After starring at Highland Park High School and then transferring from Oklahoma, Morris was the backup before starting two games late in the season when Duggan was hurt. Morris flashed major upside, throwing for 461 yards and accounting for 531 yards total offense in a 30-28 upset of Baylor. Dykes said the two quarterbacks should have a decent idea of where they stand based on the practice reps this spring. He's not ready to anoint a starter just yet. "For us, the quicker we can get it figured out, the better because we can tailor the offense to fit their skill set," Dykes said. "We're just not quite there yet." Dykes admitted that he's always been a believer in the coaching axiom that if you have two starting quarterbacks, you don't have any.

He also knows things can change quickly. When he was head coach at Cal, future NFL first-round pick Jared Goff went from fourth-string to a starter in his freshman season. The spring game is another chance, Dykes said, for his quarterbacks to make an impression going into summer, a valuable opportunity to take the next step. "That's the biggest thing that you want at that position, you want consistency," Dykes said. "You've got to have a guy who can go out and execute your offense at a high level game in, game out. It doesn't have to be the biggest, it doesn't have to be the strongest, doesn't have to have the biggest arm. - Dallas Morning News
