He had a 37-yard return into Hampton territory to set up the MEAC squad's first TD, scored on a 76-yard return midway through the second quarter to provide the lead for good, and added a 57-yard TD return in the fourth. SEPT 21 WEEK 3 ASSOCIATED PRESS NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK RUNNER-UP: Louisville RB Keyjuan Brown ran 10 times for a career-high 163 yards and a pair of long touchdowns in the Cardinals' 41-31 victory over SMU. He scored on a 58-yard run in the third quarter, and his 53-yarder early in the fourth quarter gave the Cardinals the lead for good. Brown is the third player in Louisville history to rush for at least 160 yards on 10 or fewer carries, following Lenny Lyles (twice in 1957) and Malik Williams (2017). - AP College Football

He has completed 89.9% of his attempts (71 of 79) and is ahead of pace to break the Bowl Subdivision season record of 77.4% by Oregon's Bo Nix in 2023. 09/18/26 - QB Mason Heintschel, So/2029, Pittsburgh + More +

Damon Ferguson Jr., La'Vell Wright and Mason Heintschel ran for touchdowns, and Pittsburgh continued its perfect start with a 27-13 win over Syracuse on Thursday night. The Panthers (3-0, 1-0 ACC) piled up 245 yards rushing against the Orange (1-2, 0-1) to make Pat Narduzzi a winner in his school-record 144th game as head coach. Pitt's running game had struggled a bit coming in, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry. The Panthers nearly doubled that total in its conference opener. Ferguson finished with 102 yards on the ground, including a 32-yard sprint to the end zone early in the second quarter that gave Pitt a 14-point lead.

Syracuse kept Heintschel under wraps as a passer. The sophomore completed just 10 of 23 for 123 yards but made up for it with his legs. Heintschel ran for 41 yards, the highlight coming on a 9-yard touchdown scramble in the third quarter that featured a pretty juke past diving Orange linebacker Gary Bryant III. He capped the win with a spin move on third-and-9 that produced a 10-yard gain and a first down that allowed the Panthers to drain the rest of the clock. Syracuse began the night as the most penalized team in the country and was flagged nine times for 90 yards, including a sequence in the second quarter in which the Orange were called for pass interference on third down, leading head coach Fran Brown to get called for unsportsmanlike conduct when he protested. Two plays later, Ferguson bounced outside and down the sideline to the end zone to give the Panthers control. Steve Angeli had for 167 yards passing for Syracuse before being benched in favor of Amari Odom in the fourth quarter after throwing interceptions on back-to-back drives to thwart any chance of a rally. Odom was 7 for 7 against a Pitt defense protecting a three-score lead. - AP College Football

LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt was upgraded to "questionable" Thursday night on the Southeastern Conference injury report after initially being listed as "doubtful" for Saturday's game at Mississippi. The change increases the probability that Leavitt will be under center when No. 7 LSU visits No. 8 Mississippi on Saturday night in a game that is the focus of the college football world because of Tigers coach Lane Kiffin's return to the place where he coached the previous six seasons. Leavitt's initial listing came four days after a 45-14 victory over Louisiana Tech, from which the dual-threat Arizona State transfer emerged without an apparent injury. Kiffin also did not mention Leavitt's health during his regularly scheduled press conference on Monday.

But Leavitt, who has run for five touchdowns and passed for two scores in two games with the Tigers (2-0), did not practice Wednesday because of a "physical issue," a person familiar with the situation said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Thursday because the Tigers' practice was not open to media. When Kiffin was coaching Ole Miss in 2024, he had as many as 26 players on an injury report before a game against Georgia. Many of the players on the report wound up in the lineup for a 28-10 victory over the then-No. 2 Bulldogs. Kiffin has since gained a reputation for using injury reports to practice gamesmanship, listing any player with an ailment on the report in order to leave upcoming opponents uncertain about which players they should prepare to play. - AP College Football

09/14 WEEK 2 NEC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jack O'Connell, Stonehill, Quarterback, Fifth Year, 6-2, 190 lbs., North Andover, MA/North Andover, Last Week's Stats: 27-44 completions, 380 passing yards, 4 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions, 17 rushes, 53 rushing yards,...O'Connell balled out in Stonehill's hard-fought, 42-35 defeat at New Hampshire on Saturday and as a result, he became the first NEC player to run it back as the NEC/Atlantic Tomorrow's Office Offensive Player of the Week since former Skyhawk and running back Jermaine Corbett turned the trick in consecutive weeks back in 2023. The veteran threw for a career-best 380 yards, the sixth-most by an FCS signal caller in a game this season, while adding four touchdown throws to keep Stonehill within arms' reach of the Wildcats. Also tacking on 53 rushing yards on 17 carries, O'Connell contributed to a Skyhawks' offense that put up the second-most total yardage (514) in a game since the program made the jump to Division I for the 2022 campaign. In addition, his passing yard performance was the best by a Stonehill quarterback since Anton Stoneking had 337 against Bentley during the program's Division II era in 2019.
