  Qwynnterrio Cole made a big fourth-down stop at midfield, Taurence Wilson returned an interception 53 yards with 1:23 left and Alcorn State earned a trip to the Celebration Bowl with a 39-24 win over Southern in the Southwest Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday night. After Cole's stop, De'Shawn Waller ripped of a 31-yard run, Niko Duffey had an 11-yard run and the Jaguars chose to let Waller score from 6 yards on the next play, allowing the Braves to go up 32-24 with 1:57 to play.

Three plays later, Wilson stepped in front of a LaDarius Skelton pass and sealed Alcorn State's 17th SWAC title and their second straight trip and third overall to meet the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion in the Celebration Bowl. The opponent on Dec. 21 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta is two-time defending Celebration Bowl champion North Carolina A&T. The Aggies beat Alcorn State 24-22 last year and 41-34 in the inaugural Celebration Bowl in 2015. - AP College Football

Harper took the league by storm this season after taking over as the Braves starter at quarterback.   Felix Harper threw four first-half touchdown passes and then ran for a score after intermission to guide Alcorn State to a 47-6 thumping of Jackson State on Saturday. Harper's first two scoring strikes went to LeCharles Pringle - a 33-yarder in the first quarter and a 21-yarder in the second - giving the Braves (8-3, 6-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a 14-0 lead. After Greg Blue's 34-yard field goal extended Alcorn State's lead to 17-0, Harper connected with Juan Anthony Jr. for a 6-yard TD and hit Chris Blair for a 14-yard score and a 31-0 halftime lead.

The Braves clinched the SWAC's East Division and will play either Southern or Grambling for the SWAC championship. Southern and Grambling square off for the West Division title next Saturday. Harper completed 17 of 32 passes for 261 yards and tacked on an 11-yard TD run in the third quarter. Blair led the receivers with six catches for 136 yards. Niko Duffey ran for 74 yards on 12 carries as Alcorn State outgained the Tigers 352 yards to 105. Jalon Jones was 7-of-14 passing for 102 yards with an interception for the Tigers (4-8, 3-4). He was also sacked four times. Jackson State managed just 3 yards rushing on 26 carries. - AP College Football

  Felix Harper threw four touchdown passes - three to LeCharles Pringle - and their 44-yard TD connection proved the difference in Alcorn State's 34-28 win over Alabama A&M on Saturday. That pass play with 11:44 remaining marked the Braves' (7-3, 5-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) second lead of the game. They went up 27-21 when Harper threw a 42-yard TD pass to Raidarious Anderson with 9:27 left in the third. Prior to that the Bulldogs (6-5, 3-3) were in control.

Alabama A&M outgained the Braves 531-522 in total yards and held time of possession 32:32-27:28. The Bulldogs were also 7 of 14 on third-down conversions to 4 of 10 for Alcorn State. Harper was 18-of-27 passing for 288 yards, Pringle had four receptions for 113 yards and Niko Duffey had 17 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Bentley for the Bulldogs had 245 yards rushing on 29 carries and scored four times. The Braves are in sole possession of first place in the SWAC's east division with Alabama State (5-5, 4-2) a game back. - AP College Football

  2019 WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCHLIST ADDITION: QB Felix Harper, Alcorn State,...Harper, from Fairburn, Georgia, currently ranks third in the nation in offensive efficiency (186.1), fourth in points responsible for (20.0 ppg), top-10 in yards per completion (14.8) and top-15 in completion percentage (.656) and passing TDs (20). Since taking over as the starting quarterback over the last five games in-place of an injured Johnson, Harper has thrown for 1,423 yards, 18 touchdowns and no interceptions.

Harper has won SWAC Offensive Player of the Week three times. He was named the HBCU National Player of the Week winner after the win over Prairie View A&M where he threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns, and also rushed for a score.   Alcorn State coach Fred McNair likes how his players focus amid the emotions and distractions that surround big games. That was important on Saturday when Alcorn beat Southern 27-13 for its best win of the season. It was Homecoming Day at Spinks-Casem Stadium; the Braves retired the No. 9 of all-time great Steve McNair, Fred's late brother; and it was a rematch of last year's Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game. "They know how to handle this big stage," said McNair, whose squad, the STATS FCS Team of the Week, improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the SWAC. "That's the thing that we as coaches remind them of, making sure that things don't get too big for them. They kind of keep themselves in good spirits. These guys were locked in and it's testament to those guys and how they prepare themselves to win every day on the practice field."

Junior quarterback Felix Harper fueled Alcorn in the matchup of division leaders. He finished with 287 yards of total offense and rushed for a touchdown and passed for two more as the Braves scored 24 unanswered points on their first four possessions of the second half. In five starts since earning the No. 1 job due to an injury to 2018 SWAC offensive player of the year Noah Johnson, Harper has thrown 18 touchdowns without an interception. - AP College Football

  Felix Harper threw for 277 yards and accounted for three touchdowns and Alcorn State scored 24 consecutive points in the second half to defeat Southern 27-13 on Saturday. It was a rematch of the 2018 Southwestern Athletic Conference championship game. Trailing 6-3 early in the third quarter, Harper scored on a 1-yard run for a 10-6 lead. Later in the second half, he threw four yards to De'Shawn Waller for a touchdown, Corey McCullough kicked a 31-yard field goal and Harper threw for another touchdown -- 11 yards to LeCharles Pringle. With Alcorn State leading 27-6 late in the fourth quarter, Southern's Ladarius Skelton threw a 12-yard scoring pass to Hunter Register for the final points. Waller led the Braves (6-2, 4-0) in rushing, carrying 22 times for 81 yards. Chris Blair caught three passes for 108 yards. The Jaguars (4-4, 3-1) were held to 209 yards of total offense.   OCT 14 SWAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Felix Harper (5-11, 180, R-Jr., QB, Fairburn, Ga.), Alcorn State,...Harper threw for 324 yards and five touchdowns in Alcorn's 42-17 win over Savannah State on Homecoming. He was 16-for-21 passing with no interceptions. Two of his TD's came on bomb passes as he connected with Chris Blair for 71 yards and Juan Anthony for 84 yards.   OCT 7 SWAC NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Alcorn State Niko Duffey (5-11, 175, Fr., RB, Tampa, Fla.),...Duffey rushed for a game-high 101 yards in Alcorn's 35-7 victory over Alabama State on Saturday. He also scored a touchdown as he broke loose for a 67-yarder. Duffey also recorded a 24-yard rush in the first quarter. He averaged 11.2 yards per carry.   Once the lightning passed, Alcorn State brought the thunder, forcing five turnovers and defeating Alabama State 35-7 in a Southwest Athletic Conference showdown Saturday night. Kickoff was delayed four hours by lightning in the Montgomery area. Alcorn State (4-2, 3-0) scored twice off Alabama State (2-3, 1-1) turnovers to start the game. Solomon Muhammad intercepted KHA'Darris Davis' first pass ending the Hornets' opening drive at the 10. LeCharles Pringle caught an 8-yard TD pass from Felix Harper three plays later to put Alcorn State on the board.

Davis fumbled on Alabama State's next drive trying to avoid a sack. Keyron Kinsler Jr. recovered for the Braves and Harper ran 18 yards to make the lead 14-0 with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Davis was taken off the field by stretcher late in the fourth quarter. Kinsler intercepted Davis to end Alabama State's third drive and the Braves scored twice more before halftime.
