  07/09/20 - Mark LeGreeSr/2011, Appalachian State, 5-11, 210 (DS#8 FS) + More +

Appalachian State has announced its 2021 athletics hall of fame class. The five-person group is headlined by former defensive back Mark LeGree, a three-time All-American and fifth-round pick by the Seattle Seahawks. A 2020 class will not be named or inducted, according to the school's release, due to the coronavirus pandemic. LeGree (who played from 2007 to 2010) is joined by track & field thrower Malcolm Styers (2007 to 2011), softball player Katie Boyd (2008 to 2011), tennis player Bob Allsbrook (1979 to 1983) and wrestler George Sansone (1966 to 1969). - Winston-Salem Journal

In an effort to trim its yearly budget of around $25 million by roughly 20% to combat COVID-19 losses, App State first cut three men's sports: indoor track and field, soccer and tennis. Another step came June 12, when Chancellor Sheri Everts announced the athletics department would go through mandatory furloughs. The Journal followed with a Freedom of Information Act request this week regarding potential furloughs. The chancellor's office said all full-time employees will be affected by this plan, a total of 106 people who will see their work schedules affected. The hope is that it will save the athletics department approximately $535,000, according to App State chief communications office Megan Hayes.

"By implementing furloughs, it is our goal to protect as many jobs as possible as we navigate the financial consequences of this pandemic," Everts said in her update. Work hours will be reduced for most athletics workers during this time frame. Hayes said that athletics employees would be furloughed one-to-four days per month pending on each individual's compensation level. A smaller group of employees will face continuous furloughs, but those will be limited to a shorter period of time. - Winston-Salem Journal

  06/10/20 - Shaun JollyrSr/2022, Appalachian State, 5-09, 179 (DS#55 CB) + More +

Appalachian State has a plan to bring student-athletes back to campus, and it will begin soon. Joey Jones, App State's senior associate AD for strategic communications, indicated Tuesday that a phased return to Boone would start next week in the hopes of reintegrating athletes safely back while the novel coronavirus pandemic is still ongoing. The athletics department will share more details on its return safety protocol with an official release in the next few days. The school will start by bringing in small groups of football players, starting on June 15. Once the football team is back, it will be followed by the men's and women's basketball teams and the rest of the fall sports. Students will be tested for COVID-19 when they arrive.

That timeline is contingent on how the NCAA proceeds. The DI Council announced May 20 that it would allow football and men's basketball players to start voluntary workouts June 1 and that it would decide on other sports later. App State will join fellow in-state FBS schools Charlotte, East Carolina, North Carolina and N.C. State as schools with announced plans. - Winston-Salem Journal

Appalachian State's Darrynton Evans became an NFL running back on Friday night. Evans, a Mountaineers star who turned pro following his junior season, was selected during the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Tennessee Titans. Evans was the 93rd overall player taken. He is the highest draft pick for App State since Brian Quick was selected in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2012 draft. Evans will pair in the Titans backfield with Derrick Henry, the Titans' 6-foot-3 bruiser who ran for 1,540 yards last season. The New Smyrna Beach native was described by draft analysts as a change-of-pace back due to the 4.41 40-yard dash speed he displayed at the NFL Combine. - Winston-Salem Journal

Appalachian State scooped up a transfer wide receiver on Thursday, picking up a commitment from Jacoby Pinckney. Pinckney, who's 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, comes to Boone from Virginia Tech. He will will sit out the 2021 football season due to NCAA transfer rules. He announced his decision on Twitter. Pinckney is the younger brother of Brandon Pinckney, who played at App State from 2013 to 2017. Jacoby Pinckney redshirted the 2019 season as a true freshman with the Hokies, meaning he will have three seasons of eligibility left after 2020.

He joins to App State at an ideal time. With senior wide receivers Corey Sutton, Thomas Hennigan, Jalen Virgil and Malik Williams set to play their last season in 2020, Pinckney will have the opportunity to contribute immediately once eligible. Pinckney is from Spartanburg, S.C., where he played at Dorman High School. During his sophomore (2016) and junior (2017) seasons there, he had at least 65 receptions, 968 yards and five touchdowns. His senior year in 2018, Pinckney grabbed 35 catches and registered 524 yards with four touchdowns. - Winston-Salem Journal

App State was able to send players away with most of their spring work done. The Mountaineers got through 11 of their 15 allowed spring practices, where pecking orders began to shake out. And while the offense came into it essentially set, there were more than a few questions about who would set up and help the defense, missing seven starters from 2019. Two players on that side earned regular praise from Clark after practices and appear primed for more responsibility: senior outside linebacker Tim Frizzell and sophomore defensive lineman Hansky Paillant. The two epitomize the belief of staying ready for their moments.

First with Frizzell: He started his first game in 2018 as a sophomore, a near-victory at Penn State. But he would tear his left labrum that season, optioning to play through and appear in 11 games instead of redshirt. "Just grit and determination, and knowing what I really wanted to do for the team and the impact I could still give them," Frizzell said on playing through the pain. After recovering, he clawed his way back into the rotation in 2019. Frizzell played 13 games while working with outside linebackers and the defensive line. - Winston-Salem Journal

Elijah Diarrassouba made a hard decision last week. And because of what he picked, the Appalachian State defense will be without yet another important voice from a unit that helped the program win 13 games in 2019. Diarrassouba, a two-year starter at defensive end set to be a senior this season, announced through Twitter that he would retire because of an ongoing hip issue that will require surgery. The Greensboro resident and Page High School graduate said he decided late last week, letting App State coaches and trainers know that his career was ending. For him, it wasn't so much about the pain as it was his physical reality. "The main thing that really triggered me to make this decision was not being able to move and do the things that I wanted to do," Diarrassouba said. "My body wasn't free. It just wasn't free and loose to do everything I wanted to do." - Winston-Salem Journal

A career reserve, Duke's Chris Katrenick is getting his shot as a No. 1 quarterback this spring. After a knee injury wiped out his 2019 season, Gunnar Holmberg is healthy and getting a copious amount of snaps at quarterback as well as the Blue Devils began spring practices this week. A couple hundred miles away, Chase Brice monitors it all via modern technology, staying in touch with Duke's coaches so he can stay as up to speed as possible while he completes his Clemson degree before enrolling at Duke this summer.

Tasked with replacing departing starting quarterback Quentin Harris, the Blue Devils find themselves in a complicated situation as they decide who will be their new starter this fall. Katrenick and Holmberg have experience in Duke coach David Cutcliffe's program but haven't had enough game repetitions to establish themselves as a clear-cut choice. A transfer, Brice has game experience but can't participate in Duke's spring drills because he's yet to graduate from Clemson. - Herald Sun

Darrynton Evans, Appalachian State's star running back, has set his sights on the NFL. The redshirt junior announced on Wednesday that he will forgo his final collegiate season, declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft. Evans shared his decision on Twitter, doing so on the four-year anniversary of the day he announced his commitment to the Mountaineers. Evans is coming off one of the best seasons for a running back at App State, closing a career that started with big plays in big moments. In 2019, Evans tied a Sun Belt record with 24 total touchdowns to go along with 1,480 rushing yards, the fourth-highest total in program history.
