Dan Ellington threw five touchdown passes and Georgia State rallied from a 17-point second-quarter deficit to defeat FCS-member Furman 48-42 on Saturday. Ellington completed 29 of 37 passes for 362 yards and no interceptions. His passer rating was 205.2. Furman's Darren Grainger completed 16 of 25 for 323 yards with four TDs and no interceptions. His passer rating was 225.3. Both teams rushed for more than 200 yards and passed for more than 300 as they combined for 1,104 yards of offense. Grainger threw his first two TD passes and Devin Wynn scored on the ground as the Paladins, ranked No. 11 in the FCS coaches' poll, took a 20-3 lead with 12:55 remaining in the second quarter.

Tra Barnett had an 18-yard TD run and Ellington threw his first TD pass of the game as Georgia State (2-0) closed to within 20-17 at halftime. Ellington threw three more TD passes in the third quarter and the Panthers led 38-28 heading to the fourth. Ellington connected with Cornelius McCoy on a 44-yard TD throw and Georgia State added Brandon Wright's 38-yard field goal for a 48-35 lead with 7:35 remaining. Grainger scored on a 12-yard run with 3:26 remaining, but Furman (1-1) went three-and-out on its only subsequent possession. - AP College Football

Darrell Stewart had 10 catches for 185 yards, and No. 19 Michigan State's maligned offense scored touchdowns on its first three drives on the way to a 51-17 win over Western Michigan on Saturday night that gave coach Mark Dantonio a share of the school record for victories. Dantonio won his 109th game for the Spartans, matching Duffy Daugherty's mark. Michigan State (2-0) looked a lot sharper on offense than in its opener against Tulsa. Brian Lewerke threw for 314 yards and three touchdowns, and Elijah Collins had 192 yards on 17 carries.

Dantonio called his team out during the week for its uneven performance in the opener, and the Spartans appeared to get the message. On the first offensive play, Lewerke found an open Stewart for a 33-yard gain. Michigan State opened the scoring on a 2-yard pass from Lewerke to Matt Dotson after only 94 seconds. La'Darius Jefferson added a 2-yard touchdown run, and Stewart scored on a 42-yard reception later in the first quarter to make it 21-0. WMU (1-1) scored in the second quarter on a 14-yard pass from Jon Wassink to Giovanni Ricci, but the Broncos were down 31-7 at halftime. - AP College Football

Nathan Mays threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, Joe Alessi rushed for two scores and Youngstown State amassed 640 total yards of offense in beating Howard 54-28 on Saturday for its second straight win. It was Youngstown State's sixth-most total yards in school history and the most since 638 yards against Indiana State in 2017. The Penguins gained 454 total rushing yards - the fourth-most in school history - led by Braxton Chapman's 132 on eight carries and London Pearson's 126 on six tries. Alessi capped the Penguins' opening drive with a 6-yard TD run, but Howard led 14-6 at the end of the first quarter after Caylin Newton hit Kyle Anthony on a 50-yard TD strike and John Smith VI picked off a Mays pass to set up Dedrick Parson's 2-yard scoring run.

The Penguins scored three straight second quarter TDs for a 27-14 halftime lead, with Mays hitting Jeremiah Braswell on a 38-yard pass, Christian Turner scoring on a 5-yard run and Mays tossing a 15-yard pass to Ryan Emans. Antoine Cook's recovery of a Bison fumble set up Turner's TD run. The Bison closed to 27-21 in the third quarter on Newton's second TD strike to Kyle Anthony, a 22-yarder, before the Penguins scored four unanswered touchdowns. Mays, 8 of 14 for 182 yards passing, scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter and Alessi burst untouched through the line to score on a 40-yard run for a 40-21 lead. Chapman scored on a 78-yard run and Pearson scored on a 75-yarder. - AP College Football

Purdue senior quarterback Elijah Sindelar and speedy sophomore Rondale Moore are developing into a powerful duo. Sindelar passed for 509 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another TD in the Boilermakers' 42-24 victory over Vanderbilt on Saturday. Purdue caught 13 passes for 220 yards, both career highs. "Our offense made a lot of big plays in the passing game so credit to Elijah, Rondale and the receiving corps," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. "My view is pretty high of Rondale so I don't know if it can get much higher. But for someone to continually come through every week and raise the bar and not be satisfied, that's Rondale Moore. He was tremendous (Saturday)." Moore took his career day in stride. "I'm just going out there and doing my job," he said. "Whether that's getting someone else open or me being the first read on the play."

Tight end Brycen Hopkins, from Nashville, caught two touchdown passes. "That's probably the best game I've seen Elijah throw the rock," Hopkins said. "He was zipping it in there when he needed to, he was putting air under it when he needed to. He knows what he's doing and I put my trust in him." The Boilermakers (1-1) scored quickly after taking the second-half kickoff to take a 21-10 edge. Jared Sparks hauled in a wide-open 50-yard TD pass from Sindelar as one Vanderbilt defender fell down on the coverage. It was junior Sparks' first TD and the longest catch of his career. Sindelar's 20-yard TD pass to, pushed the lead to 28-10. The play was set up after a 15-yard penalty for helmet targeting by Vanderbilt cornerback Randall Haynie, who was disqualified. - AP College Football

WEEK 1 SUN BELT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dan Ellington, Georgia State (Sr., QB, Olive Branch, Miss.),...Georgia State senior quarterback Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for the game-clinching score in the fourth quarter to lead the Panthers to a monumental 38-30 victory at Tennessee, the program's first-ever win over a Power Five conference opponent. The senior signal caller passed for 139 yards on 11 completions and rushed for 61 yards.

After completing just one of his first nine attempts, Ellington recovered to go 10-for-13 the rest of the way, including touchdown strikes of 17 yards to wide receiver Cornelius McCoy in the second quarter and six yards to tight end Aubry Payne in the third quarter. Ellington led the Panthers on two 75-yard touchdown drives in the second half to give GSU a 28-23 lead with nine minutes left, and then he scampered for a spectacular 22-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left that essentially clinched the win. He faked a handoff and then eluded several defenders before running into the left corner of the end zone. - Sun Belt Football

  09/02/19 - QB JT Daniels, rSr/2024, Rice + More +

Southern California quarterback J.T. Daniels will miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament and the meniscus in his right knee during the Trojans' opener. Coach Clay Helton confirmed the severity of his sophomore starter's injury Sunday night. USC (1-0) plans to start freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis against Stanford (1-0) at the Coliseum on Saturday. Daniels will redshirt this season, Helton said. With an estimated nine to 12 months of recovery from surgery, Daniels could be ready for camp next year. "He will be missed, but we will have to move forward, and we wish him nothing but the best," Helton said. "We know he's going to be back."

Daniels was hurt when his leg twisted while he was being tackled on a blitz with 27 seconds left in the first half of USC's 31-23 victory over Fresno State. Daniels started 11 games last season for USC's first losing team since 2000, and he won a four-way competition for the starting job last month in camp. Daniels had an inconsistent freshman year after arriving at USC as the nation's top quarterback recruit, but Helton and new offensive coordinator Graham Harrell believed Daniels would thrive in Harrell's version of the Air Raid offense. Daniels looked mostly sharp before his injury against the Bulldogs, going 25 of 34 for 215 yards and a touchdown, but also throwing a goal-line interception. "There were really some glimpses of what this offense can be, and it really excited me and our staff," Helton said. - AP College Football

Vavae Malepeai rushed for a career-high 134 yards, Velus Jones Jr. returned a kickoff 101 yards for a score and Southern California overcame the loss of starting quarterback J.T. Daniels to a right leg injury in a 31-23 victory over Fresno State on Saturday night. Daniels passed for 215 yards before getting hurt on a blitz 27 seconds before halftime. The sophomore was unable to put weight on his right leg, and he returned to the sideline on crutches with a brace on his right knee for the second half.

Freshman backup Kedon Slovis passed for 57 yards in his debut for the Trojans (1-0), who opened a high-pressure season for coach Clay Helton with a major injury overshadowing strong performances across the rest of the Air Raid-style offense installed by new coordinator Graham Harrell. Stephen Carr caught a TD pass and rushed for another score, while Malepeai scored a touchdown and grinded out plenty of tough yards in the second half. Tyler Vaughns had 11 catches for a career-high 150 yards for the Trojans, whose point total was hurt by two red-zone turnovers by Daniels before his injury. - AP College Football

Ahmari Davis scored two touchdowns and Andrew Shelly made four field goals to lead New Mexico to a 39-31 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday night as the opener for both schools was tempered by news that Lobos coach Bob Davie was hospitalized after the game with what the school described as a serious medical issue. "There was an incident with Coach Davie," said New Mexico associate athletic director David Williams. "There will not be a press conference. No players, no coaches."

The university later said Davie was "taken to the hospital as a result of what appeared to be a serious medical condition" and more information would be released as it became available. The 64-year-old coach was taken away by ambulance with his wife in the front seat. Davis, who broke three plays for more than 40 yards, finished with 107 yards rushing and another 58 receiving. He had 183 total yards all of last season. Sheriron Jones, playing in relief of starting quarterback Brandt Hughes, ran for two second-half touchdowns to help the Lobos break open the game. - AP College Football

Illinois running back Mike Epstein has sustained a season-ending injury for the third straight year. Coach Lovie Smith said Monday the junior hurt his knee in the third quarter of the opener against Akron. Epstein has played 13 games over three seasons and rushed for 802 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Epstein started three of the first five games as a freshman in 2017 and was the team's leading rusher before he missed the last seven games with a stress fracture in his right foot. The same injury kept him out of the last five games in 2018. - AP College Football

Frank Harris threw three touchdown passes and UTSA won the inaugural Hometown Showdown with San Antonio rival Incarnate Word, 35-7 in the season opener on Saturday. It was the first meeting on the gridiron between the schools and the Roadrunners' seventh season-opening win in their nine seasons of existence, and their fifth win in their home opener. Harris threw 16 yards to Carlos Strickland II in the first quarter to give UTSA the lead and Brenden Brady capped a 14-play, 78-yard drive early in the second to make it 14-0.

Ameer King pulled in an 11-yard Jon Copeland pass as the Cardinals halved their deficit, but on the next series the Roadrunners pushed their lead back to two touchdowns on Deven Boston's 6-yard run. Harris hit Gavin Sharp from 5-yards out in the third quarter and hit Tykee Ogle-Kellogg from 36-yards out to cap the scoring early in the fourth quarter. Harris finished 28 of 36 for 206 yards passing with one interception and carried 15 times for 123 yards. Copeland threw for 181 yards but the Cardinals managed just 28 yards on 20 carries on the ground. - AP College Football

Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third score as 26-point underdog Georgia State upset Tennessee 38-30 on Saturday in one of the first stunners of the college football season. Georgia State (1-0) beat a Power Five opponent for the first time since this Sun Belt Conference school launched its program in 2010. The Panthers' closest call before this had come in 2016, when they lost 23-17 to Wisconsin after leading in the fourth quarter. Tennessee (0-1) suffered one of the more embarrassing setbacks in its history, the latest blow for a storied program attempting to bounce back from two straight losing seasons.

Georgia State was coming off a 2-10 season in which it had lost its last seven games. Only one of those seven losses was decided by less than two touchdowns. But the Panthers outplayed and outworked Tennessee on Saturday. The hard times for Tennessee were evident from a look at the Neyland Stadium stands. Although the announced attendance was 85,503, thousands of fans apparently left at halftime and many others headed for shaded areas, leaving plenty of sections of the 102,455-seat facility virtually empty as Tennessee attempted its comeback. Tra Barnett put Georgia State ahead for good 28-23 when he raced untouched around the right side with 8:56 remaining. Barnett ended up rushing for 95 yards on 21 carries. - AP College Football
