Chase Brice threw for four touchdowns, ran for another and Appalachian State rolled to a 49-0 win on Saturday over The Citadel. The Mountaineers' (3-2) first four games were decided by four points or fewer but that wasn't the case against the Bulldogs (2-2), who they outgained 545-223. It was the 43rd meeting between the teams but the first nonconference game between them since the Mountaineers left for the FBS. The Mountaineers scored touchdowns on five of their first six possessions in taking off to a 35-0 lead.

Brice was 12-of-18 passing for 265 yards with two of his scoring throws going to Christian Horn, one an 80-yarder. Horn's older brother, Brian Horn, plays linebacker for The Citadel. Christian Horn finished with 132 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Camerun Peoples rushed for 102 yards, 73 coming on a second-quarter TD. Bulldogs grad transfer quarterback Peyton Derrick started his collegiate career at Appalachian State, where he spent two years before playing three seasons at Wofford. The triple-option oriented Bulldogs couldn't generate much offense, picking up 172 yards on 59 attempts for a 2.9 average. The Kennesaw, Ga., product led the Mountaineer defensive unit that held the Trojans to just seven second-half points and 57 total rushing yards in the conference opener. With App State trailing 28-26 with 2 seconds on the clock redshirt senior quarterback Chase Brice heaved a fourth-down Hail Mary attempt that Dalton Stroman tipped at the 5-yard line to a streaking Horn, who followed a Kaedin Robinson block into the end zone for the miraculous 53-yard game-winning touchdown. Chase Brice fired a 53-yard scoring strike to Christan Horn on the final play of the game and Appalachian State pulled out a 32-28 victory over Troy in a Sun Belt Conference opener on Saturday. Brice drove Appalachian State (2-1) down the field before throwing incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line with 1:13 left in the game. Appalachian State tackled Gunnar Watson on first down for a safety to get within 28-26 and took over at their own 47-yard line with 15 seconds left following the kickoff.

Brice's game-winning throw came on fourth-and-10. Wide receiver Dashaun Davis staked the Mountaineers to a 7-0 lead with a 17-yard scoring strike to Christian Wells. Watson had two 1-yard touchdown runs in the second quarter to give Troy (1-2) a 21-14 lead at halftime. Brice completed 22 of 34 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns. Horn had five catches for 98 yards. Watson completed 23 of 37 passes for 302 yards with one interception for the Trojans. On paper, there was no reason to believe that Appalachian State would have a chance Saturday against No. 6 Texas A&M. But Mountaineers coach Shawn Clark, who makes 10 times less than the over $9 million Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher receives each season at the Southeastern Conference school, made it clear to his 18 1/2-point underdog team that the game is not played on paper and mindset would mean everything. "The key was belief," an exhausted Clark said. "You have to believe in yourself and believe in this program. I told them take the logo off of the helmet, take the logo off the field and let's go play football." And play football they did, with Chase Brice throwing for 134 yards and a touchdown and a stingy defense taking advantage of two turnovers to stun the Aggies 17-14.

"It didn't feel real at first," Brice said. "I'll be honest, I was just in shock. I just couldn't believe the way we fought and finished. It was just great." Appalachian State won a week after scoring six touchdowns and 40 points in the fourth quarter in a 63-61 opening loss to North Carolina. "It means something to me to beat the No. 6-ranked program," Clark said. "It's two different programs. We don't recruit at the same level. We don't have what they have, but we have a lot of heart and we have the right kind of players in our program." Clark was thrilled to see Brice lead his team to the win after his school-record six-touchdown performance last week wasn't enough to complete the comeback. "He was crushed," Clark said. "He loves this program and today was his shining moment." Appalachian State's 40 points in the fourth quarter of its 63-61 loss to North Carolina were the most by a team in a quarter since BYU hung 42 on Massachusetts in the second in 2019 and most by a team in a fourth quarter in 20 years, according to Sportradar. According to Stats Perform, Saturday marked the first time an FBS team scored at least 60 points and lost and an FBS scored fewer than 10 points and won on the same day. Coach Ken Niumatalolo firmly stated Thursday that he feels good about the Navy football team one week before opening preseason practice. Niumatalolo, entering his 15th season helming the Midshipmen, based his assessment off what he saw throughout the offseason. Navy was forced to alter its normal routines in 2020 and 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic. This offseason was back to normal. "I'm really excited about this team. I love what our players did during the offseason from January to now. They've been working really hard," Niumatalolo said during the American Athletic Conference football media day. "Just a selfless group that cares about one another. I'm really excited about the makeup of our football team." Apparently, outsiders don't have nearly as positive an outlook on the Midshipmen.

Navy was predicted to place 10th out of 11 teams in the AAC preseason media poll, which was released Thursday morning. Navy, coming off consecutive losing seasons, received 61 total votes - 10 less than ninth place South Florida. Temple, which finished 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the AAC last season, was picked last with just 28 votes. "I think a lot of it is based on the last two years and the way our record has been," Niumatalolo said. "We like being picked as the underdog." - Capital Times
