  Georgia State quarterback Quad Brown has had an interesting start to his career. In less than two months he's gone from being an unknown quantity to the Football Writers Association of America's Freshman All-American watch list. Despite that huge leap, Brown continues to learn on the job and has set some high standards. "He can throw a little bit, he's a great athlete who can stretch you in the running game," Georgia State coach Shawn Elliott said. "His decision-making is improved, and he's got a good understanding of the offense, and I'm pleased with that."

A redshirt freshman, Brown leads the Sun Belt Conference and ranks 14th in FBS with 307 yards per game. The only freshman with better numbers is Spencer Rattler of Oklahoma. Last week Brown tied a school record with five touchdowns against Arkansas State, throwing for 314 yards and rushing for another 83. "He does a lot of good things and is playing at a high level," Elliott said. "We didn't know how quickly that would come. We knew we had some surrounding pieces, but didn't know how quickly he could develop and manage the offense. He's done a good job. He still makes some bonehead decisions, but being a freshman, you've got to go through that. He's where we'd hoped he'd be." - Marietta Daily Journal

  Redshirt freshman quarterback Cornelious Brown IV tied the GSU record by accounting for five touchdowns against Arkansas State. He threw three TD passes, all to Sam Pinckney, while rushing for scores of 35 and 11 yards. He finished with 314 yards passing on 18 completions and 83 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Brown, a native of Birmingham, Ala., leads the Sun Belt and ranks No. 14 in FBS with 307.0 yards per game.   Cornelious Brown IV threw for three touchdowns, including two to Sam Pinckney, Destin Coates rushed for two scores and Georgia State defeated East Carolina 49-29 on Saturday. The Panthers (1-1) rolled up 303 yards offense on their way to a 35-13 halftime lead, setting a school record for points in a half. On the game's first play from scrimmage, Brown had his pass intercepted in the flat and returned 28 yards for a touchdown by Warren Saba. But the Panthers scored on their next three drives in under seven minutes, including touchdown passes of 38 yards to Pinckney and 22 yards to Jamari Thrash. Brown added a 13-yard score to Pinckney, and Coates and Tucker Gregg had TD runs for a 22-point halftime lead. The lead reached 42-16 early in the fourth quarter on Antavious Lane's 34-yard interception return. Brown finished 18-of-28 passing with two interceptions. Pinckney, a sophomore, made seven catches for a career-high 134 yards, and Coates had 23 carries for 113 yards. The Panthers outgained the Pirates 485-292. Holton Ahlers was 29-of-50 passing for 242 yards with no scores and three interceptions for ECU (0-2), which rushed for only 50 yards.   A second true freshman on Michigan's football team is considering a departure. Osman Savage, a four-star linebacker in the Wolverines' 2020 recruiting class, entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal this week, team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed to MLive on Wednesday. A Baltimore native, Savage was a four-star prospect in recruiting service 247Sports' composite rankings out of St. Frances Academy.   Cornelious "Quad" Brown has won the quarterback job at Georgia State. The redshirt freshman from Calera, Ala., will start when the Panthers open the season Sept. 19 against Louisiana-Lafayette. The lanky Brown (6-foot-5, 200 pounds) is a good runner with a strong arm. He won the job ahead of Jamil Muhammad, a redshirt freshman who transferred from Vanderbilt, and redshirt freshman K.J. Harvey. "Quad has got a little better understanding of the offense than the other quarterbacks at this time," coach Shawn Elliott said. "He was down there repping with the offense all last fall, and that helped him with his development. He wasn't down there on the scout team taking a bunch of reps in other types of offenses. He was running our offense and that helped."

Brown played four games as a freshman and completed 11 of 28 passes for 130 yards. He threw one interception. He ran four times for 15 yards. "Plus he's got the athleticism," Elliott said. "He's got the tools to run the ball, and he's got a big, strong arm...He's got a fantastic arm and he can really cover some ground with those long legs. And he's got a lot of confidence; Quad's a confident guy. We just felt like he's going to be the guy to start against (Louisiana-Lafayette)." - Marietta Daily Journal

  As had been expected for several weeks, Dee Anderson is officially a Cowboy. Oklahoma State posted on Twitter a list of its incoming signees for the 2020 recruiting class, including Anderson's name. The 6-foot-6, 229-pound receiver is a senior graduate transfer from LSU. His arrival at OSU had been anticipated, though he had not made any specific announcements of his transfer destination. Anderson did not play in 2019, which would have been his senior season. He was suspended from the team for what LSU coach Ed Orgeron termed a "conditioning issue." Instead, he redshirted, making him eligible to leave as a grad transfer. Anderson caught 20 passes for 274 yards as a junior in 2018. Originally a four-star recruit, Anderson is from DeSoto, Texas, which has produced for OSU the likes of recently departed cornerback A.J. Green, senior running back LD Brown and incoming freshman Jabbar Muhammad. - Stillwater Press
