Caleb Hawkins' third touchdown of the game ensured North Texas' 36-22 win over South Alabama on Saturday. The Mean Green are 5-0 on the field for the first time since 1959. That's not including 1977 when North Texas began 5-0 but only after a season-opening loss to Mississippi State was later forfeited by the Bulldogs. Hawkins had 140 yards rushing on 16 carries with two scores and 78 yards receiving with a touchdown. Hawkins has seven touchdowns in two weeks after scoring four times in a 45-38 overtime win over Army last week.

His final score was a 27-yard run with two minutes remaining during which he broke multiple tackles. That came after the Jaguars (1-4) closed to within six when Kentrel Bullock scored on a 2-yard run to cap an 10-play, 87-yard drive with 6:11 remaining. Hawkins scored on a 6-yard run to give North Texas a 14-7 halftime lead then took a screen pass 68 yards early in the third quarter for a score. Drew Mestemaker was 14-of-26 passing for 234 yards and a score for the Mean Green and also ran for a touchdown. Miles Coleman also ran for a TD. Bishop Davenport was 17-of-34 passing for 195 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Jaguars. He also ran for a score. Devin Voisin had 97 yards receiving on five catches and Rod Gibbs also had a TD catch for South Alabama, which has lost four straight. - North Texas/AP College Football

  09/27/25 - QB Sam LeavittrSo/2028, LSU + More +

Jesus Gomez kicked a 23-yard field goal with 1:14 left and Arizona State overcame a 17-point deficit to beat No. 24 TCU 27-24 on Friday night. The Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) were down 17-0 in the second quarter before rallying behind Sam Leavitt and Jordyn Tyson to pull out a second straight late win. "Every close of the game, it's incredible our guys find ways to get it done in the big moments," Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham said. "It's a testament to the character of the guys were have on our team." Leavitt threw his second touchdown pass to Tyson, from 4 yards with 1:50 left in regulation, and Prince Dorbuh followed with a strip sack of TCU's Josh Hoover, setting up Arizona State at TCU's 15. Gomez, who missed two earlier field goals, split the uprights after the Sun Devils originally lined up to go for it on fourth-and-inches. Gomez also hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired in Arizona State's 27-24 victory over Baylor last week. Arizona State's Martell Hughes sealed it with the second interception of Hoover.

Leavitt threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns on 26-of-38 passing, connecting with Tyson eight times for 126 yards. Raleek Brown ran for 147 yards. "Down 17-0, things just weren't going our way," Leavitt said. "We're a really tough team and we just compete." TCU (3-1, 0-1) had its chances. The Horned Frogs let the early lead slip away, but went up 24-17 on Hoover's 1-yard sneak early in the fourth quarter and stopped Arizona State twice from inside their own 5. TCU couldn't pull it off, plagued by three turnovers, six sacks and an anemic rushing game that produced 10 yards on 25 carries. "We just kept shooting ourselves in the foot," TCU coach Sonny Dykes said. Heavy afternoon storms soaked the field and strong wind lingered well past kickoff. It did little to slow down the Horned Frogs early. TCU took advantage of a short field for Trent Battle's 13-yard touchdown run and Jeremy Payne scored on a 7-yard run. The Horned Frogs then stopped a fourth-and-2 to force a turnover on downs at Arizona State's 38, leading to a field goal that put them up 17-0. Leavitt and Tyson sparked the Sun Devils. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Auburn receiver Horatio Fields, who ranks third on the team with 12 receptions for 106 yards a touchdown this season, is sidelined indefinitely with a broken foot. Coach Hugh Freeze said the 6-foot-2 senior was injured in practice Tuesday. Fields transferred to Auburn this year after four years at Wake Forest. "Kind of the leader of that receiver room who knew every position and gave us flexibility to do a lot of things," Freeze said during the Southeastern Conference coaches conference call Wednesday. "And it's a difficult loss." Freeze said sophomore Perry Thompson is the next man up and will get a chance to fill Fields' role when the Tigers (3-1, 0-1 SEC) play at No. 9 Texas A&M (3-0, 0-0) on Saturday. "It's his time to show he's ready and to earn it, and obviously we're getting Sam (Turner) prepared, too, to help," Freeze said. "Perry has the potential and talent to do really good things. "He's got to learn to do them consistently, over and over again, and with technique. He shows flashes of that. Now we just need it to be more consistent, but he'll be the first one to get that opportunity." - AP College Football

Alabama linebacker Jah-Marien Latham was being evaluated at a hospital after a neck injury suffered in practice, coach Kalen DeBoer said Tuesday. Latham, a sixth-year senior, was hurt Tuesday. DeBoer said he was taken to a hospital in Birmingham but has "full feeling and motion." "He is currently undergoing a thorough medical assessment to determine the next steps in his recovery," DeBoer said. "Our top priority is Jah's health and well-being. We are in close contact with his family and the medical team and will continue to support him in every way possible. Further updates will be provided as appropriate." Latham played but left with a lower-body injury during the season-opening loss at Florida State. He has not played the past two games ahead of the No. 17 Crimson Tide's game at No. 5 Georgia on Saturday night. - AP College Football

No. 23 Illinois will have to play most of the season without star cornerback Xavier Scott, coach Bret Bielema said Monday. Scott will undergo a procedure on Wednesday for the injury that caused him to miss a 63-10 loss at No. 11 Indiana last weekend, Bielema said. Multiple reports have indicated Scott's injury is to his lower leg. "He will be out the majority of the rest of the year, but there's a chance he could come back at the end," Bielema said. Scott earned first-team Associated Press all-Big Ten honors last season. He finished as one of 15 finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award. He intercepted four passes in 2024 and two in 2023. Scott's injury complicates Illinois' hopes of bouncing back from its blowout loss to Indiana as the Ilini (3-1, 0-1 Big Ten) prepare to host No. 21 Southern California (4-0, 2-0) on Saturday. USC quarterback Jayden Maiava leads all Bowl Subdivision players in passer rating and has thrown nine touchdown passes without an interception. - AP College Football

Syracuse quarterback Steve Angeli will miss the remainder of the season with a torn left Achilles tendon, coach Fran Brown announced Monday, two days after the junior led the Orange to their most impressive win of the season. Angeli was scheduled to have surgery later in the day. Brown hoped the 21-year-old will recover in time for spring sessions. "A really good football player, a great person, just sad for him," Brown said of the Notre Dame transfer. "It's been a nice little journey with him for the time that we've had him to play, and I'm excited about the time when he comes back." Angeli was hurt on a noncontact play while rolling out of the pocket in the third quarter of a 34-21 win at Clemson. He finished 18 of 31 for 244 yards with two touchdowns before leaving the game with Syracuse leading 27-14.

The injury leaves Syracuse (3-1, 1-0 ACC) turning to Rickie Collins to take over as the Orange prepare to host Duke (2-2, 1-0) on Saturday. "(Collins) was able to command the offense," Brown said of Collins' relief appearance against Clemson. "It just shows that you have to continue to have faith and work hard and things may fall your way." Collins was initially projected to be the Orange's starter after transferring to Syracuse this offseason following two years as a backup at LSU. Collins, however, was beaten out for the starting job by Angeli, who joined the program after spring practices. "It wasn't a huge difference of why we picked a guy," Brown said of the quarterback competition. "It took me some time to pick the quarterback, so I'm very thankful we had two." Brown said Angeli and Collins have developed a tight relationship and watch film together regularly. "No one deserves the opportunity more than (Collins) does," Brown said. "Just his mental toughness of understanding the fronts and everything of that nature. He already has a huge arm. He can make every throw." - AP College Football

Steve Angeli threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns before leaving with a lower leg injury, Justus Ross-Simmons hauled in two TD passes and Syracuse upset heavily-favored Clemson 34-21 on Saturday sending the Tigers to their worst start ever under coach Dabo Swinney. Angeli threw first half TD passes to Ross-Simmons and Darrell Gill Jr. while Will Nixon scored on a 9-yard run as the Orange (3-1, 1-0 ACC) built a 27-14 lead before Angeli left with a non-contact lower leg injury late in the third quarter after rolling out of the pocket. Rickie Collins added a touchdown pass in relief for Syracuse, which entered the game as a 17 1/2-point road underdog but never trailed. First-team preseason All-American Cade Klubnik struggled with accuracy and finding open receivers once again despite finishing 37 of 60 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns for Clemson, which started 1-3 for the first time since 2004 when Swinney was the Tigers wide receivers coach under Tommy Bowden. Adam Randall added 130 yards rushing and a touchdown and Bryant Wesco Jr. had two TD catches for the Tigers (1-3, 0-2), who began the season ranked No. 4 in the nation but have seen their national championship hopes evaporate in the first four weeks of the season. Syracuse took full advantage of two first-half gambles by coach Fran Brown and three costly Clemson penalties to build a 24-14 halftime lead.

After Angeli completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to a leaping Ross-Simmons on the game's first possession, Brown caught Clemson off guard with an onside kick and Syracuse recovered. Brown then gambled again going for it on fourth and 3 near midfield and succeeded again, leading to a field goal giving the Orange a 10-0 lead before Clemson's offense stepped on the field. Klubnik threw TDs to Wesco and Randall in the first half, but Syracuse matched the Tigers offensive output with Nixon scoring on a 9-yard run off an inside handoff and Angeli finding Gill in the right corner of the end zone on a perfectly-placed pass for a 22-yard score. Clemson had a chance to cut the lead to seven before halftime but Wesco dropped a pass near the sideline with 5 seconds left that would have allowed the Tigers to get into field goal range. Instead Klubnik's Hail Mary heave to end the half was incomplete. Johntay Cook II had five catches for 113 yards and Yasin Willis added 94 yards on the ground for Syracuse. Halftime lasted more than two hours due to a lightning delay. - Syracuse/AP College Football

Backup quarterback Will Hammond stepped into a stagnant Texas Tech offense in the third quarter and put together four scoring drives to lead the 17th-ranked Red Raiders to a 34-10 win over No. 16 Utah on Saturday. Hammond threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 61 yards. He entered the game in relief of Behren Morton, whose helmet slammed on the turf after he slid head first into contact with Utah linebacker Johnathan Hall during the Red Raiders' (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) opening drive of the third quarter. Morton was ruled out after the hit with his teaming leading 10-3. He threw for 142 yards and two interceptions before exiting. Utah QB Devon Dampier threw for 162 yards and two interceptions. The Utes (3-1, 0-1 Big 12) were held to 263 total yards and committed four turnovers.

Texas Tech opened the scoring early in the first quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run from Cameron Dickey, who finished the day with 67 yards and two scores. Stone Harrington's career-long 58-yard field goal extended the Red Raiders' lead to 10-0 late in the second quarter. The Utes had a 69-yard TD pass from Dampier to Jackson Bennee called back on an ineligible receiver penalty. Their first-half points came from Dillon Curtis' 32-yard field goal on the final play of the half. Dickey put the Red Raiders up 27-10 with 3:41 remaining in the fourth quarter when he took a hand off, squeezed his way through a scrum of players and popped out the other side for a 24-yard touchdown run. Utah threw an interception on its ensuing drive, which led to another Tech touchdown. The home fans had already started leaving the stadium by the time Hammond threw a spot-on ball to Reggie Virgil for the 21-yard score. - AP College Football

K'Vion Thunderbird returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and Fresno State beat Hawaii 23-21 on Saturday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. Thunderbird, a sophomore linebacker, lined up over the right guard and started to rush before he took a short drop, snagging a pick-6 that made it 23-15 with 5:20 left in the game. Fresno State (4-1) has won four straight since a season-opening loss at Kansas. Micah Alejado threw a 10-yard TD pass to Blaze Kamoku that made it 23-21 with 10 seconds left but Alejado's pass intended for Brandon White fell incomplete on the 2-point conversion attempt. The Bulldogs recovered the onside kick attempt.

E.J. Warner was 22-of-29 passing for 230 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown to Richie Anderson III that cut the Fresno State (4-1) deficit to 9-7 with 38 seconds left in the first half. De'jon Benton strip-sacked Warner in the end zone and the resulting safety gave Hawaii (3-2) a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter and Jamih Otis had a scooped up a fumbled lateral and raced 37 yards yards for a touchdown to make it 9-0. Alejado was 28-of-42 passing for 219 yards and threw two of his career-high three interceptions in the fourth quarter. - Fresno State/AP College Football

Jesus Gomez kicked a 43-yard field goal on the game's final play to give defending Big 12 champion Arizona State a 27-24 win over Baylor on Saturday night in the conference opener for both teams. It was the fourth field goal of the game for Gomez, a left-footed senior transfer from Eastern Michigan. He also made kicks of 31, 21 and 33 yards, and is 9-of-10 for the Sun Devils (3-1, 1-0 Big 12). Sam Leavitt completed 22 of 32 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a score for Arizona State. Baylor (2-2, 0-1) tied the game 24-24 with 1:52 left on Sawyer Robertson's 33-yard TD strike to Ole Miss transfer Michael Trigg, whose 1-yard catch and stretch for a touchdown had put the Bears up 17-16 with 9:02 left.

The Sun Devils responded to Trigg's second TD with an 11-play scoring drive, and Gomez booted the go-ahead kick right down the middle as time expired. Arizona State moved the ball into Baylor territory on its game-winning drive after a personal foul penalty followed a 3-yard completion from Leavitt to preseason All-America receiver Jordyn Tyson. Tyson caught the third-down pass in stride and slid to the ground just before Bears defensive back DJ Coleman ran into him. Robertson was 25 of 39 passing for 251 yards and three TDs. Bryson Washington ran 17 times for 111 yards for Baylor. - Arizona State/AP College Football

Blake Baker threw for 239 yards and ran for a touchdown as Louisiana Tech built a big first-half lead and held off Southern Miss for a 30-20 victory on Saturday night. Baker's 73-yard pass to Eli Finley helped set up his 1-yard touchdown run about a minute into the game. Omiri Wiggins and Clay Thevenin scored on short-yardage runs, sandwiched between Kolbe Fields' 48-yard pick-6, to help stake Louisiana Tech (3-1) to a 30-10 halftime lead.

Reed Harradine added a 30-yard field goal late in the third quarter for Southern Miss (2-2). Braylon Braxton threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Carl Chester with 22 seconds to play. Braxton was 28-of-47 passing for 392 yards with two touchdowns. Chester finished with five receptions for 152 yards. Kyirin Heath also had a touchdown catch for the Eagles. In the fourth quarter, Southern Miss punted twice and turned the ball over on downs from Louisiana Tech's 40 before Chester's late TD catch. The Eagles had 514 yards of offense compared to the Bulldogs' 340, but they were 7 of 17 on third-down conversions and 0 for 2 on fourth down. - Louisiana Tech/AP College Football
