Mississippi State Football   Mississippi State scored 28 points in the first half and started the Jeff Lebby era with a blowout win, 56-7 over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. All three phases scored for the Bulldogs with touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams. Quarterback Blake Shapen debuted the new offense with a 15 of 20 showing as the Baylor transfer found the end zone three times through the air and had 247 yards. On the ground, Shapen led the team with seven carries for 44 yards and a rushing score.

The Bulldogs (1-0) had four wide receivers score touchdowns as Jordan Mosely had five catches for 104 yards and a touchdown and Kevin Coleman had five catches for 88 yards and a score. Coleman also had five punt returns for 117 yards. MSU scored touchdowns on its first two possessions before a rain storm dampened the progress. The Bulldogs were back in the end zone in the second quarter on a Creed Whittemore 41-yard end around and then back-to-back touchdown passes to Coleman from 23 yards away and freshman Mario Craver for 54 yards. Special teams got in on the mix with a blocked punt from JP Purvis-recovered by Craver-and another true freshman in defensive back Elijah Cannon had a 51-yard pick-6. - AP College Football

Tennessee State Football   Draylen Ellis threw for three touchdowns and Tennessee State used a three-touchdown opening quarter to cruise to a 41-21 win over Mississippi Valley State in a season opener on Saturday. On the Tigers' third possession, Ellis threw a 1-yard score to Jordan Gant to end a six-play, 77-yard drive. The scoring opportunity was set up when Ellis connected with Dean for 72 yards.

Oklahoma Football   The California Golden Bears shook off a rusty start to open their inaugural ACC season with 31-13 win over UC Davis on Saturday, their 12th straight win over the Aggies to remain undefeated in 34 starts against the Big-Sky Conference. The Bears found their stride late in the game after a slow and messy start. Aggies new coach Tim Plough's offensive scheme was innovative enough to make the game competitive through the third quarter. Bears quarterback Fernando Mendoza earned the start over Chandler Rogers after a contentious fall camp and threw for 158 yards and a touchdown, completing 15 of 22 attempts.

Running in shotgun formation without a huddle, Mendoza looked uncomfortable under center. Meanwhile Jadyn Ott, who averaged 92.2 rushing yards per game last season, was stifled with only six carries and 11 yards in the first two quarters. Cal was forced to punt three times. Ott finished the game with 49 rushing yards and two touchdowns but was sidelined with a late injury. The Aggies put up 14 points behind a fumble recovery by Porter Connors and a one-yard rushing touchdown from Lan Larison. - AP College Football

South Carolina freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers ran for a 4-yard touchdown with 6:11 to go to finally push the Gamecocks (1-0) past the Monarchs (0-1), picked to finish sixth in the seven-team Sun Belt Conference East Division. Sellers did not have a stellar debut. He completed just 10 of 23 passes for 114 yards and carried the ball 22 times for 68 yards. Old Dominion quarterback Grant Wilson struggled too. He had both fumbles deep in his own territory, threw a second quarter interception in the end zone and ended the Monarchs last chance with another interception with 1:29 left in the game. - AP College Football

Texas Football   Arch Manning threw his first career touchdown pass and ran for his first score in mop-up duty in No. 4 Texas' 52-0 victory over Colorado State on Saturday in the season opener. The five-star recruit with the NFL family pedigree might be the highest- profile backup quarterback in the country as he waits behind starter Quinn Ewers. And while Manning, still a freshman after playing briefly last season, might not be a threat to unseat Ewers, every step on the field is met with robust cheers from Longhorns fans. Manning, the son of Cooper Manning, is the grandson of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, and the nephew of Super Bowl-winning QBs Peyton and Eli Manning.

Texas led 38-0 in the third quarter when Manning entered the game. His first play was a 40-yard completion to Johntay Cook II. His second pass was a 5-yard TD strike to Silas Bolden. On the play, Manning scrambled to avoid a pass rush, then looked ready to bolt for the end zone before shoveling the pass to Bolden. His 1-yard touchdown run with 10 minutes left was Texas' final score. Manning's readiness to play significant minutes this season could be key in Texas' first season in the Southeastern Conference. Ewers has missed multiple games each of the previous two seasons with injuries. - AP College Football

Boise State Football   Ashton Jeanty ran for a school-record six touchdowns and Boise State overcame Georgia Southern 56-45 on Saturday in a season opener. Spencer Danielson, who coached the Broncos' final four games last season and went 3-1, picked up his first win without the interim tag. Jeanty ran for 267 yards on 20 carries, the third-best rushing yardage total in school history and the most by a Bronco since 1998. He gave Boise State its first points with a 77-yard score and finished his day with a 75-yarder that gave the Broncos a 42-37 lead 13 seconds after the Eagles had gone on top with 13 1/2 minutes left in the game.

Freshman Sire Gaines cemented the outcome with a 38-yard touchdown run and a 17-yard scoring reception. The seven rushing touchdowns were one short of the school record and the most since 2007. Boise State's Maddux Madsen was 22-of-31 passing for 280 yards with a TD and an interception. Georgia Southern's JC French was 28-of-50 passing for 323 yards and two scores and added a rushing TD. Boise State led 28-9 with 2 1/2 minutes left in the first half before the Eagles scored the next 21 points.   Ohio State Football   Freshman Jeremiah Smith caught two touchdown passes and No. 2 Ohio State overcame a sluggish start to bury Akron 52-6 in the opener for both teams Saturday. Under new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, the Buckeyes needed nearly all of the first half to start running smoothly against the overmatched Zips. Smith dropped the first pass thrown to him on the opening drive. The Buckeyes punted, leading to an Akron field goal. Smith redeemed himself, however, turning around to make a slick catch in the end zone of a 16-yard pass from Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard for a touchdown.

Late in the first half, the much-hyped receiver from South Florida caught a 9-yard pass in the end zone with cornerback Devonte Golden-Nelson draped all over him. That put the Buckeyes up 17-3 at the half. A 45-yard contested catch in the third quarter set up a 2-yard scoring run by Quinshon Judkins, the first as a Buckeye for the Ole Miss transfer. Howard finished 17 for 28 for 228 yards and three TDs. The Zips got field goals of 48 and 49 yards by Garrison Smith. - AP College Football

Syracuse Football   Kyle McCord threw for a career-high 354 yards and four touchdowns, Trebor Pena tallied three scores, and Syracuse rebounded from a sluggish start to down Ohio 38-22 Saturday as the Fran Brown era got off to a successful start. The Bobcats dominated the heavily favored Orange in the first quarter, accumulating 109 yards of total offense to Syracuse’s nine, and held the ball for 13:51. But Syracuse, trailing 6-0 on two Gianni Spetic first-quarter field goals, came alive in the second quarter behind McCord, a transfer from Ohio State making his Syracuse debut.

McCord connected on a 28-yard scoring play down the left side to pre-season All-ACC pick Oronde Gadsden II, making his first start since a season-ending Lisfranc injury a year ago. With just five seconds to go in the half, McCord found Pena on a 20-yard strike, giving Syracuse a 17-9 lead at the half. The Orange lengthened their lead in the third on a one-handed 5-yard touchdown grab by LeQuint Allen and a 14-yard score to Pena. The game marked the head coaching debut for Brown, a former defensive backs coach at Georgia, who was hired in December replacing Dino Babers. - AP College Football
