Darrynton Evans scored three touchdowns and 20th-ranked Appalachian State repeated as Sun Belt Conference champions with a 45-38 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. Evans won the game's MVP for the second straight season. Zac Thomas threw for 149 yards and two touchdowns and Daetrich Harrington and Marcus Williams added touchdown runs. The Mountaineers racked up 416 yards on offense, including 267 on the ground in a dominating first half. When asked on the field what bowl he expects his team to play in, first-year Mountaineers coach Eli Drinkwitz shouted to fans, "It better be the Cotton Bowl!" The Mountaineers have now won at least a share of four straight Sun Belt championships. This was the second year there was a championship game.

Drinkwitz pulled a poker chip out of his pocket after the game and thanked his players, saying "we asked then to keep the chip all year long and be motivated to do something that has never been done before. And this group did it. Impressive." The Mountaineers (12-1, 8-1 Sun Belt) accomplished something North Carolina, Duke, North Carolina State and Wake Forest never have -- becoming the first FBS team from North Carolina to win 12 games in a season. Appalachian State defeated Lafayette 17-7 early this season on the road, but this one wasn't nearly as competitive. The Mountaineers entered the game averaging 38.9 points per game and showed their firepower in the first half by scoring touchdowns on their first five possessions -- the first three by Evans -- to build a 35-14 lead. - Appalachian State/AP College Football

Appalachian State's historic football season continued as the Mountaineers moved up to 21st in the Dec. 3 release of the College Football Playoff Top 25 Rankings. The Mountaineers are in the CFP rankings for the fourth-straight week, ranking 25th on Nov. 12 and Nov. 26 and 24th on Nov. 19, and earned the school's and conference's highest-ever CFP ranking. Appalachian State, also ranked 20th in both Associated Press Top 25 and 22nd in Amway Coaches powered by USA Today Sports Top 25 polls this week, stands as the first team in Sun Belt history to be ranked in the three major NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision Rankings.

The national poll rankings of 20th tie the conference's all-time high set by the Mountaineers earlier this season in the Oct. 27 polls. The Mountaineers are the first team in Sun Belt history to achieve two wins against Autonomy Five conference schools in the same season. The Mountaineers' wins over North Carolina and South Carolina with Georgia State's victory at Tennessee and Coastal Carolina's victory at Kansas give the Sun Belt a conference-record four wins against Autonomy Five schools in the same season. - Sun Belt Football

Thomas set or tied career highs with 326 passing yards, 28 completions (28 of 34), four touchdown passes and five total TDs (one rushing). Rarely misfiring all night, Thomas and the Mountaineers scored on passes of 44, 8, 6 and 25 yards to go with his 5-yard TD run. No other Sun Belt player accounted for five touchdowns this weekend.   Zac Thomas passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for a fifth score to lead No. 22 Appalachian State to a 48-13 romp over Troy on Friday night in the regular-season finale. The win assured the Mountaineers (11-1, 7-1 Sun Belt Conference) of hosting the league title game against Louisiana next Saturday. Thomas, Darrynton Evans, Thomas Hennigan and others all delivered big plays for Appalachian State, which reached the end zone on each of its first five possessions against the Trojans (5-7, 3-5). Thomas was 28-of-34 passing with his final attempt a 25-yard scoring strike to Evans to start the fourth quarter. He had a 12-yard touchdown run.

Evans also scored on runs of 52 and 9 yards and gained 82 yards. Hennigan gained 140 yards on 11 catches and Malik Williams caught two short touchdown passes. Appalachian State led 34-13 at halftime. The Mountaineers had two apparent touchdown passes negated by penalties on the final drive before the half, which ended with an interception, but didn't punt until well into the third quarter. The Trojans needed to win to become bowl eligible but fell behind 20-3 in the first 10 minutes. Kaleb Barker passed for 281 yards with an interception, going 24 of 41. But the Trojans had just nine rushing yards entering the fourth and finished with 35. - AP College Football

Appalachian State receiver Corey Sutton announced on his Twitter page that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the 2019 season. Sutton was injured in the second quarter of the Mountaineers' 34-13 win over Texas State at Kidd Brewer Stadium on Nov. 23. Earlier in the game, he scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zac Thomas. "Dear App Nation. It hurts me to inform you that I will be out for the rest of the season due to an ACL tear." Sutton wrote on Twitter. "I truly appreciate all the love and support you guys continue to bring. This will not be a setback, but a way to show my work ethic, mentality and how I'm really built. My teammates know I am their biggest supporter as we still have a lot of business to handle." Sutton, in nine games, caught 41 passes for 601 yards and seven touchdowns. During his news conference after App State's win over Texas State, App State head coach Eliah Drinkwitz said Sutton is a big part of the Mountaineers' offense. - Watauga Democrat

Darrynton Evans was recruited to Appalachian State as a slot receiver. He's carved out a pretty solid niche at tailback. Evans ran for 154 yards and three second-half touchdowns and No. 23 Appalachian State avoided another home upset with a big second half to beat Texas State 35-13 on a rain-soaked Saturday. The victory, combined with Arkansas State's 38-33 win over Georgia Southern, guarantees the Mountaineers (10-1, 6-1 Sun Belt) a spot in the Sun Belt Conference championship game on Dec. 7 for the second straight season. Evans has eclipsed 1,150 yards rushing in each of the past two seasons and needs 14 yards to break into the top 10 in school history in rushing.

Coach Eli Drinkwitz is glad the previous coaching staff made that move. "He's an elite tailback, obviously," Drinkwitz said. "To me, he's one of the most dynamic players in college football because of his speed and return ability, and we're very fortunate to have him. I've been blessed to be around some really good running backs. Five of them have been drafted, and he's right there with all of them, for sure." Evans said he isn't surprised by his success because he played running back in high school. "At times I had other people who could play running back, so I would move to slot," said Evans, who was moved to tailback in 2016 after the Mountaineers sustained some injuries at that position. Quarterback Zac Thomas threw for 174 yards and two touchdowns to help the Mountaineers improve to 30-6 at home since becoming an FBS team in 2014. - Appalachian State/AP College Football
