Penn State Football   MIDSEASON AP BIG TEN MOST DISAPPOINTING TEAM: Penn State was the unanimous choice following its colossal collapse. The Nittany Lions brought back their quarterback and a pair of 1,000-yard rushers, and they were ranked No. 2 in the preseason. Wins over soft opposition were followed by consecutive losses to Oregon (home), UCLA (away) and Northwestern (home). The Lions were favored by 21-plus points in the last two. James Franklin, who led the Lions to a College Football Playoff semifinal last year, was fired after the Northwestern game. - AP College Football

Indiana Football   Indiana climbed to No. 3 in college football's AP Top 25 poll, scoring its highest ranking in poll history. The Hoosiers can thank their 10-point win at Oregon for the four-spot promotion, while the Ducks dropped five spots to No. 8, their lowest ranking in 20 polls. Ohio State and Miami remained the top two teams. No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 5 Mississippi traded places after the Aggies' 17-point home win over Florida and the Rebels' three-point home win over Washington State.

The slew of Week 7 losses by ranked teams also made room for five arrivals in the poll, including No. 20 USC and No. 21 Texas. The Longhorns were the preseason No. 1 team, but dropped out of the rankings last week after losses to Ohio State and Florida. With five teams - Michigan, Illinois, Arizona State, Iowa State and Florida State - dropping out, it was the most turnover in a regular-season poll since October 2022. - AP College Football

Penn State Football   James Franklin is out at Penn State. The school fired the longtime head coach on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern all but ended whatever remote chance the preseason No. 2 team had of reaching the College Football Playoff. Terry Smith will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season for the Nittany Lions (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten), who began the year with hopes of winning the national title only to have those hopes evaporate by early October amid a string of losses, each one more stinging than the last. Penn State, which reached the CFP semifinals 10 months ago, fell at home to Oregon in overtime in late September. A road loss at previously winless UCLA followed. The final straw came on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, where the Nittany Lions let Northwestern escape with a victory and lost quarterback Drew Allar to injury for the rest of the season.

Franklin went 104-45 during his 11-plus seasons at Penn State. Yet the Nittany Lions often stumbled against top-tier opponents, going 4-21 against teams ranked in the top 10 during his tenure. There was hope this fall might be the one when Penn State would finally break through. Yet after three easy wins during a light non-conference schedule, the Nittany Lions crumbled. Athletic director Pat Kraft said the school owes Franklin - who is owed nearly $50 million in a buyout - an "enormous amount of gratitude" for leading the Nittany Lions back to relevance but felt it was time to make a change. "We hold our athletics programs to the highest of standards, and we believe this is the right moment for new leadership at the helm of our football program to advance us toward Big Ten and national championships," Kraft said. - AP College Football

Oregon State Football   Oregon State fired coach Trent Bray on Sunday after the team fell to 0-7, its worst start to a season since 1991. Robb Akey will be the interim head coach for the rest of the seson pending a national search for Bray’s successor, athletic director Scott Barnes said. "I want to thank Coach Bray for the energy and determination he brought to the role. A former student-athlete, proud graduate, and dedicated mentor, Trent’s connection to Oregon State runs deep - he will always be a Beaver," Barnes said. "This was a difficult decision, but the results on the field were not acceptable and after evaluating every aspect of the football program, I believe it is in the best interests of OSU football student-athletes, our fans and our university."

The move came a day after backup quarterback Deshawn Purdie threw for 270 yards and four touchdowns in his first start for Wake Forest and the visiting Demon Deacons beat Oregon State 39-14 in front of a listless home crowd. The Beavers haven’t started this poorly since 1991, when they started 0-10. After the game, Bray said he planned to keep showing up "until they tell me I can’t." - AP College Football

Hawaii Football   Micah Alejado threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score on Saturday night to help Hawaii beat Utah State 44-26 for the Rainbow Warriors' first win over the Aggies since 2010. Alejado was 34-of-54 passing for 413 yards and three touchdowns - all to Pofele Ashlock - and scored on a 15-yard run that gave Hawaii (5-2, 2-1 Mountain West Conference) a 34-26 lead with 11:55 to play. Ashlock finished with eight receptions for 113 yards and touchdowns of 18, 7 and 31 yards. Jackson Harris had 117 yards receiving on seven catches and Landon Sims had 10 carries for 82 yards and a TD.

Bryson Barnes threw a 32-yard touchdown to Broc Lane that gave Utah State (3-3, 1-1) a 26-24 lead 59 seconds into the second half before the Rainbow Warriors scored the final 20 points. The Aggies had won eight straight- by an average of 26.4 points - against Hawaii. Kansei Matsuzawa made field goals of 46 and 36 yards in the second half. Hawaii's Nick Cenacle, a preseason all-Mountain West Conference selection who returned from a four-game absence (knee), had six receptions for 57 yards.   Utah Football   Devin Dampier ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns as Utah ran over No. 21 Arizona State 42-10 on Saturday night. Dampier, who has battled lower leg injuries this season, looked fresh after Utah's bye week and became the first Utes QB to rush for more than 100 yards since Travis Wilson against Oregon in 2015. "(The offensive line) gave me great space to make plays," Dampier said. "I felt my best for sure."

Severe thunderstorms soaked the field but didn't slow down Dampier, who avoided tacklers on just 10 carries. "You saw some of the moves he made tonight. He just wasn't capable of making those moves last few weeks," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We're elated he's back to 100 percent." Dampier ran twice for touchdowns in the first half, from 12 yards and from 24 yards out, and then added a 9-yard score in the third quarter. Dampier was 7 for 12 for 104 yards passing as Utah (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) rarely felt the need to throw the ball. Arizona State starting QB Sam Leavitt missed the game with a right foot injury. Sixth-year senior Jeff Sims - one of the most experienced backups in the country with starts at Georgia Tech, Nebraska and ASU - was 18 for 38 for 124 yards passing. - AP College Football

Colton Boomer kicked a short field goal and Gaines scored on a 2-yard run on the final play of the first quarter to give Boise State (4-2, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) a 10-0 lead. Damon Bankston returned the kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to begin the second quarter and New Mexico (3-3, 0-2) pulled within three points. Jack Layne had a 1-yard touchdown toss to Dorian Thomas with 10:30 left and the Lobos moved in front 14-10. Madsen answered with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ben Ford and the Broncos took a 17-14 lead into halftime.

BYU Football   Freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier ran for a 7-yard touchdown in the second overtime, BYU's defense stopped Arizona on the ensuing drive and the 18th-ranked Cougars stayed undefeated with a 33-27 win over the Wildcats on Saturday night. Bachmeier's run up the middle gave BYU a 33-27 lead, but the 2-point conversion attempt was deflected and fell incomplete. Arizona had a chance to tie the game, but Noah Fifita's fourth-down pass bounced off the hands of Javin Whatley, who was trying to make a tough catch in the end zone. "There's no better feeling than winning, especially winning in double overtime on the road against a really good team," BYU receiver Parker Kingston said. "It was awesome." BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has won its first six games for a second straight season and seventh time in program history.

Arizona (4-2, 1-2) has dropped two of its past three games. BYU fought back from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 24 with 19 seconds left in regulation when Bachmeier ran for a 2-yard touchdown. Kedrick Reescano gave Arizona a 24-14 lead with 11:14 left in the game after a powerful 36-yard touchdown run that went right through the middle of the BYU defense. The 214-pound back met resistance at the line of scrimmage, but broke through a few tackles and dashed toward the end zone. BYU's LJ Martin ran for a career-high 162 yards and a score. Linebacker Siale Esera finished with a team-high 16 tackles. Bachmeier threw for 172 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while also running for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. - BYU/AP College Football
