Caleb BiggersrSr/2023, Boise State, 5-10, 202 (DS#96 CB) + More +

Boise State football coach Andy Avalos said on National Signing Day in February that he was open to adding transfers at a number of positions, and it didn't take him long to do just that. Former Bowling Green cornerback Caleb Biggers announced Thursday on Twitter that he has joined the Broncos' 2021 class. The native of Baltimore, Maryland, started 19 games at the Mid-American Conference school since 2018 and appeared in 25. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound junior started 15 consecutive games for the Falcons: 10 in 2019 and five last year in a season that was shortened because of COVID-19. He hasn't recorded an interception in his career, but he finished fourth on the team last fall with 26 tackles. - Idaho Statesman

  02/04/21 - George HolanirSr/2024, Boise State, 5-10, 208 (DS#28 RB) + More +

Quarterback Chase Cord will miss spring practice for the third year in a row, Boise State football coach Andy Avalos confirmed Thursday morning. Avalos also said defensive lineman Demitri Washington will miss spring ball as he continues to recover from a leg injury suffered last October during the Broncos' win at Air Force. On the bright side, Avalos said running back George Holani is healthy and ready to go this spring. The sophomore played in just one full game last season - the opener against Utah State - before suffering a knee injury the following week at Air Force. Holani posted 1,014 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman in 2019. "He's really excited for spring ball, and we can't wait to see him get going again," Avalos said. - Idaho Statesman
