The redshirt junior quarterback impressed coaches during preseason camp, earning his second season-opening start. Early on against Georgia Tech, it appeared he was going to reward coaches for picking him. Blackman led the Seminoles on scoring drives of 51 and 62 yards as the team jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. But after the first 15 minutes, FSU's struggled to move the ball. Blackman started the game 7-of-9 passing for 76 yards, Blackman completed just 44% of his passes (16 of 36) for 122 yards and an interception. "Throughout the course of the game there were a handful of opportunities that James was seeing the right things but...something forced him to hesitate a few times and missed an opportunity," Norvell said of his quarterback. "He has to work through and get his eyes in the right place, but all in all, it was across the board. I don't the consistency showed up at any position. "We had quite a few mistakes that showed up in critical situations." - Orlando Sentinel

Jonathan Adams Jr. caught three touchdown passes, including the game-winner with 38 seconds remaining, and Arkansas State defeated Kansas State 35-31 on Saturday. Layne Hatcher threw a 17-yard pass to Adams for the winning score after the Wildcats (0-1) had taken a 31-28 lead on a Blake Lynch 35-yard field goal with 2:30 remaining. Arkansas State (1-1) faked a punt that led to a pass interference call, keeping a drive alive and leading to a 5-yard TD pass to Adams from Logan Bonner for a 28-21 lead with just under 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Kansas State responded with Harry Trotter's 5-yard touchdown run before Lynch's go-ahead field goal. Kansas State scored on its first possession on a 17-yard catch by Phillip Brooks following a blocked punt. The Wildcats scored on consecutive drives in the second quarter to take a 21-7 lead. Adams got the Red Wolves' first TD on a 2-yard pass from Bonner. Wide receiver Jeff Foreman threw a 48-yard scoring pass to Roshauud Paul midway through the second quarter and the Red Wolves trailed 21-14 at halftime. Arkansas State held the Wildcats to 91 yards rushing. - Arkansas State/AP College Football

Several players across the country have opted out due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic and elected to transfer. Ozougwu was listed as Larry Nixon III's backup at rush end heading into the season.   There will be more changes. As long as the coronavirus remains a threat, there will be constant pivoting and adjusting. But as South Carolina heads into the next phase of preseason football practice, the Gamecocks appear to be in a good place. "We've told our guys since the spring, the mature responsible teams are going to be the successful teams. I'm really proud of how our guys have handled it," South Carolina coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday. "We're encouraging them to lead a very boring life right now. Nothing wrong with that. Boring is good." Offensive linemen Mark Fox and Jordan Rhodes have opted to sit out the 2020 season, Muschamp said. They will remain on scholarship but aren't with the team right now. - The Post and Courier

Illinois recruited Khmari Thompson out of Central Gwinnett (Ga.) High School in the Class of 2018. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native fit one of the athletic molds Illini coach Lovie Smith covets. Speed. The two-sport standout ultimately committed to Missouri. Ran track and played wide receiver for Barry Odom. Thompson entered the transfer portal earlier this month, and the second time was the charm for Smith and Illinois with a Monday commitment from the speedy wideout. "New journey. New family. New number. New opportunities," Thompson tweeted late Monday morning when announcing his commitment. "I'm ready for it all can't wait to wear that orange and blue." Thompson played in just three games in 2018 as a true freshman preserving his redshirt season. He did not compile any statistics. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound wide receiver didn't appear in the 2019 season for the Tigers. - News Gazette Tribune

Arkansas State University's home opener Sept. 12 against Howard University was canceled Thursday after the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference announced its suspension of all fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic. Howard is a Football Championship Series football school. The Red Wolves are now down to 10 games for the 2020 season. The Big Ten announced July 9 it would play conference games only, cancelling ASU's match-up with Michigan and possibly the $1.8 million payout ASU was expecting.

According to Arkansas State's game contract with Howard, the Red Wolves were expected to pay Howard $350,000 for the contest. ASU may not be subject to paying that amount as the contract states that "no damages shall be owed should an unforeseen event occur outside the control of either party." The contract says that includes an "epidemic" or "order or ruling of any...athletic conference." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  07/17/20 - Marcel MurrayrSr/2024, Arkansas State, 5-10, 206 (DS#999 RB) + More +

2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Marcel Murray (Jr.), Arkansas State,...Murray found a place on the award's watch list for the second consecutive season and becomes the fifth all-time A-State running back to earn the recognition in at least two different years. Also finding a place on the prestigious watch list during multiple seasons were A-State standouts Warren Wand (2016-18), Michael Gordon (2014-15), Reggie Arnold (2007-09) and Jonathan Adams (2000-01). David Oku was also a preseason candidate in 2013. The Red Wolves have now had a player tabbed to the Doak Walker Award Watch List eight consecutive seasons dating back to 2013.

Murray, already named Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference by multiple publications such as Athlon Sports (3rd Team) and Phil Steele's (4th Team), completed his sophomore season in 2019 with 170 rushing attempts for 820 yards (4.8 avg.) and six touchdowns. He earned Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt honors after leading the team in rushing and ranking ninth in the league in yards per game (74.5 avg.). The Hiram, Ga., native was also named Third Team All-Sun Belt in 2018, the same season he was recognized as the conference's Freshman of the Year. His true-freshman season saw him run for 860 yards and eight touchdowns. - Arkansas State Football

  04/22/20 - Omar BaylessrSr/2020, Arkansas State, 6-1, 212 (DS#33 WR) + More +

There is NFL hope for a few former Arkansas State University players this year, but whether they are drafted is the question. Wide receivers Omar Bayless and Kirk Merritt are the Red Wolves' top prospects. Each played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in January at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., and each caught a touchdown pass. Bayless went on to work out in the NFL Draft Combine in Indianapolis in February, the lone ASU player who was invited. Bayless -- who measured 6-1, 212 pounds, at the combine -- exploded onto the scene in 2019, tallying 1,653 receiving yards, which ranked second nationally; 17 receiving touchdowns, which was third nationally; and 93 receptions. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year. Questions remain about his speed -- he clocked a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash at the combine -- and route-running ability. - Northwest Arkansas Times
