  08/10/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Considering the other suitors for wide receiver Jacob Cowing, Arizona's ability to land the wide receiver might just have been the highlight of an already incredible offseason. The Maricopa native garnered offers from LSU, Florida, South Carolina, Oregon, Mississippi State, Texas Tech, Louisville and Arizona State, among others, after deciding to leave UTEP following three seasons. He could've gone to "The Swamp," "Death Valley" or Autzen Stadium. He could've played in the "Air Raid" offense, heaven for a wide receiver. Instead, Cowing chose an Arizona program that's only won one game in the last two-plus years.

Proximity to home was key - though it wasn't the only factor. "I have a baby in the Chandler-Gilbert area, so I wanted to be closer to him and spend that time during my last few years of college football, and also my friends and family in the Chandler-Gilbert area as well," said Cowing, who will lead the Wildcats into their Sept. 3 season opener at San Diego State. "I wanted them to be a part of the last few years...U of A was also one of my dream schools growing up, so why not go out with a bang for these last few years of college football." - Arizona Star News

  08/09/22 - Jordan MorganrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-5, 311 (DS#2 OG) + More +

Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan answers questions during Tuesday's media day at the Davis Sports Center on campus. The Marana High School product is expected to anchor the Wildcats' offensive line this fall. Brennan Carroll, Arizona's offensive coordinator and O-line coach, put it bluntly: "We need him to be great." Carroll was talking about Jordan Morgan, a big, talented local product who has everything you could want in a tackle on this level or the next one. Expectations for Morgan this season are as massive as the player himself; he's listed at 6 feet 5 inches and 320 pounds.

Now all Morgan has to do is live up to them. Morgan has positioned himself to do just that. He's had an exceptional offseason in the weight room and strength-and-conditioning program. His body and mind are in a good place. That wasn't always the case last season. Morgan suffered a high-ankle sprain during training camp last year. He said in spring that it bothered him throughout and even after the season. "I came back a little hesitant," Morgan said this week. "My pass set was kind of messed up. I was opening up. I wasn't trying to apply a lot of pressure on it." - Arizona Star News

2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Luke Wysong, New Mexico,...Wysong led the Lobos and all Mountain West freshmen in 2021 in receiving yards, catches, kickoff returns and punt returns, and could very well lead the way in 2022 as well. Wysong added around 15 pounds of muscle in the off-season and is still one of the fastest players in the league, starring in the 60-yard dash at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. - New Mexico Football

  08/01/22 - Christian YoungrSr/2023, Arizona, 6-1, 221 (DS#47 OLB) + More +

In its annual season-preview magazine, Athlon Sports ranked the Wildcats' defensive backfield as the third worst in the Pac-12. The members of the UA secondary don't see themselves that way. Nor should they. Start with the fact that Arizona ranked second in the conference in passing yards allowed last season. Then recall spring practice, when the secondary produced a bevy of interceptions under new defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen.

Fisch sees NFL-caliber talent throughout that unit, which includes Young, fellow safety Jaxen Turner and cornerbacks Christian Roland-Wallace and Treydan Stukes. Young and Roland-Wallace made the initial watch list for the 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl. Young casually referred to the UA defensive backfield as "the best secondary in the Pac-12" during spring ball. That's probably a stretch. Opponents had a 25-4 touchdown-to-interception ratio against Arizona last year. But the Wildcats might be closer to first in the league than 10th. - Arizona Star News

  08/01/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Although he was one of the most sought-after players in the NCAA transfer portal, Jacob Cowing arrived in Tucson with relatively little fanfare. UA fans were swept up in the recruitment of top-50 prospect Tetairoa McMillan. The acquisition of quarterback Jayden de Laura also demanded big, bold headlines. But make no mistake: Cowing is at worst Arizona's second-most important offseason pickup, behind de Laura, and he'll make an instant impact for an offense desperate for playmakers. One of Arizona's two player representatives at Media Day, along with senior safety Christian Young, Cowing comes to L.A. as a preseason second-team All-Pac-12 selection.

He exploded at UTEP last year, catching 69 passes for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns. He chose Arizona for two primary reasons: the relationship he quickly built with Fisch and Tucson's proximity to the Chandler area, where Cowing's 2-year-old son, Chase, lives. Cowing attended Maricopa High School. He was a two-star recruit. Now he's on the verge of stardom. - Arizona Star News

  07/29/22 - Taylor UpshawrSr/2024, Arizona, 6-4, 246 (DS#25 DE) + More +

The departures of Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo have left a hole in Michigan's defense. A huge one. The two defensive ends combined for 25 sacks, 28 1/2 tackles for loss and became a major problem for opposing quarterbacks. Hutchinson wound up being a Heisman Trophy finalist, while Ojabo emerged as an All-American and first-team all-Big Ten selection. Together, the two comprised the best edge-rushing duo in the country. But with both now gone, how will the Michigan defense go about replacing them? In spring, first-year coordinator Jesse Minter acknowledged the tough task ahead. He said it wouldn't be one or two players who make up the lost contribution. It's going to take multiple.

But who will they be? Taylor Upshaw and Mike Morris figure to be the front runners, along with Kris Jenkins, outside linebacker Jaylen Harrell and Braiden McGregor as a pass-rush specialist. Expect multiple players to see extensive playing time this fall, a departure from Hutchinson seeing the field on nearly every play of every game. Some players will specialize on first and second down (Morris, Upshaw), while others (Harrell, McGregor) could be brought in for third-and-long situations. It might be the biggest question mark facing Michigan this offseason, and one we really won't have an answer for until Week 1. - Ann Arbor News

New wide receiver Jacob Cowing and returning safety Christian Young will represent Arizona at Friday's Pac-12 Media Day in Los Angeles, the league announced Monday. Cowing, Young and coach Jedd Fisch will talk to the media at 10:45 a.m.; the news conference will be available to watch on Pac-12.com as well as on the Pac-12 Insider and the Pac-12 Now app. A 6-foot-3-inch junior from Houston, Young has 107 career tackles and two forced fumbles. Cowing, a transfer from UTEP, boasts a résumé unlike any receiver on the Wildcats' roster. He led all Conference USA freshmen in receiving yards as a freshman. His 2021 season was his best: He caught 69 passes for 1,354 yards and seven touchdowns for Miners coach Dana Dimel, a former UA assistant. Cowing has been named an early-season candidate for both the Maxwell Award, given annually to the best player in college football; and the Biletnikoff Award, given to the best receiver. - Arizona Star News

  07/06/22 - *Scooby Wright IIIJr/2016, Arizona, 6-0, 239 (DS#5 ILB) + More +

Scooby Wright of the Birmingham Stallions said it best when he told me that his season of football in the new USFL felt like summer camp. "Just hanging with all my homies all day," he said. And for months and months. Or, as we say in Birmingham, munts and munts. USFL Season One was a wild and wacky experiment in sports entertainment. The league, all the teams and the TV rights are owned by Fox Sports, and so to save money the entire regular season was played in Birmingham. Players, coaches and support personnel lived in hotels or rental properties around town. All the games were played at Protective Stadium. Players ate lunch together, and then one of the guys was kicked off a team because he didn't want chicken salad for lunch. Who doesn't like chicken salad? It was all a little insane. And then the craziest part of it all is that it actually worked.

The final product? Pretty good. The championship game? There were multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter, dramatic story lines and game-winning heroes. It doesn't get much better than that. The Birmingham Stallions defeated the Philadelphia Stars 33-30 on national television on the Sunday night before Independence Day. Sounds like a new holiday tradition to me. "The Birmingham Stallions win the inaugural USFL championship, baby," Wright said during his post-game interview on the field. Giddy up. They used to call Birmingham the Football Capital of the South. I'd say that reputation still fits. By multiple degrees, the USFL was a huge win for Birmingham. It's worth celebrating. Best of all, the league is returning next year. It's not clear how many teams will be in Birmingham in 2023, but USFL Season Two is reportedly scheduled to begin in mid-April. - Birmingham News

A former Arizona Wildcat helped deliver a championship in the inaugural season of the revived USFL. With the Birmingham Stallions leading the Philadelphia Stars 26-23 with 3:03 left to play in the USFL championship game in Canton, Ohio on Sunday, former UA star linebacker and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year Scooby Wright intercepted quarterback K.J. Costello's - who was substituting for the injured former Northern Arizona Lumberjack Case Cookus - pass and returned it for a touchdown, to extend Birmingham's lead and win the title.

Wright, who returned to the gridiron this season after becoming a mixed-martial artist and firefighter, joined the Stallions after stints in the XFL and AAF. "After playing in two failed spring leagues and finally having to play one all the way through, this means a lot," Wright said on the Fox broadcast after the game. "There's been a lot of uncertainty with football and stuff, and I'm just glad this day is here, allowing me to play for the people I love my teammates." Birmingham finished the season 11-1, with its lone loss against former Arizona head coach Kevin Sumlin and the Houston Gamblers. - Arizona Star News

  06/17/22 - DJ WilliamsrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-10, 225 (DS#57 RB) + More +

The Arizona Wildcats have added another member to an already-crowded running back room, picking up a commitment from Florida State graduate transfer D.J. Williams. Williams announced his commitment via his Twitter page Tuesday afternoon. This will be the third stop for the 5-foot-10, 205-pound back out of Lake Placid, Florida. Williams was originally a four-star recruit and the No. 16 running back in the 2019 class.

He committed to Auburn and spent two seasons with the Tigers, rushing for 599 yards on 122 carries and scoring five touchdowns in 19 games. He also had 72 receiving yards on 12 catches. Williams ran for a career-high 130 yards against No. 2 LSU during the 2019 season. Williams transferred to FSU for the 2021 season, but was used sparingly. He appeared in six games, carrying the ball 10 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. - Arizona Star News
