It's been less than a week, but Keionte Scott appears settled into the Auburn secondary. Scott didn't get to practice with Auburn in the spring. He didn't even get to work out with the team in summer. Instead, he arrived on campus on Aug. 3 - a day before Auburn's fall camp started. But according to those around the program, the junior college product is already standing out. After the first day of camp, cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett said Scott grabbed an interception in his first practice.

Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin said Tuesday that Scott has "shown up and made an immediate impact." And safety Donovan Kaufman said his new teammate "makes plays every day." "He's a baller," Kaufman said Tuesday. "You can tell that he came in with the intention of 'I'm about to play. I'll make sure that I'll play.' I love it. I love his game. And then he wants to learn. He'll come ask 'What do I need to do with this? How do I do this?' Knowing that somebody wants to get better, it makes it easier for you to try to help them." Scott came to Auburn after two seasons at Snow College in Utah, a prominent JUCO program in which the defensive back made his presence felt during a 2021 season that saw his squad finish the year with a loss to Hutchinson Community College in NJCAA Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas. - Opelika-Auburn News

Alex Fontenot, who finished with 326 yards and five touchdowns last year, missed the end of spring with an injury, but is back and shining during the first week of CU's preseason camp. "He's having an outstanding camp right now," Dorrell said. "He's kind of got a business attitude, gets the work in, doesn't say boo. But you notice him on the field whenever he gets a rep. "I just see his confidence in his movement skills and the things he's doing right now just reminds me where it was a couple of years ago." Never lacking in confidence, Fontenot is even more so after adding weight and muscle in the offseason. "When I'm in practice, I lower my shoulder and I don't feel like I'm getting bounced," he said. "I don't feel like I'm bouncing; I feel like I'm delivering the blow and just keep moving forward." Fontenot is typically looking ahead but said he's enjoyed his journey at CU and is eager to make his final year his best year. "Definitely it's been a weird journey," he said. "But if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would. I had the opportunity to be behind some great backs, such as Phil Lindsay and also Travon. "(Being at CU) has taught me a lot of life lessons, which I'm grateful for." - Daily Camera

Florida State offensive lineman Kayden Lyles will miss this upcoming season with an injury. Lyles, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, announced the news on social media Wednesday. "I know all too well that injuries are a part of playing football at the highest level. Unfortunately, I will not be able to be on the field this season, but I came to Florida State to make an impact on this program and that is still what I will do," Lyles posted on Twitter. "We have a group of dedicated offensive linemen, and I am going to use the experiences I've gained through five years of playing college football to help them develop any way I can. "Thank you to everyone for the support. I'm going to approach every day with the mindset of improvement, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this team will do this season." Coach Mike Norvell addressed Lyles' status following practice, confirming the injury happened last week. "I hate it for him just for the work he's put in," said Norvell. "He's done a great job since he's got here. We'll explore all options moving forward. "He's going to actively be a part of what we're doing but unfortunately it won't be on the field for us this year." - Orlando Sentinel

Through Michigan's strength staff, Bruce Feldman found out that: Mazi Smith has benched 22 reps of 325 pounds (not the typical 225), close-grip benched 550 pounds, posts a 44-inch vertical jump, and broad-jumped 9 feet, 4 1/2 inches. And that's just his power and agility. As for speed, well, Smith has that, too. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native has clocked a shuttle time of 4.41 seconds, which Feldman notes would've tied any defensive tackle at the NFL Scouting Combine this year; a 3-cone drill time of 6.95 seconds, which would have been the fastest; and a 60-yard shuttle of 11.90 seconds.

Perhaps even more impressive, however, is Smith's performance in some of the drills Herbert and his staff ask the players to take part in. In one specific drill, players attempt to jump up a series of seven 26-inch high stairs as fast as they can. The program record is apparently 2.21 seconds, and Smith did it in 2.82 seconds. (For comparison, Aidan Hutchinson, who was No. 2 on Feldman's 'freaks' list last year and is 60 pounds lighter than Smith, did it in 2.57 seconds.) Smith even dominated Michigan's combo-twist machine aimed to measure resistance in the trenches, forcing the strength staff to call the manufacturer to have more weight added to the machine. "Mazi's rotational strength is ridiculous," Herbert told The Athletic, touting Smith as the strongest defensive lineman he's seen in his 25 years in football. "He is an incredible combination of rare traits packaged into one player. He is just ridiculously strong and powerful." - Ann Arbor News

On Sunday, Miami's players were introduced to their renovated locker room, named after UM alum, former wrestler and movie star Dwyane "The Rock" Johnson. The locker room features leather seats, custom nameplates that include pictures and hometowns and more. "Compared to the locker room we had last, compared to that, it's completely different," linebacker Corey Flagg Jr. said. "I could spend the night in that thing. It's a completely different locker room." The new locker room drew a rave review from offensive lineman Justice Oluwaseun on Tuesday. "[The lockers are] all pretty big," Oluwaseun said. "We all have enough size for everything. It looks nice. It feels good being in there."

Oluwusean said the chairs in the locker room recline, and there is ventilation in the lockers. He added that putting players' hometowns on their lockers was a nice touch, as well. "It has your state on it, too," he said, "so it reminds you where you came from and who you're doing it for and stuff like that." Upgrading the football team's locker room is part of an ongoing review and upgrading of the Hurricanes' facilities under athletic director Dan Radakovich. "It's a blessing to have," Oluwaseun said. "Coach [Mario] Cristobal emphasized trying to get us a new locker room and stuff like that. We had the other one for a really long time. It's state of the art, you can say." - Sun Sentinel

Wisconsin's first day in full pads is set for Tuesday, the sixth practice of preseason camp. That means Paul Chryst and his staff should get a better feel for the team's personnel, particularly the linemen. The lack of full-contact work hasn't prevented Chryst from feeling optimistic about tailback Chez Mellusi, who missed the final four games last season after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee. "The way I was thinking about it was: If he can just clear some hurdles each practice," Chryst said after practice Monday morning.

"He had one - it sounds simple - but in a team setting got a handoff and (got) through it. He got hit a little bit. That was good to see. "Then he had another one where he kind of got banged to the ground. And he got back up. You don't want to take it for granted. Those are hurdles that he's got to go through." Mellusi had one run Monday in which he cut hard and accelerated toward the sideline. The move appeared natural and he appeared comfortable after the play. "He has been able to get probably as much (work) you want him to get," Chryst said. "You want him to be in a situation where he is wanting more. You don't want to be coasting at the end of the week. "He has been getting good work, honestly a little bit more than I anticipated." - Journal Sentinel

The University of Utah has its highest-ever preseason ranking. The Utes, 10-4 overall and Pac-12 champions for the first time last season, were slotted at No. 8 in the preseason AFCA Coaches Poll, released on Monday morning. The No. 8 preseason ranking eclipses the program's previous preseason high in either major poll, No. 14 in the AP Top 25 ahead of the 2019 season. That team peaked in early December of that season, getting to No. 5 in the AP and Coaches Polls, plus the College Football Playoff rankings.

Last season's Rose Bowl qualifier began the season unranked in the Coaches Poll, but wound up finishing 12th, its highest finish in that poll since the vaunted 13-0 2004 team finished fourth. Kyle Whittingham's program was joined Monday in the poll by fellow-Pac-12 programs Oregon (No. 12) and USC (No. 15). "You have to just embrace them," Whittingham said of managing expectations on Monday afternoon following Utah's fifth fall camp practice. "They are there and there's no hiding from them, so we will meet them head on. We have to understand we're getting a lot of national attention and we have to be mature enough to handle that, go about our business the right way and not think we have all the answers, that we've arrived." - Salt Lake Tribune

UTEP football returns one of their most important pieces on the offense for 2022. Trent Thompson, a senior tight end, is ready to take his game to the next level for the Miners as they approach the beginning of their season. "He is one of the most important guys on our football team," said UTEP head coach Dana Dimel. "He brings so much to the team and is one of our very, very best players on the team and at his position. He's an outstanding blocker, can catch the ball well when he gets his opportunities and just a really physical football player, so we love Trent. He's a really, really important to our ball club." In 2021, Thompson had his best year for the Miners, as he was the team's primary tight end target.

He collected nine receptions for 133 yards and four touchdowns. Thompson finished his 2021 season on a high note. The product out of Houston, Texas recorded career highs in yards (52) and touchdowns (two) against Fresno State in the New Mexico Bowl. One of his signature moments, was when Thompson was the one on the receiving end of a 51-yard score against the Bulldogs in the bowl game. For 2022, Thompson is aiming to have the best season of his collegiate career. "This is going to be the best year, in my opinion," said Thompson. "You could take my 2020 and 2021 seasons and combine that together. That is what you're going to get a bunch of pancake blocks and hopefully double the amount of touchdowns." - KTSM
