Michigan State Football   Michigan State starting linebacker Wayne Matthews has been taken off the Coliseum field on a cart after getting hurt while making a tackle in the Spartans' game against No. 25 Southern California on Saturday night. Matthews was hurt while tackling USC running back Waymond Jordan in the red zone with 42 seconds left in the second quarter. Matthews' teammates signaled for help from the sideline after he didn't get up from a pile of players, and Michigan State's medical personnel immediately tended to Matthews on the field.

Matthews, whose jersey was cut off on the field, was eventually loaded onto a backboard and a cart while players from both teams watched reverently. The linebacker appeared to give a thumbs-up to his teammates before he was driven across the field and up the Coliseum tunnel. The Spartans gathered for a team prayer huddle before they continued the game. Matthews is a fifth-year senior who spent his first three collegiate seasons at Old Dominion before joining Michigan State last year. He had two tackles against USC, giving him 26 in the Spartans' first four games. Michigan State's other starting linebacker, Jordan Hall, was ejected in the second quarter for targeting. USC scored on the first play after Matthews' injury and eventually took a 24-10 lead into halftime. - AP College Football

LSU Football   Jesus Gomez kicked a 43-yard field goal on the game's final play to give defending Big 12 champion Arizona State a 27-24 win over Baylor on Saturday night in the conference opener for both teams. It was the fourth field goal of the game for Gomez, a left-footed senior transfer from Eastern Michigan. He also made kicks of 31, 21 and 33 yards, and is 9-of-10 for the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-0 Big 12). Sam Leavitt completed 22 of 32 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score for Arizona State. Baylor (2-2, 0-1) tied the game 24-24 with 1:52 left on Sawyer Robertson's 33-yard TD strike to Ole Miss transfer Michael Trigg, whose 1-yard catch and stretch for a touchdown had put the Bears up 17-16 with 9:02 left.

The Sun Devils responded to Trigg's second TD with an 11-play scoring drive, and Gomez booted the go-ahead kick right down the middle as time expired. Arizona State moved the ball into Baylor territory on its game-winning drive after a personal foul penalty followed a 3-yard completion from Leavitt to preseason All-America receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson caught the third-down pass in stride and slid to the ground just before Bears defensive back DJ Coleman ran into him. Robertson was 25 of 39 passing for 251 yards and three TDs.   LSU Football   Garrett Nussmeier threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth and No. 3 LSU easily beat Southeastern Louisiana 56-10 on Saturday night. The Tigers (4-0) erupted for 28 points in the second quarter to put the game quickly out of reach in only the third meeting between the schools. "We have a standard of how we want to play and I thought we upheld that standard," LSU coach Brian Kelly said. "There is no perfection out there, but there was definitely some progress." Up by a touchdown early in the second quarter, LSU scored on back-to-back drives, on scoring runs of 2 and 10 yards by running back Ju'Juan Johnson.

LSU's defense, which held the Lions (2-2) to 30 yards of total offense in the first half, forced a three and out late in the second quarter. Nussmeier then drove the offense down the field, completing passes to Bauer Sharp for 6 yards and a pair to Barion Brown including a 17 yarder for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead. LSU finished the first half with an 8-play, 56-yard drive, culminating in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier to Zavion Thomas, extending the lead to 35-0. Nussmeier, who Kelly said has been dealing with a torso injury early in the season, finished 25 of 31 for 273 yards before exiting after throwing a 23-yard touchdown pass to Sharp on the opening series of the third quarter. With most of the LSU starting defense on the sidelines to start the second half, Southeastern Louisiana's lone TD came midway through the third quarter on a 14-yard pass by Carson Camp to Deantre Jackson. - LSU/AP College Football

BYU Football   BYU's Evan Johnson had a goal-line interception followed by a short pick-6 on East Carolina's next throw to help the Cougars beat the Pirates 34-13 on Saturday night. Johnson's takeaways highlighted the win for BYU (3-0), which had allowed just three points through wins against Portland State and Stanford. The defense twice kept the Pirates (2-2) out of the end zone on drives that breached BYU's 10-yard line. Johnson cut in front of a bad-decision throw by Katin Houser for a TD-preventing pick that ended one second-quarter drive, while BYU held ECU to a third-quarter field goal after taking a 20-3 lead.

Johnson's score stood out, coming after ECU muffed a punt return to start from its own 1 with 59 seconds before halftime. On the next snap, Houser threw left toward Anthony Smith, only to see Johnson pounce on the route for an easy score. BYU's Bear Bachmeier accounted for two touchdowns, hitting Carsen Ryan for a 20-yarder in the third and scoring on a 16-yard keeper in the fourth. LJ Martin broke free for a 41-yard TD with 3:44 left as a punctuating score. BYU surrendered its first touchdown this year on Houser's 2-yard run midway through the fourth, though the Cougars led 27-6 by that point. - BYU/AP College Football

Oklahoma Football   Oklahoma got away with one on a second-quarter touchdown against Auburn on Saturday. Before Isaiah Sategna's 24-yard touchdown catch from John Mateer, he appeared to be running off the field. Instead, he stopped, ran a pattern and ended up wide open for the score. It was a crucial play in No. 11 Oklahoma's 24-17 win over the 22nd-ranked Tigers. The Southeastern Conference mentioned the play on its SEC Officiating X account, saying simulated replacements or substitutions cannot be used to confuse opponents. "The officiating crew did not properly interpret the action as a hideout tactic. If properly officiated, the second-down play should have resulted in a team unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of 15 yards assessed from the previous spot. Appropriate accountability will be applied without additional comment." Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, visibly upset after the play, said he tried to call a timeout before it unfolded, but it wasn't granted. "I guarantee you - well, I'd better be quiet," Freeze said. "Said they didn't hear us trying to call timeout. Yeah, we'll see. We were instructed all offseason about deception plays and things. So we'll see what's said.” - AP College Football
