Adonicas Sanders caught a 36-yard touchdown throw from Jeff Sims with 51 seconds left to help Georgia Tech rally past Duke 31-27 on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) got the ball with 1:42 left and no timeouts at their own 12-yard line. But Sims targeted Sanders for the two big plays on the go-ahead drive, first when he beat Jeremiah Lewis deep down the right side for a 37-yard gain. Then came Sanders catch at the goalline, securing the deep ball despite Lewis committing a pass-interference penalty in a desperate attempt to break up the pass. Those were Sanders’ only catches of the game.

Duke (3-3, 0-2) had one more drive to respond and crossed midfield, but Juanyeh Thomas intercepted an overthrown ball from Gunnar Holmberg over the middle with 15 seconds left to seal this one. Sims threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions for Georgia Tech, which scored the game’s first 14 points but found itself in a tight finish to the final seconds. One of those three scoring throws was a 77-yard pass to Jahmyr Gibbs - who was left completely uncovered coming out of the backfield for an easy catch-and-run on the left side on the Yellow Jackets’ first possession. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Jack Jones stepped in front of the receiver, caught the ball and held it out with one hand. Just before he hit the ground, the Arizona State defensive back caught a glimpse of Deandre Pierce and tossed it to his teammate for a spectacular touchdown. The Sun Devils' run game was just as impressive. Pierce scored a 27-yard touchdown on a lateral off Jones' interception and No. 22 Arizona State rode its explosive run game to a 28-10 win over Stanford on Friday night. The Sun Devils (5-1, 3-0 Pac-12) exploited one of the nation's worst run defenses, racking up 255 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

Jayden Daniels provided the balance, throwing for 175 yards and running for 76 more, including a 51-yard touchdown. Their defense gave up some big plays in the passing game, but kept the Cardinal out of the end zone in the second half and created three turnovers - none more exciting than the interception and lateral. "When I got it, I knew it was me and the receiver on an island," Jones said. "I turned around a 'Dre was there. Luckily he caught the ball." Stanford (3-3, 2-2) had no answer for Arizona State's run game and became one dimensional offensively after falling behind, limited to 9 yards rushing on 20 carries. Tanner McKee threw for 356 yards and a touchdown, but had his first three interceptions of the season, including Pierce's back-breaking TD in the third quarter. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Jeff Sims came off the bench to run for three touchdowns and pass for another, Georgia Tech's defense stifled Sam Howell much of the game and the Yellow Jackets beat a ranked team for the first time in Geoff Collins' three seasons as coach, upsetting No. 21 North Carolina 45-22 Saturday night. Playing for the first time since he was injured in a season-opening loss to Northern Illinois, Sims replaced Jordan Yates late in the second quarter and ran for TDs of 11 and 1 yards that put Georgia Tech in control - the latter set up by his 38-yard scamper.

Sims threw a 27-yard scoring pass to Malachi Carter early in the fourth quarter and finished off the game with a flourish, scoring on a 50-yard run with just over a minute remaining. Sims ran for 128 yards on 10 carries and completed 10 of 13 passes for 112 yards for Georgia Tech (2-2, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). North Carolina (2-2, 1-2) is shaping up as one of the nation's most disappointing teams after coming into the season ranked in the top 10. Sam Howell was sacked eight times and fumbled twice, leading to 10 points for the the Yellow Jackets in the first half. He also was stuffed on a fourth-down run in his own territory, setting up a short field for another Georgia Tech touchdown drive. - Georgia Tech/AP College Football

Rachaad White said there were times that Colorado's defense was loading the line of scrimmage on Saturday night, daring Arizona State to beat them with throws downfield. Jayden Daniels and the Sun Devils were happy to oblige. Daniels threw for 236 yards and ran for two touchdowns, White added rushing and receiving touchdowns, and Arizona State beat Colorado 35-13 in the Pac-12 opener for both teams. "It was great the passing game got going," White said. "Everyone got in rhythm. If they want to stack the box, then we trust the receivers. We did some key things this week to fix things up and Jayden led that group." Arizona State (3-1, 1-0 Pac-12) bounced back from last week's loss to BYU that caused the program to drop out of the AP Top 25. The Sun Devils never trailed, controlling the flow of the game with steady offense and solid defense.

They sealed the game early in the fourth quarter when Daniels threw a lateral across the field to Ricky Pearsall, who then fired a return forward pass across the field to White, who ran 30 yards for the touchdown and a 28-10 lead. Daniels capped Arizona State's scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run. He completed 18 of 25 passes (72%) and also ran for a team-high 75 yards. It was a cleaner game for the Sun Devils, who were called for 16 penalties in the BYU loss. Arizona State outgained Colorado 436 yards to 250. "Hopefully, we learned a lesson," Sun Devils coach Herm Edwards said. "We got better this week." Colorado (1-3, 0-1) made it close for a few minutes, cutting the deficit to 14-10 early in the third quarter by scoring its first touchdown in more than nine quarters. Alex Fontenot powered through for a 1-yard score on third down. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Arizona State's first half was a stinker and the second half was stellar. In the aftermath of a surprisingly competitive 37-10 victory over UNLV on Saturday night, the 23rd-ranked Sun Devils chose to focus on the latter. "Eventually, our guys came together," Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. "In the third quarter, that's when we got going." Quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for a career-high 122 yards and Rachaad White added two rushing touchdowns. Arizona State's defense held UNLV to just 19 total yards in the second half and the Sun Devils were dominant with a 23-0 advantage after the break. White had 90 yards on the ground and scored a crucial 9-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to give Arizona State a 21-10 lead. He added a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.

Daniels was 20 of 29 passing for 175 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The second touchdown was a 33-yarder to LV Bunkley-Shelton that put the Sun Devils (2-0) up 34-10 and capped a stretch of three touchdowns in less than seven minutes, turning a tight game into a comfortable margin. "I think we did a good job in the end," Arizona State cornerback Chase Lucas said. "But we've just got to start fresher, start better." UNLV hadn't won a football game since 2019 and came into the game a 33.5-point underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, but didn't look overmatched for a big chunk of the night. Arizona State had to work for its 14-10 halftime lead. - Arizona State/AP College Football

A stunning season-opening loss to Northern Illinois has third-year Georgia Tech coach Geoff Collins forced to defend the state of his rebuilding process. The health of quarterback Jeff Sims could be a key to Collins' hopes of showing progress in 2021. Collins is 6-16 in his third season in Atlanta. The Yellow Jackets, who play FCS state rival Kennesaw State on Saturday, have lost six of seven since a 2-2 start to the 2020 season. The latest loss was especially damaging to hopes the 2021 season could provide signs Collins can build a winning team.

Among low points in Collins' three seasons, perhaps only a loss to The Citadel in his 2019 debut season compares with last Saturday's 22-21 loss to Northern Illinois. Georgia Tech was favored by 18 1/2 points. The visit from Kennesaw State was expected to generate momentum for Georgia Tech's Atlantic Coast Conference opener at No. 6 Clemson on Sept. 18. Now, with new questions at quarterback, no one dares to look past Kennesaw State, which will be playing its first game against a Power 5 opponent. Sims' status against Kennesaw State is uncertain after he left the loss to Northern Illinois with an apparent left arm injury. Sims, a right-handed thrower, had his hand on his left elbow as he left the field. He had his left arm in a sling as he stood on the sideline for the second half. - AP College Football

Extremely productive effort from his nose tackle spot, collecting six tackles, two tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery...A key reason why Arizona State held Southern Utah under 80 yards rushing and only 3.0 yards/rush. Drew the attention of the opposing blocking scheme, but still manage to put up numbers and draw a holding penalty...Tied for the second-most tackles for loss in the conference (2.0) and also tied for the second-most tackles among defensive lineman (6.0) in week one. One of only seven players in the conference to recover a fumble...4th Arizona State player to win this award since it began in 2019 and the first since Tyler Johnson won in December 2020.
