  Seven McGee caught a 75-yard touchdown pass, the Albany defense accounted for another score and the Great Danes held off Long Island 27-21 on Saturday night in the season opener for both teams. Luca Stanzani drove the Sharks to the Albany 39 in the final minute, but the drive stalled when Stanzani was stuffed for just a 1-yard gain on fourth-and-10 with 47 seconds left.

Myles Burkett connected with McGee on the long scoring throw that gave Albany a 17-14 lead with 30 seconds left before halftime. Jack Iuliano scored on a 20-yard fumble return for a touchdown about three minutes earlier. Burkett was 12-of-26 passing for 165 yards. McGee finished with 119 yards receiving on five catches. Griffin Woodell added 85 yards on the ground on 20 carries that included a 3-yard touchdown run that gave Albany a 24-21 lead with 9:57 left. Stanzani completed 20 of 31 passes for 179 yards with three touchdowns. Ludovick Choquette added 128 yards rushing on 15 carries for the Sharks. - AP College Football

  2023 CAA FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Dylan Kelly, UAlbany,...Kelly led the CAA and ranked second in the FCS with 145 total tackles, breaking UAlbany's season record that had stood since 1974. He recorded 10 or more stops nine times, including a career-best 23 stops against Towson on Oct. 7 which were the most by any player in FCS this season. Kelly added 8.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble and two fumble recoveries for a UAlbany defense that led the nation in rushing defense (79.1 ypg), ranked 6th in scoring defense (17.2 ppg) and 8th in total defense (295.3 ypg). - CAA Football

  2023 CAA FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Griffin Woodell, UAlbany,...Woodell rushed for a team-high 694 yards and six touchdowns and added 24 receptions for 231 yards and four touchdowns. The freshman ran for more than 100 yards in three of the Great Danes' final five games, including a 136-yard effort against Stony Brook.   Jacari Carter enrolled in January after transferring from Merrimack, where he earned all-conference and Freshman All-America honors at the FCS level. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining. Carter caught 125 passes for 1,227 yards and 13 touchdowns in 25 games at Merrimack. As a freshman in 2021, he had 89 receptions for 713 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 games in 2021. His 89 receptions were four shy of Cooper Kupp's FCS season record.

Head coach Shawn Elliott has been impressed with Carter since he arrived on campus. "He has done an exceptional job," Elliott said. "He has fit in so well with our football program. He's intelligent, he's an extremely hard worker and he's a good leader. He's small in stature, but he plays big.   2022 ALL-CAA FOOTBALL FIRST TEAM: Thomas Greaney, UAlbany, TE, Sr.,...Thomas Greaney, a senior tight end from Bedford, Mass., was UAlbany's lone representative on the All-CAA First Team. Greaney was Poffenbarger's favorite target in 2022, recording 50 receptions for 693 yards and nine receiving touchdowns, all of which led the Great Danes this season. Kelly was UAlbany's leading tackler in 2022, recording 97.0 (61 solo) and one sack from the linebacker position. He also recorded one interception, in UAlbany's home finale against Maine.   Victor Dawson scored on a 4-yard run to cap Merrimack's fourth-quarter comeback and the Warriors defeated Long Island University 24-23 on Saturday in a Northeast Conference opener for both teams. Dawson's touchdown came with 3 1/2 minutes left and gave Merrimack (3-2, 1-0) its first lead. The Warriors closed within 23-17 on Gavin McCusker's 18-yard pass to Hayden Fisher to open the fourth quarter. Merrimack's other touchdown came on a 64-yard play from McCusker to Jacari Carter in the first half. The Sharks (0-5, 0-1) scored 17 second-quarter points to take a 20-10 halftime lead that included Derek Green's 15-yard scoring pass to Tosin Oyekanmi and Pat Bowen's 86-yard touchdown run. Michael Coney kicked three field goals for LIU and Lliam Davis one for the Warriors. Dawson finished with 110 yards rushing and Carter 105 yards receiving. Bowen had 102 yards rushing.   Thomas Greaney caught two touchdown passes and his brother, defensive lineman Joseph, scooped up a fumble and rumbled 77 yards for his first career touchdown as Albany defeated Central Connecticut, 45-29 on Saturday. Todd Sibley raced 97 yards for a touchdown on the game's first offensive play to give the Great Danes (1-3) a lead they never surrendered and finished with 190 yards on 18 carries. Albany had 224 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns on the ground. Reese Poffenbarger was 18-of-26 passing for 257 yards and two touchdowns.

Nasir Smith ran for 108 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries to lead the Blue Devils (0-4). Shon Mitchell was held to 116 yards on 7-of-16 passing. Mitchell dropped back to pass on fourth down in the red zone, but the Albany pass rush pressured him into a fumble at the Great Danes' 23 and Joseph Greaney scooped up the loose ball and ran untouched for the touchdown with 11:16 left in the third quarter.   Receiver Jacari Carter uncorked a 54-yard touchdown pass to Jelani Mason to stake Merrimack to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and the Warriors ground out 173 yards rushing to earn a 26-13 win over Delaware State in a non-conference battle Saturday. Merrimack (2-2) held the Hornets to just 32 yards on the ground and 164 yards of total offense. Victor Dawson ran for eight yards on fourth down at the Delaware State 18 in the first quarter, giving Merrimack a first-and-goal then carried twice to score the game's first touchdown, bulling in from the 2 with 4:16 left to give Merrimack a lead it never surrendered. After the Warriors defense held the Hornets to a three-and-out, Carter took the handoff in the backfield, then launched the deep pass to Mason to make it 14-0. Six running backs shared 40 carries in the Merrimack running game, with Dawson, E'Lijah Gray and Tyvon Edmonds Jr. combining for 35 rushes. C.J.   2022 PRESEASON ALL-NORTHEAST CONFERENCE FOOTBALL TEAM: WR Jacari Carter, Merrimack, So.,...Carter was the lone Warrior on the offensive All-Northeast Conference Preseason team. Carter compiled one of the most prolific offensive seasons in program history in 2021. The Sayreville, N.J. native had 89 catches for 713 yard and eight touchdowns a season ago. He came up just a few receptions shy of breaking the record for freshman catches at the FCS level.
