The pick-six was part of a 20-point second quarter that saw the team open up a 28-6 halftime advantage.   Jaylen Swain returned an interception 39 yards for a touchdown and Malik Feaster returned a fumble 100 yards for a score to help Jacksonville State hold off North Alabama 27-24 in nonconference action on Saturday. The Gamecocks (2-1) pulled within 10-6 on Alen Karajic's 39-yard field goal with 1:50 left in the first half. On the ensuing possession North Alabama quarterback Parker Driggers fumbled on the goal line after a 15-yard run with 58 seconds left in the half and Feaster scooped and scored to put JSU up 13-10.

The Gamecocks' defense delivered again in the third quarter on Swain's pick-6 to push their lead to 20-10. The Lions (0-3) answered using a six-play, 65-yard drive, culminating with Brady Pope's 4-yard TD run to pull within 20-17 with 3:16 left in the third quarter. JSU regained a 10-point lead on freshman quarterback Matthew Caldwell's 8-yard TD run with 10:31 left in the game. The Lions again pulled within three points on Blake Dever's 47-yard scoring strike to Cortez Hall with 2:17 left, but they failed to get the ball back. Caldwell completed 10 of 19 passes for 98 yards with an interception for the Gamecocks. He also ran for 27 yards on five carries. Josh Samuel rushed 20 times for 107 of JSU's 211 yards on the ground. Dever was 15-of-26 passing for 283 yards with one interception for North Alabama.   Draylen Ellis threw for 325 yards and four scores to four different receivers and Austin Peay beat Chattanooga 30-20 Thursday night in the season opener for both teams. Chattanooga entered as the preseason 18th-ranked team in the FCS and Austin Peay No. 20. Ellis found a diving Drae McCray in the back-right corner of the end zone as he rolled to his right on first-and-goal from the Mocs' 8-yard line for the go-ahead score with 40 seconds left in the third quarter.

The score made it a 23-20 contest and the Governors led the rest of the way. Ellis later connected with Ahmaad Tanner on a 4-yard touchdown to seal it at 30-20 with 8:14 left to play. Baniko Harley caught six passes for 137 yards and a score for Austin Peay and Tanner had 19 carries for 103 yards.   MARCH 2 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jack McDonald, LB, 6-0, 206, Jr., Brentwood, Tenn., Austin Peay,...McDonald led the Govs with 11 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and had a victory-clinching pass breakup in Sunday's 27-20 win against Tennessee State. He led a Govs defense that posted 13 TFLs (and now has 29 in two OVC games) and limited the Tigers to 98 rushing yards on 45 carries (2.2 ypc). With Tennessee State driving for a potential game-tying touchdown late in the fourth quarter, McDonald knocked down a pass inside the Govs 10-yard line to secure the win.   Austin Peay coach Mark Hudspeth has resigned after one season on the job that included him taking the Governors to a program-record 11 wins and a trip to the FCS quarterfinals. Athletic director Gerald Harrison announced Hudspeth's resignation Friday. The resignation is effective immediately. Harrison is keeping the rest of the coaching staff. Under Hudspeth, Austin Peay won its second Ohio Valley Conference championship and made its first postseason appearance. The Governors beat Furman and Sacramento State before losing to Montana State in the quarterfinals. He was named the OVC coach of the year. Hudspeth said in a statement released by Austin Peay that it was a personal decision and that he needs to spend time with his wife and children. He says he will return to coaching at the right time.   2019 AFCA FCS COACHES' FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN: DB Kordell Jackson, Jr., Austin Peay St.,...Under the tutelage of first-year nickels coach Keith Scott, Jackson has racked up seven interceptions to lead the Ohio Valley Conference, with his two fumble recoveries good for third. Jackson took two interceptions back for touchdowns against Mercer and returned a fumble for a score against Murray State. In addition to becoming the 33rd player in FCS history with multiple pick-sixes in a game, Jackson added a late strip-sack at Mercer as well.

His playoff debut against Furman saw Jackson make a season-high six tackles, including one for loss, with a fumble forced and recovered. Overall, the Birmingham, Alabama native has registered 43 tackles (35 solo), with seven tackles for loss and two sacks. He has forced and recovered two fumbles, adding three pass break-ups and three quarterback hurries to his ledger of disruption. Jackson's 159 interception return yards both led the OVC in 2019 and ranked second in program history behind only Howell Flatt's 1966 campaign. - Austin Peay Football

  Austin Peay has rewarded coach Mark Hudspeth with a contract extension through 2024 after his debut season resulted in the Governor's first playoff appearance. Athletic director Gerald Harrison announced the deal Monday, saying he knew a year ago Austin Peay had hired the right person for the job. Harrison said in a statement that Hudspeth and his staff have exceeded his expectations. Hudspeth led Austin Peay (11-4) to its first Ohio Valley Conference title since 1977. The Governors also beat Furman and Sacramento State to reach the final eight in the FCS playoffs before losing to Montana State. Hudspeth was named the OVC coach of the year. - AP College Football
