  2019 PRESEASON SUN BELT FIRST TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): LB - Akeem Davis-Gaither (Appalachian State, Senior),...Davis-Gaither, Fehr, Franklin and Josh Thomas were key members of a 2018 defense that ranked No. 4 nationally at 15.5 points allowed per game and set a Sun Belt record by allowing only 20 touchdowns. Davis-Gaither amassed 105 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and three quarterback hurries, while Fehr recorded a team-high 5.5 sacks and 86 tackles.   2019 PRESEASON SUN BELT SECOND TEAM (COACHES/MEDIA): RS - Darrynton Evans (Appalachian State, Junior),...The Mountaineers, who have been picked by the league's coaches to win another Sun Belt title during head coach Eliah Drinkwitz's first season in Boone, possess three second-team selections in defensive back Josh Thomas, tight end Collin Reed and Evans as a return specialist.

In addition to his production at running back, Evans averaged 32.7 yards per kickoff return, a mark that ranked No. 2 nationally among players with at least 1.2 returns per game.   The Appalachian State Mountaineers and Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns are the favorites to win the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Football East and West Divisions, respectively, as voted on by the league’s 10 head coaches. The Sun Belt released the preseason poll Thursday in advance of the Sun Belt’s annual media day that begins Sunday, July 21. For the second consecutive season, the Sun Belt will continue with a Divisional format to determine a champion. The Championship Game will be played at the site of the divisional team with the best overall conference winning percentage on December 7, 2019.

Additionally, Appalachian State was picked as the overall favorite to win the Championship title in a vote that included selected members of the media, along with the 10 football head coaches. The Mountaineers head into the 2019 season looking to repeat as East Division and overall Sun Belt Champions. App State claimed the inaugural Sun Belt Championship with a 30-19 win over Louisiana. App brings back 20 starters (10 offense; seven defense; three special teams), including 2018 Offensive Player of the Year, Zac Thomas. Thomas accounted for 32 total touchdowns in 2018 (21 pass, 10 rush, 1 receiving) as the Mountaineers led the league in scoring at 37.3 points per game. - Sun Belt Football

  2019 PRESEASON DAVEY O'BRIEN NATIONAL QUARTERBACK AWARD WATCH LIST: Zac Thomas, Appalachian State, Jr., 6-1, 210, Trussville, Ala.,...Thomas is one of nine juniors and eight Group of Five conference quarterbacks on the list. Earlier this week, he was named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, which is given to America's College Player of the Year. Thomas' QBR of 79.8 in 2018 ranks ninth nationally among returning FBS quarterbacks.
