2019 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Willie Eubanks III, Jr., LB, The Citadel,...Eubanks becomes the program's first player to take home the league's top defensive honor by both the coaches and media. He is just the second pla yer to win the honor by the coaches, joining Mitchell Jeter in 2015. He is the fourth player to earn the honor from the media. Brian Ruff (1975,1976), Scott Thompson (1986) and Kailik Williams (2016) are the previous selections by the media. The superlat ive comes just one day after Eubanks was tabbed a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award, honoring the top defensive player in the FCS.Eubanks closed out the season with 112 tackles, 63 solo, 11.5 tackles-for-loss, 4.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, o ne interception, one fumble recovery and 11 quarterback hurries. Eubanks recorded double-digit tackles in six of the 12 games this season, including three of the last four games. He posted a season-high 13 tackles and three quarterback hurries against El on. He recorded 10 solo tackles and forced a fumble on a sack against Samford. Against Chattanooga, Eubanks was credited with nine solo tackles, while adding four tackles-for-loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. - The Citadel Football

2019 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Ailym Ford, RB, Chattanooga,...Ford led the Mocs with 1,081 rushing yards this season. He was nine yards shy of the school freshman record set by Mike Smith in 1977 before being sidelined with an i njury on Nov. 9 at Samford. He did not play in the final two games of the year. Ford entered the year as the No. 3 ball carrier on the Mocs' depth chart, but quickly moved his way into a more prominent role in the offense. Six times he ran for over 100 y ards, including five in a row late in the season. His 108.1 rushing yards per game led all freshmen in the FCS, were second in the SoCon and No. 11 in the nation overall. He also tied for the team lead with nine rushing touchdowns. 2019 BIG SOUTH DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES): Bryson Armstrong, LB, R-Jr., Kennesaw State,...Armstrong is the second consecutive Kennesaw State player to be voted the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Aw ard as the nation's top defensive player, Armstrong recorded a team-high 73 total tackles during the regular-season -- including 44 solo stops. A member of the nation's fifth-ranked defense, Armstrong has totaled 10.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks, one int erception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season. He has helped the Owls lead the Big South in total defense (277.8), scoring defense (17.9) and rushing defense (90.8).Armstrong was the conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28 following his 10-tackle, 2.5-TFL, 1.0-sack effort over North Alabama. He led KSU in tackles five times - including three games with 10+, and his 73 stops are 28 more than his next-closest teammate. Armstrong also recorded a tackle-for-loss in ei ght of his 11 games played. Armstrong received six first-place votes and 19 points in the voting to edge out Presbyterian College linebacker Colby Campbell (16 points and seven first-place votes) and Monmouth linebacker Da'Quan Grimes (13 points and thre e first-place votes) for the defensive honor. - Big South Football

The Southern Conference's nine football coaches have selected their annual all-conference teams and specialty awards for the 2019 season. Wofford senior quarterback Jeo Newman was named the Offensive Player of the Year, while Citadel linebacker Willie Eu banks III was tabbed the defensive player of the year. Chattanooga running back Ailym Ford was named the freshman of the year, Wofford junior offensive lineman Blake Jeresaty earned the Jacobs Blocking Award and VMI's Scott Wachenheim was named the coach of the year. The coaches, who could not vote for their own players, selected all-conference first and second teams and all-freshman teams on offense, defense and special teams. Due to ties in the voting, there were additional spots at wide receiver on t he first team, offensive line on the second team and special teams on the all-freshman squad. - Southern Conference Football

For the second-straight season, a Nicholls student-athlete headlines the Southland Football All-Conference Teams as defensive lineman Sully Laiche is the conference's Player of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. Yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition. Laiche is one of seven superlative award winners announced Tuesday, along with Offensive Player of the Year Chase Fourcade (Nicholls) and Defensive Player of the Year Chris Livings (McNeese). Sam Houston State's Trace Mascorro is the Newcomer of the Year, and Central Arkansas' Tyler Hudson is the Freshman of the Year. The Offensive Lineman of the Year Award goes to Nicholls' PJ Burkhalter, and Southeastern Louisiana's Frank Scelfo is the Coach of the Year.Central Arkansas leads the way with 13 total all-conference selections, followed by Nicholls and Sam Houston State each with 12. Southeastern Louisiana placed 11 on the all-league teams while McNeese had nine honorees. Abilene Christian, Houston Baptist and Lamar garnered five picks each, and UIW, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin rounded out the teams with four selections apiece. In total, 17 honorees are returning all-Southland selections, led by Laiche and teammate Allen Pittman with their fourth picks. NOV 25 MISSOURI VALLEY CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: QB Nathan Mays, Youngstown State, 6-3, 220, Sr., Urbana, Ohio (Urbana),...Mays played the final snap of the Penguins' season finale against Illinois State on Saturday. Mays came on the field less th an three weeks following surgery after he suffered a career-ending injury against North Dakota State on Nov. 2. Mays left the Stambaugh Stadium turf that evening against the Bison on a golf cart. On Saturday, he put on his YSU uniform to be honored durin g Senior Day then sat on the bench for the next two-plus hours. With the Penguins' impressive 21-3 win over Illinois State clinched, YSU called timeout with 10 seconds left.Mays was carried to the Penguins' huddle by Myles Douglas and Matt Jones. He took a snap from Jones and with the assistance of two teammates took a knee as the clock ran out. It wasn't planned entering the game, but it happened. Mays went to Coach Pelini during the game and said if it's a possibility, can we make it happen. Co ach said "yes". Mays then dressed on the sidelines and went out to finish off his career under center and not on a golf cart. That's football. That's sports. Appalachian State receiver Corey Sutton announced on his Twitter page that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the 2019 season. Sutton was injured in the second quarter of the Mountaineers' 34-13 win over Texas State a t Kidd Brewer Stadium on Nov. 23. Earlier in the game, he scored on a 45-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Zac Thomas. "Dear App Nation. It hurts me to inform you that I will be out for the rest of the season due to an ACL tear." Sutton wrote on Twitt er. "I truly appreciate all the love and support you guys continue to bring. This will not be a setback, but a way to show my work ethic, mentality and how I'm really built. My teammates know I am their biggest supporter as we still have a lot of busines s to handle." Sutton, in nine games, caught 41 passes for 601 yards and seven touchdowns. The University of Central Arkansas Bears earned an FCS national seed and the Thanksgiving weekend off when the NCAA FCS Championship Bracket was announced on Sunday morning on ESPNU. The 9th-ranked Bears (9-3, 7-2) earned the No. 8 seed, meaning a first- round bye this Saturday and a second-round home game on Dec. 7 on "The Stripes" at First Security Field at Estes Stadium. UCA will host the winner of Southeast Missouri and Illinois State, which meet this Saturday in Cape Girardeau, Mo.The Bears, co-champions of the Southland Conference along with the Nicholls Colonels, will be making their fifth appearance in the FCS Playoffs, and third in the past four years. The game will be the third home playoff game for the Bears since 2016. UCA, which earn ed its second national seed in the past three years, beat Illinois State at Estes Stadium in the first round of the 2016 playoffs before losing at Eastern Washington. Hendon Hooker threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 25 Virginia Tech to a 28-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Hooker threw touchdown passes to Tre Turner and Damon Hazelton, and Virginia Tech's defense scored on a fumble return, as the Hokies (8-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) notched their sixth win in their past seven games. "I can't say enough good things about our guys," Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente said. "I felt that way about them early in the year, too, though. I re ally did. I'm enjoying every moment with them. I think they're a special group of young men. Dan Ellington threw two touchdown passes and Tra Barnett ran for 128 yards and a score as Georgia State cruised to a 28-15 victory over South Alabama on Saturday. Diego Guajardo's 34-yard field goal was the only score in the first quarter as South Alabam a took a 3-0 lead. The Panthers (7-4, 4-3 Sun Belt Conference) took the lead for good in the second quarter on Destin Coates' 6-yard TD run and Ellington's 5-yard TD toss to Devin Gentry. Barnett's 2-yard TD run was the only score in the third quarter an d stretched Georgia State's lead to 21-3. Ellington's 4-yard scoring toss to Roger Carter pushed the Panthers' lead to 28-3 just 7 seconds into the final period. Desmond Trotter had two fourth-quarter TD passes for the Jaguars (1-10, 0-7) -- a 20-yarder to Jalen Wayne and a 52-yarder to Jalen Tolbert. Ellington finished 21-of-28 passing for 208 yards with one interception for Georgia State. Carter finished with seven catches for 87 yards.
