Trea Shropshire had five receptions for 180 yards - including a 71-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter - and Spencer Brown had 30 carries for 149 yards rushing to help UAB beat Marshall 22-13 on Friday night for the Blazers' second Conference USA championship in the last three years. Tyler Johnston III was 12-of-22 passing for 252 yards and two touchdowns for UAB (6-3). UAB became the first school to reach the championship game for the third straight season, all on the road. The Blazers, who resumed their football program in 2017 after it was cut following the 2014 season, won the title at Middle Tennessee in 2018 and lost at Florida Atlantic last year.

Grant Wells was 8-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdowns for the Thundering Herd (7-2). UAB was clinging to a two-point lead and facing a third-and-6 from its own 29 when Johnston lofted a ball to Shropshire, who caught it near midfield and raced to the end zone to cap the scoring with 4:02 left. Marshall entered the game with the nation’s top scoring defense (11.4 points per game) and the second-best rushing defense (73 yards per game). The Thundering Herd gave up more than 20 points for the first time this season and allowed a season-high 216 yards rushing. - AP College Football

2020 PATRICK MANNELLY AWARD SEMIFINALIST: Jacob Fuqua, UAB,...A four year starter who handles both short and long snaps, Fuqua is having a tremendous season in his final year wearing the Green and Gold. Along with his pin-point snapping, the All-Conference performer also has two tackles, a forced fumble (at Miami) and a fumble recovery (vs. Central Arkansas). He has been a major factor into the success of FWAA Freshman All-America Watch List member Matt Quinn. With Fuqua's help, Quinn has made each of his last seven field goals and is 8-of-9 overall, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond 40 yards.

Quinn has also made all 27 of his point after attempts. From a punting standpoint, Fuqua has been on target all year as junior Kyle Greenwell is averaging 42.9 yards per punt. Fuqua has been a cornerstone member of the UAB special teams unit since 2016. Along with his on-field performance, the Williamson, Ga. native is a 4.0 student earning his Master's of Education and was a watch list member for the William V.   IMG Academy has fielded a football team since 2013 and Bryson Lucero is the only quarterback to spend his entire career as an Ascender. However, Lucero started only four games during his entire high school career -- all within his senior season -- as he sat behind former Ole Miss and Michigan signal-caller Shea Patterson and current Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. Despite a concise prep career and forgoing Ivy League offers to Harvard and Yale, Lucero signed with UAB's 2019 signing class and now has two starts under his belt after assuming command of the offense following an injury to Tyler Johnston III that left the incumbent indefinitely sidelined. "I see it as an incredible opportunity," Lucero said. "A lot of people will see that I only started four games in high school, and two now. I got a lot of things to work on, and with experience and everything, I totally understand the challenge."

A microdose of a career that included 823 passing yards and 13 touchdowns did not invite a slew of recruiters to the IMG Academy campus in Bradenton, Florida and a trip to Birmingham was all Lucero needed in making the decision to sign with Bill Clark and the Blazers. "When I came down to UAB, it just felt like a really good fit for me," Lucero said. "Coach Clark, Coach (Bryant) Vincent, and really the whole staff, and knowing what direction Coach Clark was taking the program was something that I really enjoyed and something I was looking forward to being a part of." - Birmingham Post Herald

Gerrit Prince caught two touchdown passes and Myron Mitchell had one. Sincere McCormick ran for 150 yards and a touchdown to lead UTSA (3-1, 1-1). Lucero's 21-yard TD pass to Prince stretched the Blazers' lead to 21-6 late in the third quarter. McCormick's 2-yard touchdown run capped the scoring with 10:31 remaining. The Roadrunners' final drive stalled at the UAB 40 when Lowell Narcisse threw an incomplete on fourth-and-17 with 4:40 to play. - AP College Football

Spencer Brown rushed for three touchdowns in setting a UAB career record, fellow senior Austin Watkins Jr. had a career-high 183 yards receiving with a score, and the Blazers defeated South Alabama 42-10 on Thursday night. Brown, the second-leading active career FBS rusher behind Clemson's Travis Etienne, finished with 105 yards on 20 carries with his third score giving him 36 rushing touchdowns, passing Pat Green (1991-94). Watkins made seven catches including a 56-yard reception and a 15-yard fourth-quarter score.

The game featured teams that both returned to play after a two-week break with new starting quarterbacks. Redshirt freshman Bryson Lucero started for the Blazers (2-1) with Tyler Johnston III sidelined with an injured non-throwing shoulder. The Jaguars (1-2) went with JC transfer Chance Lovertich in place of Desmond Trotter, also dealing with a shoulder injury. All of Brown's scores came in the first half on runs of 15, 1 and 20 yards. Lucero's 6-yard TD pass to Trea Shropshire gave the Blazers a 28-10 halftime lead. Lucero finished 18-of-28 passing for 319 yards and two touchdowns. - AP College Football
