Like everyone else who follows college football, LSU director of strength and conditioning Tommy Moffitt is waiting to find out if and when the games will go on after the greatest danger passes from the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike most people, Moffitt's job is to make sure LSU's players are physically ready to train for the 2020 season, whether it can be played on time or begins later than scheduled. "My biggest concern is player safety," Moffitt said Monday night on LSU's in-house radio show, "LSU Six ty." "It's my responsibility to make sure they're in shape before we start any form of training camp. "For me to do my job, I feel I would need at least a month to prepare."Moffitt said he and his staff meet once a week to discuss projects they're working on. One of the things they've been gaming out are various timelines depending on when the season would start. LSU is currently set to open the season Sept. 5 in Tiger Stadium against UTSA. "We need possible scenarios from June to August," Moffit t said. "I'm getting my staff and myself ready for whatever happens." Like the rest of the campus, LSU's athletic facilities are closed to its student-athletes except for some dining and medical support. Moffitt said he and his staff are in constant cont act with the football players, whether they are still in Baton Rouge or back in their hometowns, having crafted training plans to help them work out on their own. - Baton Rouge Advocate

As a former NFL coach himself, Nick Saban knows his role in the annual buildup to this month's NFL draft is one of advocacy and unflinching support. It's why the longtime Alabama head coach deflected recently when he was asked his assessment of former qu arterback Tua Tagovailoa's health status three weeks before the NFL's April 23-25 draft. "I'm not a doctor, and I can't comment on where Tua is and what he's doing, but we've tried to continue to do everything we can from a rehab standpoint," Saban said in an April 2 teleconference with reporters. "We think his rehab has gone extremely well, we think he's able to do things on a schedule relative to the way we all thought he would be able to do them and he's very positive and upbeat with where he is righ t now. That's really about all there is for me to say about that."Tagovailoa, who underwent career-saving surgery in mid-November to correct a right posterior hip fracture suffered in a Nov. 16 game at Mississippi State, has become a lightning rod for varying opinions regarding his health and status as a likely top-five pick in this year's NFL draft. Key among those has been former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi, who cited at least one team with a top-10 pick had taken Tagovailoa off their boa rd completely following a failed physical assessment. "What they saw … is they saw that it's more than one (injury)," Lombardi said earlier this week on his GM Shuffle podcast. "It's not just his hip. It's his ankle, it's his wrist. Maryland coach Mike Locksley, who served as Alabama's co-offensive coordinator in 2017 and offensive coordinator in 2018, hosted an Instagram Live show Friday evening in which Tagovailoa was a guest. Locksley said the questions about Tagovailoa "threw hi m off" and asked Tagovailoa about those who believe he is injury-prone. "I'm not playing badminton," Tagovailoa said. "I'm not on the swim team. This is a physical sport. You're gonna get hurt. That just comes with it. It's just very unfortunate I got hu rt each season. It's a part of the game. It's a contact sport. I can only control what I can control. I can't control that." Tagovailoa did seem to acknowledge there could be a risk for any team drafting him."I'll play for whoever takes me," he sa id when asked if he preferred a particular landing spot in the draft. "I just want to play, man. It doesn't matter what organization I go to, man. I just want to play. I look forward to playing under any organization that is willing to take a chance on m e." Tagovailoa also commented on his Thursday pro day hosted by his trainer, former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer, in Nashville that was videotaped and sent to NFL teams. Wide receivers always want to avoid those blindside hits, whether it's going over the middle of the field or, say, going to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. In his two years at the University of Florida, wide receiver Van Jefferson managed to avoid blind side shots on the field, but he got drilled by one - figuratively - in Indianapolis. During his physical exam before the start of the on-field drills, doctors discovered a fracture in his right foot. Just like that, Jefferson's Combine was kaput. "It was definitely frustrating," Jefferson said Thursday. "That's the dream that I had since I was a kid, being invited to the Combine and competing against some of those guys out there, just enjoying the process." Jefferson did not see it coming. Or feel it, f or that matter. "No, I never had problems with my foot," he said."My foot was never hurting me or bothering me. I never felt any pain in my foot. I was surprised that something came back like that (in the exam). "(The doctors) don't know when it h appened. I don't know when it could have happened. I have no idea. I was clueless. It just popped up on the screen. Everything happens for a reason, though." Jefferson underwent surgery after the Combine and was facing six to eight weeks of rehab. He rea ches the six-week mark Tuesday. "It's going well," he said. "I had my checkup (Wednesday) and it went well. A trio of former Auburn players will be among the 58 prospects who will virtually participate in the upcoming NFL Draft, the league announced Thursday night. While cornerback Noah Igbinoghene revealed earlier this week that he received an invite to atten d the draft remotely, he will be joined in that group by defensive tackle Derrick Brown and offensive tackle Prince Tega Wanogho. The NFL, which will conduct the draft completely virtually April 23-25, has not yet announced how the selected players will virtually participate in the event, but it plans to announce the details ahead of the three-day event that signals the league's marquee offseason production. Wanogho, a three-year starter at left tackle for Auburn, is also projected to hear his name call ed on the second day of the draft, with most analysts slotting him into the second or third round of the draft. - Birmingham News

Former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa held a planned pro day in Nashville on Thursday and will send videotaped footage of the workout to all NFL teams, the Washington Post reported. NFL Network reported Tagovailoa threw to former Tide teammate Jerry Jeudy, who shares an agent with Tagovailoa, as well as former Vanderbilt receiver Kalija Lipscomb. The pro day consisted of 55 scripted throws and another 20 "dynamic" passes, the reports said. Tagovailoa has been training in Nashville with former NFL qu arterback Trent Dilfer. Last month, Tagovailoa shared his first videos of him dropping back and throwing passes since November hip surgery. Tagovailoa's individual pro day comes on its planned date but was modified because of the coronavirus pandemic. NFL Network reported there were less than 10 people in attendance. Former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi said this week that two teams have failed Tagovailoa on his pre-draft physical, while another former NFL GM, Mike Tannenbaum, said last week i t would be "irresponsible" to draft Tagovailoa in the top 10 because of his perceived medical concerns. Tagovailoa's agent, Leigh Steinberg, pushed back against the concerns during a Thursday interview with a Miami radio station, saying the questions are overblown and doctors have said Tagovailoa is fine. - Birmingham News

Tua Tagovailoa is widely projected to be a Top 10 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, but one former general manager remains wary of the former Alabama quarterback's injury history. On his "GM Shuffle" podcast, former Cleveland Browns GM and longtime NFL ana lyst Michael Lombardi said sources have told him that two teams - including one drafting in the Top 10 - have "flunked" Tagovailoa on their pre-draft physical. Lombardi said it's not only Tagovailoa's hip injury - which ended his 2019 season in mid-Novem ber - that has pro teams wary, but also a "multitude of injuries" the former Crimson Tide star suffered during his college career."It's not just his hip," Lombardi said. "It's his ankle. It's his wrist. He broke his wrist the first day of spring b all one year. … He's brittle. He is brittle. You can't deny it." The broken wrist Lombardi appears to be referring to happened on the first day of spring drills in 2018, when Tagovailoa suffered what was alternately described as a hand and thumb injury (though not a wrist injury). The Alabama quarterback also missed game or practice time with two separate ankle injuries that required surgery and a knee injury during his time in Tuscaloosa. - Birmingham News

Though his college career was over, Johnston still wanted a shot to play in the NFL. Following surgery by renowned physician Dr. James Andrews a week after his injury, Johnston has been rehabbing his knee for the last six months and is getting closer to 100 percent. "I can run max speed right now and I'm about 90 to 95 percent in being able to change directions," Johnston said. "The doctor told me I won't be cleared until the first preseason game. But everything has gone great. I'm quarantined at home a nd my dad has helped a lot with my rehab and movement and lifting."Due to coronavirus shelter-in-place restrictions, Johnston has stayed home in China Spring to rehab and work out. He has been joined by his father, who is bringing 24 years of NFL experience as a strength and conditioning coach to Rhule's Carolina Panthers' staff. "Dad has been extremely valuable," Clay said. "He took over the rehab process and the training and knows what I need to do to come back from this ACL injury. He's been a huge blessing and I'll always be thankful for him. He does the same workout as me. At 64, he's a lion." Johnston hopes a team will select him during the NFL Draft April 23-25, but he'll be happy to go the free agent route if necessary. Wednesday was supposed to be the day Prince Tega Wanogho was waiting for. After a minor right knee injury unexpectedly forced him out of January's Senior Bowl, and a scope on that same knee prevented him from working out at February's NFL Combine and las t month's pro day at Auburn, the former Tigers offensive tackle was eager to put on a show for NFL personnel during a private pro day on the Plains. Then the coronavirus outbreak occurred. NFL teams took personnel off the road, and the league prohibited pre-draft visits between franchises and prospects. On college campuses, including at Auburn, facilities were closed as the NCAA implemented restrictions and the SEC instituted a ban of on-campus athletic activities, which was recently extended through at least the end of May. For Wanogho - a potential Day 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft - that meant a cancelation of his much-anticipated private pro day."It's really a bummer," Wanogho told AL.com by phone this week. "It's real disappointing with all the stuff going on right now, but at the same time, at the end of the day I'm a guy who actually stays positive. At the end of the day, there's going to be a lot of people who are actually being affected by this virus going on right now, and it's way bigger than me. The rising sophomore carried the ball 21 times for 112 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman. A Louisiana native, Hollins showed promise while also struggling with ball security last season. Perkins led the team in rushing last season, which means Hol lins and Wayne Taulapapa will be relied on heavily to produce on the ground. Hollins, who was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school, brings speed and elusiveness to the backfield. Taulapapa provides a slightly more physical style of running, and he excelled in short-yardage situations a season ago. With a large group of returning offensive linemen and a new starting quarterback, UVa's running backs should play a more important role in the offense's success. With Lamont Atkins, P.K. Texas was supposed to host a NFL job fair for its seniors on Wednesday. The Longhorns' annual pro timing day, which was scheduled for Wednesday, would have given players with professional aspirations a chance to work out in front of NFL scouts and repres entatives. But UT's pro day, along with similar senior showcases across the country, has been canceled and won't be rescheduled. Texas coach Tom Herman conceded recently that "it's really difficult to support those guys" with Austin's shelter-in-place or der in effect. "The best thing we can do as coaches is pick up the phone and give as good of recommendations as we can," said Herman, who spoke with New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on Sunday.Longhorns safety Brandon Jones, who started 35 career games, was among those who planned on working out for scouts on Wednesday. He'll instead spend the day in Frisco, where he's been getting workouts in on the football field at Plano West High School and at a friend's home gym. Baltimore running back Mark Ingram appeared on ESPN's "First Take" on Thursday to talk about Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, the NFL's reigning MVP. But the former Alabama All-American wound up talking about two other QBs, too. Like Jackson, Kansas Cit y Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is an NFL all-star. Ingram thinks Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is destined to be one, too. Tagovailoa is expected to be among the first players selected in the NFL Draft on April 23. Three teams among the first six in the current draft order are considered in the quarterback market - the Cincinnati Bengals at No. 1, the Miami Dolphins at No. 5 and the Los Angeles Chargers at No. 6. But Tagovailoa suffered a season-ending hip injury in the Crimson Tide's ninth g ame of the 2019 campaign. The NFL's reaction to the coronavirus crisis, with teams closing their facilities and banning personnel from traveling, has made it difficult for draft decision-makers to get the complete picture of Tagovailoa's health they woul d like.Ingram understands why teams would put a red flag on the quarterback's ability to stand up to the rigors of NFL play, but he thinks passing on Tagovailoa because of that concern would be a mistake. "Obviously, injuries and availability is a huge part of being a pro and being in the NFL," Ingram said, "so I can understand durability concerns. But I think every player has durability concerns. I just think the type of person he is, his accuracy, his accolades, the number of yards he threw for , the efficiency, even some mobility in the pocket (and) out of the pocket, I just think he has great potential to be a star in this league, and I think he will be a star in this league. "Durability's obviously a concern because availability is the No. 1 thing in the NFL. You've got to be available on Sundays, and I can understand why there is some concern with his durability, but I think he's recovering fine, I think he's moving good from the clips I seen earlier this week and I'm hoping a great recove ry for him. I believe that he's going to have a long, great career because I just think that's the type of person he is, that's the type of drive he has. I'm a Tua fan, man. If the coronavirus pandemic has made a mess out of 2020 college football preparations, Virginia football player Charles Snowden isn't sure that the Cavaliers will suffer. "I know coach [Bronco] Mendenhall loves consistency," said Snowden, an outside line backer coming off a breakout season in 2019. "I know this definitely throws him off a bit. I also know he loves challenges and creating chaos. Although he doesn't have any control over it, I think he's excited to see how we react." Snowden was in South F lorida when he learned that spring classes had been canceled as a result of the coronavirus and that classwork would be handled online."Initially, I thought it was going to be for a couple of weeks," he said. "I've been home, finding different way s to kind of work out, and talking to my coaches and teammates because they're trying to figure it out, too." Snowden had heard from team nutritionist Randy Bird earlier in the day Wednesday. "I personally don't have a strict diet," said Snowden, listed at 6 foot 7 and 235 pounds. "No weight is kind of bad weight for me right now." Physically, Snowden would like to weigh 240 pounds when the season comes around. "My sack number wasn't anywhere close to where I wanted it to be," said Snowden, whose five s acks ranked him third on the team behind Jordan Mack and Noah Taylor. As gyms close around Memphis to limit the spread of the coronavirus, Antonio Gibson is on a daily mission: Find a place to work out for the NFL Draft. Some days, it's the Memphis practice field at the Billy J. Murphy Complex. This week, it was Tom Lee Pa rk where the former Tigers wide receiver found a sand pit and worked out with teammates. "When I was younger, we always played in the backyard or the streets," Gibson said. "It was easier than this because it's more complicated. You just have to adapt." This is life now for Gibson and his former Memphis teammate Patrick Taylor Jr. How do you continue getting ready for April's draft when you can't use a facility or travel to meet with teams?Taylor's path became trickier after undergoing foot surge ry on March 10 for an injury that caused him to miss eight games last season. He said he'll be out 4-6 months as he continues to rehab back home in Houston. However, he wasn't worried about the surgery affecting his draft stock. When Bryce Hall was carted off the field last October at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, it was clear almost immediately that his Virginia football career had ended. Moreover, there had to be questions about the future of an All-ACC cornerback who had clearly attracted the interest of NFL scouts up to that point. Hall accepted an invitation to the NFL Combine but was unable to work out after earlier undergoing surgery for a collection of injuries, including a broken fibula, torn deltoid ligaments and a dislo cated ankle. "The first time I really got a prognosis was a week before I went to the combine," said Hall of an event that was held the last week of February."The doctors and my [personal trainer] said I should be 100% by training camp. "Within th e past couple of weeks, I started to see a lot of progress in terms of me starting to do some running, some cutting, some jumping stuff. Lately, that's been encouraging. For a while, I really had progressed slowly." "What I've been hearing from a lot of coaches is that they realize the status that I'm at," Hall said. "They've been paying attention to my film. "I've had meetings set up with coaches, so I feel like they've really got the chance to know me and what I'm about. I think, at the end of the day , the film speaks the most."
