  2019 ALL-OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): DL - Shaun Whittinghill, Austin Peay,...Few roads have been as winding as Shaun Whittinghill's, but it's culminated in a second-team All-OVC nod and a spot in the FCS playoffs for the fifth-year senior from Louisville. Once he cracked the rotation, he couldn't be removed and closed the regular season with authority, recording 2.5 of his four sacks and 7.5 of his 10 tackles for loss in the season's last five weeks.   JaVaughn Craig passed for two touchdowns and ran for another score, Baniko Harley scored three TDs, and Austin Peay beat Sacramento State 42-28 on Saturday in the second round of the FCS playoffs. Austin Peay plays at No. 5 seed Montana State in the quarterfinals. Craig was 18-of-28 passing for 204 yards with an interception and added 12 carries for 164 yards, including a 58-yard run that set up his 18-yard scramble for a score that gave the Governors (11-3) a 35-7 lead with 5:26 left in the third quarter.

Austin Peay punted on its first possession but then scored touchdowns on its next three drives. Craig hit DeAngelo Wilson for a 15-yard TD and Harley for a 3-yard score before a 45-yard touchdown run by Harley made it 21-0 late in the first quarter. The fourth-seeded Hornets (9-4) went three-and-out on their first four possessions and had just two first downs in the first half. The Governors, making their first appearance in the FCS playoffs, set a program record for wins in a season.   JaVaughn Craig threw two of this three touchdown passes in the third quarter when Austin Peay took control and rolled to a 42-6 win over Furman on Saturday in the Governors. first FCS playoff game. The game was delayed by weather several times. The Governors (10-3) play at fourth-seeded Sacramento State (9-3) next weekend. Craig completed a four-play 15-yard drive with a 15-yard pass to DeAngelo Wilson on the opening drive of the second half and 2 ½ minutes later dumped a pass over the middle to Kente Williams who went 73 yards to end zone. Turnovers set up the next two scores. On the first play after the long TD pass, Kordell Jackson recovered a fumble at the 33. Prince Momodu cashed that in with a 4-yard run after a pass play picked up 29. Tyriq Arties recovered a fumbled punt return at the 28 and on the fourth play Williams scored on a 1-yard run. Furman (8-5), making its 18th playoff appearance, came in as the No. 5 rushing team at 275.8 yards but picked up only 145 yards against the No. 5 run defense.   Four different schools took home the four major 2019 Ohio Valley Conference football awards in voting conducted by league head coaches and communication directors and announced on Tuesday. Tennessee State senior wide receiver/return specialist Chris Rowland was named Offensive Player of the Year, Eastern Kentucky senior defensive lineman Aaron Patrick was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year, UT Martin redshirt freshman quarterback John Bachus III was named the Freshman of the Year and first-year Austin Peay head coach Mark Hudspeth earned the Roy Kidd OVC Coach of the Year honor.

Austin Peay, which shared the OVC regular season championship (its first since 1977), had the most selections with 11 across the teams, including seven first-team picks, two second-team selections and two All-Newcomer honorees. UT Martin was second with 10 selections, including five first-team picks. The All-OVC first-team included 18 seniors, seven juniors and one sophomore while the second-team included 11 seniors, five juniors, 10 sophomores and one freshman. - Ohio Valley Football

  NOV 25 OHIO VALLEY OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JaVaughn Craig, QB, 6-2, 210, Sr., Chattanooga, Tenn., Austin Peay,...Craig accounted for 292 yards of total offense and five touchdowns as Austin Peay topped Eastern Illinois 35-7 to cap a 7-1 OVC season, win its first OVC Championship since 1977 and earn its first-ever playoff berth. The senior completed 15-of-28 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a team-best 57 yards and two additional scores. He had a 13-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to get the team on the board and added a nine-yard pass midway through the third quarter and a 40-yard strike five minutes later to cap the scoring.

His touchdown runs came on 5 and 19 yard runs in the second quarter. It marks the third time this season he has been named OVC Offensive Player of the Week. Craig ranks 12th nationally in passing yards per completion (14.26), 23rd in points responsible for (15.0/game) and 25th in passing touchdowns (22).   JaVaughn Craig threw three touchdowns and ran for two more and Austin Peay beat Eastern Illinois 35-7 for the Ohio Valley Conference championship on Saturday. Austin Peay (9-3, 7-1) owns the tiebreaker over Southeast Missouri State (9-3, 7-1) by virtue of its 28-24 win over the Redhawks on Oct. 12. Its only their second conference title, the last coming in 1977. The Governors -- ranked No. 19 in FCS -- set a single-season record for wins.

Craig threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Baniko Harley with 4:51 left in the first quarter for the game's first score. Darshon McCullough's 47-yard TD run eight seconds into the second tied it up. Craig followed up with a 5-yard scoring run after a 5-play, 76-yard drive less than two minutes later. Then, his 19-yard touchdown run 68 seconds before halftime made it 21-7. Austin Peay wrapped it up with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. The Governors (8-3, 6-1 Ohio Valley) scored on their first drive of the game when Momodu crashed in from a yard out, ending a 10-play, 75-yard drive. In the second quarter, Craig threw a 40-yard touchdown to Wilson with 9:48 before halftime. After intermission, Momodu ran it in from 10 yards for a 21-0 lead. The Racers got on the board when Preston Rice threw a 27-yard score to Jonathan Moss. Rice threw for 220 yards, a score and two interceptions. Austin Peay is in tie for first place with Southeast Missouri State (8-3, 6-1). The Governors beat the Redhawks 28-24 last month.   NOV 11 OVC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Josephus Smith, DL, 5-9, 285, R-Jr., Leeds, Ala., Austin Peay,...Smith had three tackles, all of which were for loss, including 2.0 total sacks in Austin Peay's 38-24 win over UT Martin. The win kept Austin Peay tied for first place in the OVC standings. His three stops led to 17 yards of lost offense for UTM. Smith anchored a defense that help the Skyhawks to -25 net rushing yards and equaled the school record with six total sacks.   Kentel Williams rushed for 118 yards and three touchdowns and Austin Peay breezed to a 38-24 victory over Tennessee-Martin on Saturday. After a scoreless first quarter, Austin Peay (7-3, 5-1 Ohio Valley Conference) caught fire in the second. Baniko Harley opened the scoring with a 7-yard TD run, capping a 10-play drive. The Governors stretched their lead to 14-0 when Kordell Jackson picked off a John Bachus III pass at their own 28-yard line. Two plays later Williams scored on a 67-yard run. Logan Birchfield's 23-yard field goal made it 17-0. Ryan Courtright's 50-yard field goal with 11 seconds left before halftime pulled UT Martin (6-4, 5-2) within 17-3.

Williams' 5-yard TD run at 6:59 in the third quarter put the Governors up 24-3. Williams had a 4-yard scoring run and Prince Momodu added a 17-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Bachus threw three touchdown passes -- covering 6, 27 and 16 yards -- to Jaylon Moore in the second half for the Skyhawks. JaVaughn Craig completed 17 of 27 passes for 255 yards with an interception for Austin Peay. DeAngelo Wilson had six catches for 126 yards.   JaVaughn Craig threw for 238 and three touchdowns, the third one for the go-ahead score in overtime, and Austin Peay defeated Eastern Kentucky 28-21 on Saturday. Austin Peay (6-3, 4-1 Ohio Valley) scored on the first play of overtime, as Craig connected with Kentel Williams on a 25-yard toss. Eastern Kentucky (5-4, 3-2) went four-and-out on its overtime possession. The Governors trailed 10-7 at halftime but took a 21-10 lead on a 1-yard run by Ahmaad Tanner in the third quarter and a 1-yard pass from Craig to Prince Momodu early in the fourth.

The Colonels drew within 21-18 after Daryl McCleskey's 9-yard run and a successful two-point conversion. Eastern Kentucky tied it at 21 on a 28-yard field goal by Sam Hayworth. After the tying field goal, the Governors drove to the EKU 32-yard line but Craig threw incomplete on third and fourth downs. EKU took over at its own 32 with 2:28 remaining.   Vito Priore threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns to lead Rhode Island to just its second win of the year, a 42-14 victory over Merrimack in a nonconference game on Saturday. The Rams beat Brown 31-28 a month ago for their first win of the season before dropping three straight games. Rhode Island (2-7, 0-5) will return to Northeast Conference play next Saturday at William & Mary (2-6, 0-4). Priore was 16-of-25 passing with one interception. Aaron Parker hauled in eight of those passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. The Rams forced five turnovers with Malik Gavek returning an interception 30 yards for a score to take a 21-7 lead early in the third quarter. Gavek also had a career-high 14 total tackles, well above his previous high of five in one game, and forced a fumble. Momodou Mbye and Rashod Dickerson also each picked off a Christian Carter pass.   Ahmaad Tanner punched into the end zone from 2 yards out for the game-winning score midway through the fourth quarter as Austin Peay knocked off Southeast Missouri State to give Austin Peay a 28-24 win over Southeast Missouri State in an Ohio Valley Conference clash on Saturday. The Governors, who knocked off Jacksonville State 52-33 two weeks ago, now have won back-to-back games for the first time under first-year head coach Mark Hudspeth.

Daniel Santacaterina fired a 13-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Alston with 9:52 left in the game to put the Redhawks in front, 24-21, but Austin Peay drove 72 yards in eight plays for the game-winning touchdown on its next possession.
