  10/02/22 - Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

Jayden de Laura threw for 484 yards and tied a school record with six touchdowns, Jacob Cowing caught 12 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown and Arizona used that big night through the air to beat Colorado 43-20 on Saturday. There were several offensive stars for Arizona, but it was a particularly good night for Dorian Singer, who made a pair of highlight-reel catches. The second - a fingertip catch in the back of the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown - gave the Wildcats a 19-7 lead. Singer finished with nine catches for 163 yards.

Arizona (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) is halfway to the six wins needed for bowl eligibility, one year after a dismal 1-11 campaign. The Wildcats rolled up 673 yards of total offense. It was another lopsided loss for the Buffs (0-5, 0-2), who lost their first four games by at least 25 points and weren't much better against the Wildcats. Colorado freshman Owen McCown completed 14 of 30 passes for 186 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 43 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats took a 26-13 lead into halftime. The game could have been even more lopsided but Arizona couldn't convert on a few good opportunities. Among them: Singer's acrobatic one-handed grab for a 47-yard gain early in the second quarter put Arizona on Colorado's 3-yard line, but the Buffs stuffed the next four plays to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone. De Laura threw for 273 yards and four touchdowns before halftime. - Arizona/AP College Football

The offense then marched down the field, going 83 yards on 10 plays and scoring a touchdown on a seven-yard rush by QB Jayden de Laura to give Arizona a 14-7 lead with 5:45 left in the first half...Only the second Arizona player to achieve this honor since the award began prior to the 2019 season. Kyon Barrs won it in Week 10 of last season. First time a Pac-12 football player of the week award has been shared since 2008 when USC's C.J.   09/18/22 - Jayden de LaurarSr/2024, Arizona, 5-11, 207 (DS#40 QB) + More +

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Arizona's players sprinted down the field celebrating, knowing that a win over giant-slayer North Dakota State was no small feat. Six straight Football Bowl Subdivision teams had fallen to the Bison. A newly-revived Arizona program wasn't going to be the seventh. Jayden de Laura threw for 229 yards and a touchdown, ran for another score, and Arizona rallied to beat NDSU 31-28 on Saturday night. In the process, receiver Dorian Singer said he learned something about his Wildcats as Pac-12 play approaches. "When stuff hits the fan, if we have each other's back, we can beat anybody," said Singer, who finished with a team-high 88 yards receiving. The Wildcats snapped North Dakota State's FBS win streak at six games, dating to 2010.

The Bison have won nine out of the past 11 national championships at the FCS level and boast several NFL alumni - including quarterbacks Carson Wentz, Trey Lance and Easton Stick. Arizona was trailing 28-24 midway through the fourth quarter but got a crucial stop on fourth-and-2 at its own 23 to flip momentum. The Wildcats then drove the field and took a 31-28 lead on de Laura's perfectly placed 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Cowing in the corner of the end zone. Arizona's defense did the rest, holding NDSU's previously prolific running game in check. De Laura finished 20-of-29 passing. The Wildcats now have a 2-1 record one season after finishing with a 1-11 mark. "Our players did a fantastic job tonight," Arizona coach Jedd Fisch said. "It was a very clean football game. We were 4-for-4 in the red zone, no turnovers, one penalty." North Dakota State's Hunter Luepke scored three touchdowns - two on the ground and one through the air. He ran for 115 yards, leading the Bison's 283-yard rushing attack. - Arizona/AP College Football

  09/15/22 - Tiaoalii SavearSr/2026, Arizona, 6-4, 295 (DS#999 DT) + More +

Arizona defensive tackle Tiaoalii Savea, injured late in the first quarter vs. MSU, will be a game-time decision against North Dakota State. Savea suffered an injury to his right lower leg after a cut block by Bulldogs left tackle Kwatrivous Johnson. The play was going to the offense's right. Johnson and Savea were nowhere near the ball. But cut-blocking is legal under those circumstances. "As long as you get cut within the tackle box, you can do that," coach Jedd Fisch said. "I've certainly coached that for a lot of years. So I'm not going to comment on that." - Arizona Star

  09/03/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Jayden de Laura threw four touchdown passes, three to fellow transfer Jacob Cowing, and Arizona beat San Diego State 38-20 on a sizzling Saturday to spoil the debut of Snapdragon Stadium. The Aztecs (0-1) waited two years for their new stadium to be built next to where 70,000-seat SDCCU Stadium once stood, and then were embarrassed by the Wildcats (1-0) on a 100-degree day. SDSU announced a sellout of 34,046. Many seats were empty at kickoff and the east stands, totally exposed to the sun, were mostly empty by the fourth quarter.

Arizona avenged a 38-14 loss to SDSU in its home opener last year during a 1-11 season. De Laura, who transferred from Washington State, completed 22 of 35 passes for 299 yards. He was intercepted once. Cowing, a transfer from UTEP, had eight catches for 152 yards. The Wildcats sacked transfer Braxton Burmeister on the first play from scrimmage, forced SDSU to punt and then scored the stadium's first points on Tyler Loop's 25-yard field goal. De Laura, the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive Player of the Year at Washington State last season, hit Cowing for on a 17-yard pass for a 10-0 lead and then found freshman Tetairoa McMillan on a 4-yarder to make it 17-3 midway through the second quarter. - Arizona/AP College Football

  08/21/22 - Tyler LooprSr/2025, Arizona, 5-11, 191 (DS#5 K) + More +

Tyler Loop didn't miss a kick last season. He went 12 for 12 on extra points and 12 for 12 on field goals. Loop didn't make every kick during spring practice, and he didn't handle it well. So dealing with failure became a primary focus during the offseason for the third-year Arizona Wildcat. "I was a little bit of a headcase in the spring," Loop said Thursday. "I'd miss a kick, and I'd trip out a little bit. That was something that he (special-teams coach Jordan Paopao) kept telling me: 'Hey, we gotta work on this. I know you haven't missed in a game, but this is still an area you gotta keep up.' "So this summer I spent a lot of time with our sports psychology team, working on seeing a kick objectively. Like, 'Hey, I made it or I missed it, but I got a next kick. I gotta go.' "One thing we talk about big time right now is, 'Play the next play.' Keeping that on the forefront of my mind has really helped." Expectations are high for Loop as he heads into his third season.

The kicking job is all his after he shared it with Lucas Havrisik last year. Loop made the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, among other preseason accolades. Loop knows that he's bound to miss a kick in a game at some point. How he approaches the next one will be the true test. "I was always super emotionally invested, played with a ton of passion growing up, and still do," Loop said. "Now it's all about, 'How do you keep that passion without letting it affect the next thing?' So that's what I've had to get a lot better at. We've seen big improvements there." - Arizona Star News

  08/14/22 - Jacob CowingrSr/2024, Arizona, 5-08, 168 (DS#23 WR) + More +

Asked whether he expected to touch the ball a certain number of times per game in his first season as an Arizona Wildcat, Jacob Cowing said exactly what you'd expect him to say: "Not at all. I'm a team-first guy. As long as us as a team are getting the job done and we get the win (that's) what matters to me. I don't really care about personal stats. I just want to get the win and turn this program around." Cowing's sincerity about winning games and turning UA football around can't be questioned. The other part, though? "He's lying to you," receivers coach Kevin Cummings said, laughing. "He wants the ball every play. He's a competitor that way." Cowing didn't come to Arizona to be a decoy, although he could be an effective one at times. He came, at least in part, because he knows Jedd Fisch can help elevate his game and boost his NFL draft stock. Just ask Stanley Berryhill III, Cowing's predecessor as a slot receiver and all-around weapon in Fisch's offense. Berryhill caught 83 passes for 744 yards last year, becoming just the sixth player in school history to have 80-plus receptions in a season.

Berryhill also had 19 rushes and 18 punt returns. All told, that's 120 touches, or 10 per game. Cowing is expected to be Arizona's primary punt returner. He's also in the mix to return kickoffs. Fisch wants to get him the ball as much as possible in as many ways as possible. The transfer from UTEP will line up in the slot, on the outside, maybe even in the backfield at times. He'll go deep, catch bubble screens and run fly sweeps. "There are not many limitations to his game," Cummings said. "He can go vertical. He can win man on man. And he's got the smarts and the savviness to adjust to some of that stuff in the slot, some of those zone coverages, slip defenders. "It's on us as a staff to put him in as many different spots as we can to use those skill sets. For him, he's just going out there playing, and wherever we line him up, he's done a great job of figuring out where he needs to be and how to run it." - Arizona Star News
