Joey Aguilar stayed on the ground after a long run and the Tennessee fans held their breath until he sat up. Then they started chanting "Joey! Joey!" The quarterback who came through the transfer portal from Appalachian State via a short detour to UCLA has been everything they could have wanted. Aguilar quickly picked up the offense, which is humming at coach Josh Heupel's up-tempo pace as the No. 11 Vols go into Saturday's showdown at sixth-ranked Alabama. Heupel, who won a national title and was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy playing quarterback for Oklahoma in 2000, said Wednesday that Aguilar came in humble and ready to compete and worked to earn the trust of his new teammates after arriving in mid-May. Aguilar's experience helped. "He's handled it at a really high level," Heupel said. "Certainly, a lot more comfortable than when we first started." Heupel likes Aguilar's work ethic, aggressiveness and how the quarterback remains even-keeled from series to series.

"What I love about him, whether it's a good play, bad play, good series, bad series - same demeanor coming off on the sideline," Heupel said. Aguilar threw for 221 yards and a touchdown and ran for 59 yards in last week's 34-31 win over Arkansas. But it was the way he ran that had Heupel and more than 100,000 fans on the edge of their seats. On one run, Aguilar crashed into the communication system on the Razorbacks' sideline, cutting off headset communications for the rest of the game. Late in the game, Aguilar finished a 28-yard sprint up the middle of the field and came down with the football stuck in his midsection. "That ball was deep in my stomach," said Aguilar, who was able to smile recalling the moment an hour later. "That took the air out of me, for sure." Heupel appreciated the run to help seal the win: "I want him to get down once the play is over." Aguilar is off to a strong start. He has completed 64.8% of his passes (118 of 182) for 1,680 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has been intercepted five times, an area of concern coming into the season after he was picked off 14 times last season. He also has run for 117 yards and two more scores. He ranks 12th in the country averaging 280 yards passing per game, just ahead of Alabama's Ty Simpson (279.67). Tennessee also leads the nation in scoring with 48.2 points a game. - AP College Football

Dylan Raiola threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Dane Key with 1:08 remaining, and Nebraska edged Maryland 34-31 on Saturday. Raiola threw for 260 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions in a wild game in which the Cornhuskers (5-1, 2-1 Big Ten) squandered a 10-point lead. The Terrapins (4-2, 1-2) led 31-24 in the fourth quarter before Emmett Johnson's 50-yard run gave Nebraska the ball at the Maryland 10. The shifty running back didn't get the ball again on that drive, and a delay of game penalty on fourth down forced the Cornhuskers to settle for a field goal and a four-point deficit. Nebraska got the ball back, and Raiola guided his team 81 yards in seven plays for the go-ahead TD. Maryland then drove back near midfield, but freshman Malik Washington was called for a disputed intentional grounding penalty that knocked the Terps back 14 yards. Washington had a receiver open to the left and perhaps would have seen him if he'd had more time. Washington eventually threw incomplete on fourth-and-four from the Nebraska 49.

Dontay Joyner scored on a 67-yard interception return in the third quarter for Maryland, which lost a second straight heartbreaker at home after blowing a 20-point lead against Washington the previous weekend. Nebraska opened the scoring on a 64-yard catch-and-run by Nyziah Hunter. An offensive pass interference penalty wiped out a touchdown later in the first quarter, and the Cornhuskers settled for a field goal. Then, Nolan Ray ran for a 28-yard touchdown for Maryland, and the Terps cashed in on Raiola's first interception when Washington found Leon Haughton Jr. for a 21-yard TD. An 85-yard kick return by Kenneth Williams set up Raiola's 7-yard touchdown pass to Luke Lindenmeyer, and his 12-yard TD throw to Hunter made it 24-14. But Raiola was picked off again near the toward the end of the half, and Maryland managed a field goal before halftime. The Terps took the opening drive of the third and tied the game on a 1-yard scoring run by DeJuan Williams. The interception return by Joyner gave Maryland the lead. - Nebraska/AP College Football

Chris Johnson Jr. ran for an 87-yard touchdown and took a short pass 42 yards for a score after a nifty escape from quarterback Kevin Jennings as SMU beat Stanford 34-10 on Saturday. Justin Medlock returned an interception 96 yards for a clinching TD in the fourth quarter of the 19th consecutive regular-season conference victory for the Mustangs (4-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast). SMU is 10-0 in the ACC in the regular season since returning to a power conference last season for the first time since 1995. The Mustangs lost to Clemson in the ACC championship game last year.

The Cardinal (2-4, 1-2) answered Johnson’s long rushing score with 35 seconds to go before halftime by driving 75 yards in four plays and 33 seconds to get within 17-7 at the break. Stanford cornerback Aaron Morris was immobilized and taken off the field in an ambulance in the first quarter after tackling SMU receiver Jordan Hudson. Morris cleared precautionary tests and was allowed to rejoin the team before the end of the game. Five plays after Morris’ injury, Derrick McFall took a short pass from Jennings 19 yards for the game’s first points. Johnson was 22 of 30 for 247 yards and two scores. On the TD to Johnson, Jennings escaped immediate pressure from Tevarua Tafiti by pivoting out the tackle, then lobbing the pass to Johnson just before he was crunched by several defenders. Johnson was alone along the sideline before cutting toward the middle of the field. - SMU/AP College Football

Jalen Berger scored three touchdowns and Nico Iamaleava threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns Saturday to lead UCLA to a 38-13 victory over Michigan State. Berger, who transferred to UCLA from Michigan State after the 2023 season, ran for 83 yards on 13 carries and also had three catches for 24 yards. It is the second straight win for the Bruins (2-4, 2-1 Big Ten) after dropping the first four games of the season. After the Spartans (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten) scored first on quarterback Aidan Chiles’ 2-yard run, UCLA dominated the rest of the first half and ran off 38 straight points.

Mateen Bhaghani nailed a 47-yard field goal, Iamaleava tossed touchdown passes to Berger and Titus Mokiao-Atimalala as UCLA jumped to a 24-7 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Jaivian Thomas added a 1-yard scoring run and Berger had his second touchdown catch. Chiles was forced from the game with 11:12 left in the third quarter when he was sacked by Keanu Williams. Chiles was evaluated in the medical tent and watched the remainder of the game from the sideline. He was replaced by Alessio Milivojevic who threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Nick Marsh in the fourth quarter. - UCLA/AP College Football

Stanford cornerback Aaron Morris was cleared medically to return to the sideline against SMU after being immobilized and taken off the field in an ambulance following a tackle in the first quarter Saturday, the school said. Morris' face mask was removed while he was placed on a stretcher before he was loaded onto the ambulance at SMU's Ford Stadium. He was moving his arms and legs as medical personnel began attending to him on the field, and Stanford spokesman Brian Brownfield said Morris was "alert and responsive. Doing well." "Aaron Morris has cleared all precautionary tests and is returning to be with the team for the conclusion of the SMU matchup," the school said in a statement released early in the second half.

Morris and linebacker Sam Mattingly closed on Jordan Hudson from opposite sides after the SMU wide receiver made a 12-yard catch with about five minutes left in the first quarter. Morris was the first to make contact before Mattingly came in over the top of Morris and Hudson. Morris is a junior from Lowell, Massachusetts. He was playing in the fourth of Stanford's six games this season after making 17 appearances in his first two years. - AP College Football

Jackson Brousseau followed a 73-yard touchdown run by Justin Marshall with three first-half touchdown passes and Colorado State cruised to a 49-21 victory over Fresno State on Friday night. Marshall's long scoring run came on the third play from scrimmage for Colorado State (2-4, 1-1 Mountain West Conference) and the Rams took a 7-0 lead and never looked back. Jace Bellah picked off an E.J. Warner pass and returned it 27 yards to the Rams' 47-yard line. Five plays later Brousseau connected with Javion Kinnard for a 29-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

Brousseau had a 4-yard scoring toss to Rocky Beers 49 seconds into the second quarter for a 21-0 lead. Brousseau added a 20-yard touchdown pass to Beers and Paul Tangelo returned a Warner fumble 36 yards to the end zone for a 35-14 advantage at halftime. Warner had touchdown throws to Josiah Freeman covering 23 and 26 yards for Fresno State (5-2, 2-1) in the second quarter before connecting with Rayshon Luke for a 23-yard score with 5:51 left in the third to cut the deficit to 35-21. Lloyd Avant had a 12-yard touchdown run with 9:15 left to play and Jalen Dupree scored on a 4-yard run two plays after Bellah's second interception and 26-yard return to the 7-yard line to cap the scoring. Brousseau completed 12 of 18 passes for 144 yards. Marshall rushed seven times for 93 yards. Warner finished with 350 yards on 28-for-49 passing with three interceptions. - Colorado State/AP College Football

  10/10/25 - QB Sam LeavittrSo/2028, LSU + More +

Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is expected to miss the Sun Devils' road game against Utah on Saturday with an undisclosed injury. The No. 21 Sun Devils (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) have won three straight games while Utah (4-1, 1-1) had a lopsided win over West Virginia last weekend. "Sam's been battling something going back to Baylor - he fought through the TCU game," Sun Devils coach Kenny Dillingham told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM on Friday. "Sam does everything he possibly can to come back and play in football games. He's the ultimate competitor. "This week, it just didn't feel as good as we wanted it to leaving Wednesday's practice," Dillingham added. "I think this is the best thing for him and the future season." Leavitt has completed 63.1% of his passes this season for 1,039 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. The sophomore has also run for 281 yards and five touchdowns. Jeff Sims is expected to get the start against Utah. The sixth-year player completed 12 of 23 passes for 155 yards in a start against Cincinnati last season. - AP College Football

Cam Cook rushed for 218 yards and two touchdowns, and Garrison Rippa made a game-winning 52-yard field goal as time expired to give Jacksonville State a 29-27 victory over Sam Houston on Thursday night. Jacksonville State started the final drive at its 17-yard line with 47 seconds left. Cook got the drive going with an 18-yard run and Pearson Baldwin made a 17-yard catch over the middle with five seconds left.

Caden Creel found Baldwin again for a 5-yard gain to get into better field position for Rippa, who entered with a 50-yard make earlier this season, to attempt a career-long kick. Creel had 129 yards throwing and 132 yards rushing for Jacksonville State (3-3, 2-0 Conference USA). Hunter Watson threw for three touchdowns for Sam Houston (0-6, 0-3), which returned home after playing four of its first five games on the road for the first time since 2010. Sam Houston has started 0-6 for the second time in three seasons. Prior to its 0-8 start in 2023, the Bearkats had not started at least 0-6 since opening the 1977 season with seven straight defeats. - Jacksonville State/AP College Football
