Wisconsin running back Chez Mellusi will miss an unspecified length of time after injuring his right wrist in the Badgers’ 42-7 victory over Northwestern. Mellusi has rushed for 223 yards and one touchdown on 56 carries this season, He also has two catches for 25 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown in the Northwestern game. He also threw a 23-yard touchdown late in the second quarter, and the Badgers (3-3, 1-2 Big Ten) raced out to a 28-0 halftime lead on the way to an easy win in their first game since coach Paul Chryst was fired. Wisconsin decided to make a leadership change following losses to Ohio State and Illinois, led by former coach Bret Bielema, by a combined 55 points. Chryst was let go in his eighth season and replaced by Leonhard, a former All-America safety in his sixth year as defensive coordinator and seventh on staff at his alma mater. Mertz completed 20 of 29 passes.

Dike had touchdown catches of 52 and 21 yards in the first half as well as a 6-yarder in the fourth quarter. He caught 10 passes and easily surpassed his previous high of 106 yards.   Hendon Hooker passed for two touchdowns, Jabari Small ran for 127 yards and two scores, and No. 8 Tennessee punished No. 25 LSU for its mistakes and risk-taking in a resounding 40-13 victory over the Tigers on Saturday. A morning kickoff lured LSU fans to Tigers Stadium considerably earlier than usual - and many were gone by the end of the third quarter, when Tennessee led 37-7. The Volunteers (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) matched their best start to a season since 2016 with balance on offense, sound defense that corralled dual-threat LSU QB Jayden Daniels, and opportunistic special teams play. Hooker passed for 239 yards, with scoring passes of 45 and 14 yards to Jalin Hyatt. The fleet-footed QB also accounted for 56 of Tennessee's 264 yards on the ground. Bru McCoy caught seven passes for 140 yards, drawing howls of "Bruuuuuuu!" from a sizeable contingent of fans in Volunteer orange. Those fans' repeated singing of "Good ol' Rocky Top" echoed throughout LSU's Death Valley by game's end.

Tennessee sacked Daniels five times with defensive lineman Byron Young accounting for half of that total. LSU's combination of early special teams failures and costly fourth-down risks helped Tennessee build an early double-digit lead. Jack Bech had the opening kickoff bounce off his chest and straight to Tennessee's Will Brooks at the Tigers' 27-yard line. Five plays later, Small ran for a 1-yard score. Minutes later, the Vols' offense was back on the LSU 26 after Dee Williams' 58-yard punt return. LSU (4-2, 2-1) held Tennessee to Chase McGrath's 35-yard field goal, but missed a chance to trim its deficit when coach Brian Kelly kept the offense on the field on fourth and 4 from the UT 14. A quick pass to Kayshon Boutte near the right sideline came up inches short. Leading 13-0, Tennessee thwarted LSU on fourth and 1 near midfield, stopping Josh Williams' run. On the next play, Hooker's deep throw down the right sideline hit Hyatt in stride to make it 20-0. Hooker's 32-yard pass to McCoy to set up a short McGrath kick that made it 23-7 at the half. - Tennessee/AP College Football

  10/07/22 - CB Sevyn BanksrSr/2023, LSU + More +

Jordan-Hare Stadium went silent as LSU's Sevyn Banks remained on the ground, not moving, after delivering a helmet-first hit on the opening kickoff. Banks was carted off in a stretcher, and by halftime, he was back in the locker room with a neck brace, with movement in his extremities. LSU coach Brian Kelly had more news on Banks at the media conference on Monday. "The diagnosis is a spinal cord bruise, which puts him similar to Major Burns' situation, where there was a bruise, nothing else though, no structural issues," Kelly said. "That's probably going to take 5-6 weeks before we get him back. Now, Major burns starts running today, he'll be outside running with us. Next week, he'll begin football non-contact drills with us. So there will be a similar protocol and procedure provided there's no setbacks along the way." Burns was sidelined for the New Mexico game on Sept. 25. Kelly announced after that he would be out the next 3-6 weeks with an upper neck injury. - Baton Rouge Advocate

It is beginning to sound like Kansas State will be without one of its most experienced players for the remainder of the season. Will Honas, a 6-foot-2 and 233-pound linebacker from Wichita, is not expected to suit up for the Wildcats anytime soon. "I don't believe so," K-State football coach Chris Klieman said on Tuesday. "I think the injuries that Will has had are probably not going to allow for him to move forward. We are still holding out hope, but he has had quite a bit of damage on some injuries throughout his time." Honas enrolled at K-State in the spring after beginning his college football career at Butler Community College and then spending the next four seasons at Nebraska.

He was expected to make an impact on defense for the Wildcats in his final year of eligibility...if he could stay healthy. But things haven't played out that way. "It has been tough on him, I know that," Klieman said. "He has been at every game and at every practice. It is probably not responding the way he hoped it would." Honas, who suffered multiple season-ending injuries while he was with the Cornhuskers, was limited during preseason practices as he dealt with nagging knee injuries. Those issued lingered into the season, and he has been unable to suit up for any of K-State's first five games. The Wildcats had high hopes for Honas when he decided to transfer to K-State. Honas made 144 tackles, including four sacks, during his time with the Huskers. - The Kansas City Star
