Davis Warren and Alex Orji each threw a touchdown pass, Will Johnson returned an interception for a score and No. 9 Michigan started defense of its national championship with a 30-10 win over Fresno State on Saturday night. The Wolverines (1-0) were sluggish on offense for much of the night, breaking in new quarterbacks behind a revamped offensive line and Sherrone Moore, who made his coaching debut as Jim Harbaugh's full-time replacement. The Bulldogs (0-1) trailed by just four points deep into the second quarter and 16-10 midway through the fourth before Michigan pulled away.

Warren, who beat out Orji to start at quarterback, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Colston Loveland to give Michigan a 23-10 lead with 5:43 left. Johnson picked off a pass on the ensuing possession and returned it 86 yards, making the score lopsided in a game that was close for much of the night. The game opened with Orji throwing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Warren, but the rest of the night didn't go very smoothly for Moore's team until late in the game. Davis, a former walk-on who overcame leukemia in high school, was 15 of 25 for 118 yards with a touchdown and an interception. - AP College Football

Jam Griffin and Anthony Hankerson each ran for over 150 yards and combined for four rushing touchdowns as Oregon State relied on its ground game in a 38-15 victory over Idaho State on Saturday. Griffin, who played for Oregon State in 2022 and returned to Corvallis after spending last season with Ole Miss, shined in his return despite losing a first quarter fumble. He had 160 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Hankerson gained 155 yards on 24 attempts with two scores. The Beavers amassed 379 yards rushing.

Hankerson's second touchdown of the first half-a 6-yard run with 27 seconds remaining in the second quarter-gave Oregon State a 17-9 lead at the break. Gevani McCoy connected with David Wells Jr. on a 55-yard touchdown pass to extend the Beavers' lead to 24-9 at 10:39 of the third quarter. Griffin's 22-yard touchdown scamper pushed the lead to 31-9. A 9-yard touchdown pass from Idaho State's Hunter Hays to Michael Shulikov cut the lead to 31-15 with about one minute left in the third quarter. Griffin's 20-yard touchdown run in the fourth sealed the win for the Beavers. - AP College Football

Joey Aguilar threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and Appalachian State opened the football season with a 38-10 win over East Tennessee State on Saturday. Aguilar hit Christian Horn for an 83-yard score on the Mountaineers second snap of the season and went on to finish 22 of 37 for 326 yards. Devontae Houston scored on an 80-yard run late in the second quarter for the FCS Buccaneers before Aguilar capped an 80-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge as Appalachian State scored on its first three possessions and led 17-7 at the half.

A 34-yard TD pass to Eli Wilson, and another 1-yard Aguilar plunge were sandwiched around Makai Jackson's 47-yard run as the Mountaineers scored touchdowns on three-straight possessions to lead 38-10. Houston finished with 126 yards on the ground for East Tennessee State. Appalachian State outgained ETSU 500-305. First year ETSU coach Tre Lamb opened the season at Appalachian State last year as the coach of Gardner-Webb, which fell 45-24 before going on to the FCS playoffs. - AP College Football

Wisconsin's only punt of the nght resulted in arguably the biggest play of the game. The Badgers were trailing early in the fourth quarter when a punt from Atticus Bertrams bounced sideways and hit Western Michigan's DaShon Bussell, who was trying to get away from it. Wisconsin's Austin Brown pounced on the loose ball at Western Michigan's 20-yard line. That turnover resulted in a Tawee Walker 6-yard touchdown run that put Wisconsin ahead for good with 10:35 remaining in the Badgers' 28-14 season-opening victory Friday night. "That completely flipped the field, took all the momentum out of their sails and put it into ours," Wisconsin safety Hunter Wohler said. "We were able to capitalize and finish the game out." Walker, an Oklahoma transfer, rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Chez Mellusi led Wisconsin's rushing attack with 74 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts.

Western Michigan's Jalen Buckley rushed for 64 yards and had two 1-yard touchdown runs. Wisconsin, which entered as a 24 1/2-point favorite, had a tougher time than expected before winning for the 28th time in its last 29 home openers. The exception was a 16-10 loss to Penn State in 2021. "It was a challenge," Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell said. "I think more than anything you've got to find ways to win. That's what we did tonight." On his go-ahead touchdown, Walker bounced off cornerback Aaron Wofford inside the 5 and bulled his way into the end zone. Tyler Van Dyke's two-point conversion pass to Trech Kekahuna made it 21-14 with 10:35 left. Wisconsin's Aaron Witt and Nyzier Fourqurean stopped Buckley on fourth-and-1 from midfield to end Western Michigan's next possession. Van Dyke then scored from 6 yards out to make it 28-14 with 3:17 left. Xavier Lucas picked off a Hayden Wolff pas with less than two minutes remaining to seal the victory. - AP College Football

Cam Rising made his return with a career-high five touchdown passes - three to Brant Kuithe - to power No. 12 Utah to a 49-0 win over Southern Utah on Thursday night. Rising, a seventh-year senior quarterback, shined in his first game action since tearing multiple knee ligaments in the Utes' Rose Bowl loss to Penn State on Jan. 2, 2023, going 10 of 15 for 254 yards and 25 rushing yards as the 84th consecutive sellout crowd at Rice-Eccles Stadium held its collective breath on each rush. He left the game in the second quarter with Utah up 35-0.

Kuithe, who also missed last season and most of the 2022 campaign, caught three touchdown passes - all in the second quarter. He caught a 29-yard toss for a score on the first play of the quarter before an 18-yarder three minutes later. With 1:08 to play in the half, Kuithe fought off three defenders on his way into the end zone on a 11-yard grab. Rising's barrage marked the first time Utah had five passing TDs in a half since Brian Johnson against San Diego State in 2008, the last season Utah went undefeated. In their first game as a member of the Big 12 Conference, the Utes churned 513 yards of total offense in their 15th straight win over FCS opponents. Utah only reached the 500-yard mark once in 2023, against Arizona State. Kuithe wrote his way into the Big 12 record book as the first tight end to ever have three touchdown receptions in a half. - AP College Football
