Eric Kiesau noticed a change in Tar'Varish Dawson Jr.'s demeanor about midway through last season. Kiesau, now entering his first season as Auburn's offensive coordinator, said Dawson "might be the most improved young player on offense" this offseason. He put together a strong spring, which he capped with three receptions for 28 yards and a 7-yard carry during the A-Day spring game while leading the Tigers in targets and receptions. During SEC Media Days last month, Harsin described Dawson as a "completely different player" than he was a year ago and identified him as someone who has the kind of big-play potential that Auburn desperately needs at the wide receiver position. "He has good hands, and he can track the ball," Kiesau said. "Like I said, I'm excited. And we have to be creative with how we use him. Really. We do. But we'll find ways."

The Tigers are replacing two of their top-three receivers from last season, with Kobe Hudson now at UCF and Demetris Robertson's eligibility exhausted. Outside of fifth-year senior Shedrick Jackson, who was the team's second-leading receiver in 2021, Auburn doesn't have much experience or proven playmakers at the position heading into the season. That's where Dawson will have his opportunity, along with a slew of other returners and newcomers in the room. Expectations appear to be mounting for Dawson, though, especially after some of the potential he flashed when he first arrived on campus last year. Dawson, rated as the nation's No. 22 athlete coming out of high school, made a fast impression a year ago during fall camp with his speed and big-play ability. - Birmingham News

When Eli Huggins posed for photos with his family during Kansas State's senior day festivities ahead of a matchup with Baylor last season, he wasn't expecting to play another football game at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. "I wasn't planning on coming back," Huggins says now. "All the way through the season, even on senior night, I was fully expecting to leave and then hopefully make the leap to the NFL." So why is Huggins still in Manhattan preparing for his fifth year of college football as preseason camp gets underway this week at K-State? Turns out, the allure of playing for the Wildcats as a "super senior" was stronger than he originally expected. Yes, he could have made a run at the NFL after playing four seasons at K-State and piling up 49 tackles along the way. But the more he thought about his options, the 6-foot-5 and 297-pound defensive tackle realized he had unfinished business. "The more I talked with coaches and family and looked at this year's team, the group we have coming back, it just seemed like the best opportunity for me was to come back," Huggins said. "I love Manhattan. It's such a special place. I guess I just wasn't ready to leave yet."

Under normal circumstances, Huggins would not have college eligibility remaining. He has been a student at K-State since 2017. Since then, he has spent one season on the sideline with a redshirt and four more on the field in a purple uniform. But one of those seasons occurred during the coronavirus pandemic, which didn't count against his five-year clock. That gave him the opportunity to return to K-State for a rare sixth season as a "super senior." "It was a Christmas present, man," defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman said. "He means the world to us as a player, but also a leader. He is a guy who can come in here and show future generations of Cats how to get it done. We are happy to have him." - The Kansas City Star

Most were surprised when Texas A&M senior Ainias Smith was arrested on a trio of charges last month. That's not who they thought Smith was, and it turned out they were right, because the charges were later dropped. Smith missed a chance to represent himself and A&M at the Southeastern Conference Media Days last month, but he was front and center in the Kyle Field media center a few hours before A&M's first practice of fall camp late Wednesday afternoon. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." Smith was arrested on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

The only thing he turned out to be guilty of was poor judgement, because the person in the car confessed to owning the marijuana and gun. Some had to think Smith was guilty, and possibly some still have doubt of his total innocence. "I think he came out and explained it," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "You tell the truth and you move on and don't worry about it. You can't worry about that. You have to go play and do the right things and make the right decisions each and every day." Smith was disappointed he didn't get to attend the SEC Media Days in Atlanta. "It was a great opportunity to build my brand and get a little bit more exposure for myself," Smith said. "But now that that's past, [I'm] not able to worry about that any more, and I'm excited to play ball. I mean, it's all I got left now." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

Utah coach Kyle Whittingham does not do hyperbole. When Whittingham began fielding questions, iIt didn't take long for the topic to swing to Cam Rising. The specific question centered around the incumbent fifth-year quarterback's leadership style and why it inspires confidence in his teammates. "He's one of the hardest workers on the football team, if not the hardest," Whittingham said. "You can talk about it, but you have to be about it. His performance is outstanding, his film study, everything. There is no weakness in Cam Rising right now. He's doing everything right coming off an outstanding year, and we're fortunate to have him on our team." - Salt Lake Tribune

Purdue linebacker Yanni Karlaftis sustained a knee injury this summer while working out on his own. It slowed his offseason progress, but the West Lafayette graduate is back to full strength and competing for playing time at the LEO (defensive end/linebacker) position. "He's worked hard, he's put on weight, he's put on strength and this is the best he's looked, and I think he feels that way. He'll be in the mix and be a contributor for many years," Brohm said. - Journal and Courier

He threw for 2,133 yards to become just the second quarterback in NCCU history to register more than 2,000 passing yards in consecutive seasons, while completing 58.0% of his passes (177-for-305) and accounting for 23 total touchdowns (15 passing, 8 rushing).   DJ Uiagalelei dealt with lingering finger and knee injuries last season, Swinney said, but the quarterback confirmed he's fully healthy entering preseason camp. He should benefit, too, from continuity and health along Clemson's offensive line, which got rolling during the Tigers' late-season six-game winning streak and returns four starters. Uiagalelei also has a haul of returning skill position players, which includes a three-headed monster at running back and a number of experienced wide receivers and tight ends, at his disposal.

At that point, it'll be up to Uiagalelei and Uiagalelei alone to rise above sophomore struggles and meet Clemson's sky-high expectations, as well as his sky-high expectations for himself. Easier said than, Swinney acknowledges, but attainable for his QB1. "It's a game of performance, and you can't change that," Swinney said. "I can talk about how great he is all day long. He has to go do it. (But) I believe in him, and there ain't no doubt about that." - The State

Bo Melton and Isaih Pacheco, who led Rutgers in receiving and rushing, respectively, for each of the past three seasons, were both selected in the seventh round of the NFL Draft this April. Can the Scarlet Knights replace their production? There are some strong candidates on the outside. Taj Harris was one of the best receivers in the ACC at Syracuse, while Sean Ryan flashed his potential at West Virginia. Aron Cruickshank, who is on pace to recover from his torn ACL in time to participate in the season opener, and Joshua Youngblood are two of the most dynamic athletes in the Big Ten. Shameen Jones, who finished second behind Melton in receiving yards in the last two seasons, has a chance to break through. And if no receivers can fill the void, there is always do-it-all offensive weapon Johnny Langan. - Star Ledger

The University of Utah opened fall camp on Wednesday afternoon, but depending on who you ask, the first practice didn't totally feel like a first practice. The Utes are projected to return 17 starters in 2022. Among them, Cam Rising was a revelation last fall at quarterback, Tavion Thomas rushed for over 1,100 yards and 21 touchdowns last season, both were named All-Pac-12 last season. Up and down the projected two-deep, there are third-year, fourth-year, even fifth-year guys at some positions. Opening camp with that amount of experience presumably means less of a learning curve for the players. "Without a doubt, and it's very evident they spent a lot of time on the field together this summer on their own because today was more like a practice 8 or practice 9 feel as far as the lack of mental mistakes and how smooth things went," 18th-year head coach Kyle Whittingham said. - Salt Lake Tribune

While dealing with the aftermath of a July arrest for DUI, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and gun possession, Texas A&M wide receiver was unable to attend SEC Media Days. He was exonerated and charges were dropped, so this week he was more than happy to meet the press. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." "He's a leader," A&M junior defensive back Antonio Johnson said. "He leads best by example." The three-star recruit from Sugar Land Dulles came to A&M as a wide receiver. He moved to running back when needed then moved back to receiver. He also returns punts. He's Fisher's Swiss Army knife. "He'll be whoever he needs to be," said Johnson. "That's the best way I can put it." - Bryan/College Station Eagle
