Indiana Football   Curt Cignetti's new deal shows Indiana isn't content with being known as just a basketball school. Indiana announced a new eight-year contract with its football coach worth at least $92.8 million on Thursday, rewarding him for pushing the Hoosiers into national championship contention in just two seasons. The school said the average annual compensation for Cignetti will be approximately $11.6 million - a massive amount in a world of programs navigating financial challenges in the world of name, image and likeness. The deal runs through Nov. 30, 2033 "At Indiana University, we are committed to performing at the highest levels in everything we do, and no one has exemplified that more than Coach Cignetti," Indiana University President Pamela Whitten said. "Put simply, Cig is a winner." The Hoosiers might have been trying to get ahead of possible suitors.

Penn State, UCLA, Arkansas and Oklahoma State are among the schools that have already fired their coaches this season. Cignetti talked big when he arrived, and he has backed it up. He is 17-2 since arriving from James Madison, with his only losses coming last year against Ohio State and Notre Dame teams that ended up in the College Football Playoff championship game. He led the Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff for the first time and was rewarded by being named AP Coach of the Year last season. Cignetti's biggest win yet came last week, when the seventh-ranked Hoosiers won 30-20 at No. 3 Oregon on Saturday. It ended the FBS' longest regular-season win streak at 23 games and Oregon's 18-game home winning streak. It was Indiana's first victory against a top-five team since 1967. Now, the Hoosiers (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) have a No. 3 national ranking - the highest in program history. Cignetti chose not to make too big a deal about the victory. - AP College Football

Texas Football   The breakout season by North Carolina State running back Hollywood Smothers helped him earn a midseason honor from The Associated Press. Smothers, the Atlantic Coast Conference's leading rusher, was voted the league's most surprising player so far this season, according to the AP honors released Wednesday. N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said he expected success this season for Smothers, a sophomore from Charlotte who rushed for 571 yards in 2024. Smothers ranks third in the nation with 739 rushing yards, the ACC's top total. He also leads the conference with 105.6 rushing yards per game. "I knew last season as the season wore on how explosive he was and that if he were to have the offseason we needed him to have and he would sustain his health that he would be what he is, what you are watching," Doeren said earlier this month. - AP College Football

Tennessee Football   Joey Aguilar stayed on the ground after a long run and the Tennessee fans held their breath until he sat up. Then they started chanting "Joey! Joey!" The quarterback who came through the transfer portal from Appalachian State via a short detour to UCLA has been everything they could have wanted. Aguilar quickly picked up the offense, which is humming at coach Josh Heupel's up-tempo pace as the No. 11 Vols go into Saturday's showdown at sixth-ranked Alabama. Heupel, who won a national title and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy playing quarterback for Oklahoma in 2000, said Wednesday that Aguilar came in humble and ready to compete and worked to earn the trust of his new teammates after arriving in mid-May. Aguilar's experience helped. "He's handled it at a really high level," Heupel said. "Certainly, a lot more comfortable than when we first started." Heupel likes Aguilar's work ethic, aggressiveness and how the quarterback remains even-keeled from series to series.

"What I love about him, whether it's a good play, bad play, good series, bad series - same demeanor coming off on the sideline," Heupel said. Aguilar threw for 221 yards and a touchdown and ran for 59 yards in last week's 34-31 win over Arkansas. But it was the way he ran that had Heupel and more than 100,000 fans on the edge of their seats. On one run, Aguilar crashed into the communication system on the Razorbacks' sideline, cutting off headset communications for the rest of the game. Late in the game, Aguilar finished a 28-yard sprint up the middle of the field and came down with the football stuck in his midsection. "That ball was deep in my stomach," said Aguilar, who was able to smile recalling the moment an hour later. "That took the air out of me, for sure." Heupel appreciated the run to help seal the win: "I want him to get down once the play is over." Aguilar is off to a strong start. He has completed 64.8% of his passes (118 of 182) for 1,680 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has been intercepted five times, an area of concern coming into the season after he was picked off 14 times last season. He also has run for 117 yards and two more scores. He ranks 12th in the country averaging 280 yards passing per game, just ahead of Alabama's Ty Simpson (279.67). Tennessee also leads the nation in scoring with 48.2 points a game. - AP College Football

Texas Tech Football   In its third season in the Big 12, Cincinnati has the look of a Power Five program on and off the field. The No. 24 Bearcats are on a five-game winning streak and ranked in the AP Top 25 for the first time in nearly three years. Besides the 5-1 record, they are tied with No. 7 Texas Tech and 15th-ranked BYU atop the conference at 3-0. "I think we've played well all year. The key was bringing back the core nucleus of our team last year and adding a few pieces. It's been a good gel, good mesh. The challenge is to keep doing that," coach Scott Satterfield said in his office overlooking the field at the Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility and Performance Center. The football program moved into the $134 million building in June.

It has been a steady climb for Cincinnati, which was the first non-Power Five team to make the College Football Playoff in 2021. Before this week, the last time the Bearcats were ranked was when it was No. 21 on Nov. 20, 2022. The Bearcats joined the Big 12 in 2023 and went 3-9 and 1-8 in conference play. They started 5-2 last season before ending the year on a five-game losing streak. A win at Oklahoma State Saturday night would not surpass UC's conference wins from last year; it would make them bowl eligible for the first time since 2022. Rebuilding jobs have become Satterfield's forte. He helped guide Appalachian State from the Football Championship Subdivision to FBS and then went to Louisville after struggles in the Atlantic Coast Conference. - AP College Football

The last road victory for FIU came on Oct. 18, 2023. The Panthers also ended a five-game losing streak in the series against WKU, with their first victory since 2018. Keyone Jenkins passed for 184 yards and a touchdown for FIU (3-3, 1-1 Conference USA). Alex Perry caught three passes for 86 yards.

Maverick McIvor threw three interceptions for WKU (5-2, 3-1) after entering with just two on the season. He was 20 of 31 for 159 yards. Marvis Parrish rushed for 74 yards.   Iowa State Football   Clune Van Andel made a 38-yard field goal as time expired to give Arkansas State a 15-14 victory over South Alabama on Tuesday night. Arkansas State trailed 14-3 entering the fourth quarter. A 14-play, 56-yard drive ended in a 37-yard field goal by Van Andel to make it 14-6. After forcing a three-and-out, Jaylen Raynor ran 42 yards and then found Hunter Summers for a 6-yard touchdown to get within 14-12 with 7:51 left. After South Alabama kicker Hamilton DiBoyan missed a 29-yard field goal with 1:50 remaining, Arkansas State went 60 yards in 10 plays to set up Van Andel's game-winner.

Raynor was 29-of-45 passing for 209 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Arkansas State (3-4, 2-1 Sun Belt), which was coming off a 31-30 win over Texas State. He also carried it 14 times for 76 yards. Kentrel Bullock rushed for 72 yards and a touchdown for South Alabama (1-6, 0-3), which has lost six straight following an opening win over Morgan State.
