Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst is determined to avoid overworking several key players who are returning to the practice field this week in camp. "We've got to be smart on volume initially," he said. Perhaps the No. 1 player to monitor is tailback Chez Mellu si, who suffered a torn anterior ligament in his left knee last season at Rutgers. "You'd be crazy to have Chez just go 100 miles an hour right away," Chryst said.UW is scheduled to hold its first practice Wednesday and the workload of Mellusi and fellow tailback Isaac Guerendo will be worth monitoring. "I feel great," Mellusi said Tuesday during the team's annual media day. "I'm full-go. I'm not limited. "We're going to see how it progresses throughout camp. They're going to watch my load. But I 'm in a good spot and I'm just excited to play football." Guerendo sounded the same optimistic chord. "I'm full-go, 100 percent for Day 1," he said. "The mentality I have built is whatever opportunities I get, just take advantage of those. If anybody kno ws, it is me, that opportunities can be taken away like that." Mellusi broke the 100-yard mark in four of the nine games he played last season and finished with 815 yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry, and five touchdowns. - Journal Sentinel

"A guy I'm extremely proud of is Aaron Faumui," Virginia coach Tony Elliott said. "He's a guy I challenged right out of the gate, because I know he's an alpha dog. Right? And I needed to challenge him." On Wednesday following the Cavaliers' first practic e of training camp, the senior defensive lineman said he's never felt a responsibility on the field and within the locker room like the one he holds now. "Oh man," Faumui said. "Me and Coach Elliott had a lot of one-on-one talks, but most of it was him t elling me I could take the role of being a leader, do right and not just on the field, but do right in class, get the boys together and all of that. So, he challenged me this year and I feel like I've been doing good." The 6-foot-1, 282-pound native of H awaii hasn't had to lead previously for the Cavaliers, but is now a trusted veteran on their defensive line. He's the only senior in the position group to have spent his entire career with the Hoos. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

2022 PRESEASON WALTER PAYTON AWARD WATCH LIST: RB Ailym Ford, Chattanooga, Jr., 5-9, 213,...Ford is already honored first with preseason all-conference and later All-America consideration. He enters the campaign with 2,244 yards and 20 touchdowns looking to become the only Moc with three 1,000-yard campaigns ahead of the trio of Eldra Buckley (2005, 2006), Jacob Huesman (2014, 2015) and Derrick Craine (2015, 2016). "Ailym has an incredible impact on our program," Coach Rusty Wright stated. "It's not jus t on the field, which is obvious and why he's under this consideration in the first place. He's in this position because of what he does off the field. "He is an elite worker be it on the practice or the weight room or the classroom. Ailym has a chance t o make his mark as the best running back in Chattanooga history." He rushed for 1,071 yards on 203 carries with 11 touchdowns in 2021 sharing totes with Tyrell Price (133-853-9). - Chattanooga Football

Brant Kuithe is listed as a tight end, and has been an All-Pac-12 selection at the position three times - most recently in 2021 before opting to return this fall as a senior. That said, anyone watching Kuithe the last few years knows that pigeonholing hi m as a tight end isn't really fair given his versatility, a notion Whittingham is on board with. "He's a hybrid, he'll be all over the place," Whittingham said. "To say he is strictly a tight end is a false statement. He's going to be in a lot of differe nt situations, a lot of different locations for us." Kuithe is coming off 50 catches for 611 yards and six touchdowns, not all of it coming at tight end. He can line up out of the slot, he can catch the ball out of the backfield. More than a couple of ti mes, Utah went to Kuithe on a jet sweep. Kuithe is the most dangerous, most versatile weapon Cam Rising has at his disposal this season. - Salt Lake Tribune

Virginia Tech tight end Nick Gallo has 25 career catches for 213 yards with a touchdown. Those are pretty modest numbers for a player that's played in 35 career games with 15 starts. Here's a prediction for 2022 - he surprises the numbers in all three ca tegories this fall. Gallo earned the trust of the new coaching staff right out of the gate, and ended up being named the most improved award for the offense at the end of spring camp. Bowen labeled Gallo as more of an 'F' tight end, a designation for the a tight end that typically moves around from playing in the slot, to the backfield and even gets opportunities to line up on the outside. Or as Bowen describes it someone who, " a move, off the ball, flex out" guy while Drake Deiuliis will be counted on to be more of the inline blocking guy. That along with Tech's inexperience at receiver should put Gallo in position to be one of the offense's more productive players. - Roanoke Times

With Elliott at the helm and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings in place, the Cavaliers are seeking to better their balance on offense, which means a likely increased commitment to the run game is coming. They have better depth than they did this pa st spring, so UVa could potentially deploy a rotation at the position. But there's also the thought that one rusher could emerge as a standout, and according to running backs coach Keith Gaither, junior Mike Hollins possesses the skill set."I thin k Mike could be an every-down back," Gaither said. "It just depends if he continues to take the next step in his game. He's a good back now, but we need him to take his game from good to great, but the only way to do it is great practice habits. He hasn' t learned that yet. He will, but he has the ability to be the every-down back if he buys in and truly immerses himself in this offense and in every aspect of becoming the best player he can be." Hollins, a Baton Rouge, La. native, averaged 4.3 yards per carry and scored two rushing touchdowns a season ago in a limited role. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
