Purdue quarterback Elijah Sindelar already has spent two weeks going through the concussion protocol. He's going to need better results this week to be cleared for Saturday's Big Ten opener against Minnesota. Coach Jeff Brohm indicated Monday that Sindel ar suffered a setback late last week that could keep the Boilermakers' starter out for a second straight game. "We're still doing exactly what the doctors say," Brohm said during his weekly news conference. "I think he's making progress. We'll see how th is week goes. Really last week we thought he was making progress Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, it wasn't until Thursday where some things popped up again, and that's where we had to start the process over."Sindelar was injured on Purdue's final offe nsive play in a 42-24 victory over Vanderbilt on Sept. 7. Brohm acknowledged later Sindelar probably wouldn't have finished that game if the Boilermakers (1-2) had another possession. At the time of the injury, Sindelar led the Football Bowl Subdivision with 932 yards passing and was tied for the national lead in touchdown passes with nine. Doctors didn't clear Sindelar in time to face TCU the following week - and the difference was noticeable. Redshirt freshman Jack Plummer made his college debut in th e 34-13 loss, going 13 of 29 with 181 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and will likely start again if Sindelar can't play against the surging Golden Gophers (3-0), who have won five straight and six of seven - a stretch that began with last yea r's 41-10 rout over the Boilermakers. - AP College Fotball

Tua Tagovailoa passed for 293 yards and five touchdowns in just three quarters and Alabama rolled past Southern Miss. Tagovailoa had his second straight five-TD game and the Crimson Tide (4-0) raced to a 28-0 lead in the first 19 minutes in yet another l opsided victory. Last season's Heisman Trophy runner-up completed 17 of 21 passes. The Golden Eagles (2-2) couldn't keep up with speedy Tide receiver Henry Ruggs III early. Ruggs had a career high in receiving yards even before the first quarter ended, w ith touchdowns of 45 and 74 yards in the opening nine minutes. He finished with four catches for 148 yards, all in the first half and all on four targets. He sprinted to the end zone on a slant pattern for the 45-yarder, then topped that after slow ing down to catch the ball before accelerating to the end zone. Najee Harris gained 110 yards on 14 carries to become the Tide's first 100-yard rusher since last season's LSU game. Bronco Mendenhall isn't big on fiery halftime speeches. So, with his team trailing visiting Old Dominion by 10 points at halftime, the Virginia coach's message to his players was simple. "All I said was, 'Now that that's over, we'll start playing,'" Mend enhall said. His defense certainly did. Linebacker Zane Zandier returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown, part of a dominant defensive second half, as the 21st-ranked Cavaliers rallied past the Monarchs 28-17 on Saturday night to remain undefeat ed. Old Dominion's failed fourth-down try in its own territory set up Virginia's go-ahead score, a 7-yard touchdown run by Wayne Taulapapa with 10:16 to go for a 21-17 edge. After the game, Monarchs coach Bobby Wilder defended the decision. "We cam e in here to win and that is how we tried to play today," he said. The Cavaliers (4-0) are off to their best start since opening 5-0 in 2004. The Monarchs (1-2) have lost two in a row, both to in-state ACC opponents. They lost to Virginia Tech two weeken ds ago, a year after stunning the Hokies in Norfolk. Linebacker Charles Snowden finished with a game-high 15 tackles, including two of the five sacks on Old Dominion quarterback Stone Smartt. He echoed Mendenhall's sentiment that the halftime mood was mo re about getting reset than getting motivated. "Just kind of gathering ourselves in the locker room, settling down, taking a breather," Snowden said. "Wasn't a lot of 'rah-rah.' It was just, 'go out and play the way we know we can play." - Virginia/AP Co llege Football

Jason Hughes kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired and New Hampshire turned back Rhode Island 27-24 in its Colonial Athletic Association opener on Saturday. Rhode Island pulled even with the Wildcats (1-2, 1-0 CAA) at 24-all on Zoe Bryant Jr.'s 2-y ard touchdown run that capped a 13-play, 77-yard drive and took 4:16 off the clock. But that still left true freshman quarterback Max Brosmer and New Hampshire 90 seconds to make something happen. Dylan Laube returned the kickoff 27 yards to the New Hamp shire 28 yard-line and Brosmer hooked up with Brian Espanet for a 41-yard gain on first down. Brosmer later kept the drive alive by running for eight yards on third-and-4, setting the stage for Hughes. The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead just two plays in to the game when Brosmer connected with Malik Love for a 78-yard score. Brosmer added a 2-yard TD run to put New Hampshire up 14-0 in the second quarter, but Ahmere Dorsey scored on a 4-yard run to get the Rams (0-3, 0-2) within 14-7 at halftime. Darrynton Evans rushed for three touchdowns, and Akeem Davis-Gaither blocked a 56-yard field goal attempt on the final play of Appalachian State's 34-31 victory over North Carolina on Saturday in the instate programs' first meeting in nearly 80 years. De metrius Taylor returned a fumble 20 yards for a key score, and Zac Thomas added 224 yards passing and another 57 on the ground to help the Mountaineers (3-0) beat a power-conference opponent for the first time since that unforgettable upset of Michigan 1 2 years ago. That one ended on a blocked field goal - and so did this one, with Appalachian State swatting away Noah Ruggles' kick at the buzzer that would have forced overtime."It wasn't going to be an upset," first-year coach Eliah Drinkwitz sai d. "We belonged on that football field today and we wanted to prove it." Evans scored on runs of 5, 2 and 3 yards while Chandler Staton kicked early field goals of 31 and 43 yards for Appalachian State, off to its best start since the 2010 team won its f irst eight games. Sam Howell threw three touchdown passes for the Tar Heels (2-2) - who trailed entering the fourth quarter for the fourth straight game. "We're continuing to try to find our identity, and our identity so far is, we start slow, we dig our selves in a huge hole and we come back and fight," coach Mack Brown said. "The first two weeks, we made the plays to win at the end of a game, and the last two weeks, we've run out of time and didn't have a chance to do the things we need to do." - Appal achian State/AP College Football

The glaring sun was the only thing that slowed down Alabama receiver Henry Ruggs III early, and that was only for an instant. Ruggs held up momentarily before pulling in his second long touchdown catch in the second-ranked Crimson Tide's 49-7 victory ove r Southern Miss on Saturday. He collected it and was off to the races again for a 74-yard score. Ruggs said it wasn't an underthrown ball by Tua Tagovailoa, who had another huge game. "The sun caught in my eye," he said. "The ball was right in the sun, s o I actually turned around to make sure I secured the catch instead of catching it over the shoulder."Tagovailoa passed for 293 yards and five touchdowns in just three quarters, including a 45-yarder and 74-yarder to Ruggs in the first nine minute s. He had his second straight five-TD game and the Tide (4-0) raced to a 28-0 lead in the first 19 minutes in yet another lopsided victory.
