Even after a 9-win season and third-place finish in the Big Ten East Division, Jim Harbaugh believes his team remains on the precipice of doing great things. Michigan's head coach appeared on "The TK Show" podcast with The Athletic's Tim Kawakami last we ek, another outlet that provided Harbaugh an opportunity to promote his open letter pushing for change to the college football and NFL eligibility models. But Harbaugh was also asked about his five-year run at Michigan, where he has amassed an impressive 47-18 record but is without a Big Ten title game or College Football Playoff appearance to show for it."It's been years of just completely pouring myself and my heart and soul into this job, coaching guys and developing players and graduating pla yers," Harbaugh said. "It's been great years. It's been great years." Then Harbaugh continued: "Always want to do better. Striving to be the best. Right now, I think our team is kind of on the cusp. Ohio State center Josh Myers has heard the litany of proposals for how a college football season might be staged this fall. The ideas range from a shortened season to games with limited fans in attendance. Further questions linger, too, about the sport's feasibility if most students are not on campuses for classes. But Myers made one point clear in a teleconference with reporters Thursday: He wants to suit up. "I would do anything to play this season," Myers said. "I don't know what I would do without f ootball, to be honest with you, but with that would come sacrifices, and I'm personally willing to make those sacrifices."The sentiment was shared by two Buckeyes offensive lineman at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has shut down athletic fac ilities at Ohio State and left no clear timeline for when workouts might resume. They were last at the school for practices in early March, since scattering across the country to rejoin families at home. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had a surprise for his mother on Mother's Day. The former Alabama All-American gave Diane Tagovailoa a Cadillac Escalade on Sunday. Tua Tagovailoa shared the gift presentation on his Instagram account on Sunday n ight. The fifth player selected in the NFL Draft on April 23, Tagovailoa is in line for a four-year, $30.275 million contract that will include a signing bonus of around $19.6 million. Tagovailoa headed for the NFL as Alabama's all-time leader in touchdo wn passes and the holder of the NCAA FBS record for career passing-efficiency rating at 199.4. When Boise State defensive tackle Sontane Lui sat out of the Las Vegas Bowl against the Washington Huskies, it was a surprise to many that Lui sat out of the game. Months after the end of the 2019 season, Lui sat down with KTVB to discuss the spinal inju ry that forced him out of football. As expected, the momentum from a 10-win season and a nationally televised primetime matchup against one of college football's premier programs proved to be a box office smash for the Syracuse football program last fall. The university drew an average att endance of 42,164 fans to the Carrier Dome in 2019, according to figures compiled by the NCAA. It's the highest mark since the 2002 season, when an average of 42,259 fans showed up for SU's six home games. Syracuse increased its average attendance by 5,1 21 fans from the prior season. Only seven programs saw a higher attendance jump in 2019.The figures are buoyed by a crowd of 50,248 that showed up for the early season home game against Clemson, the program's first home sellout since Donovan McNab b was taking snaps in 1998. A record number of new season-ticket sales also strengthened attendance figures, even as the team's performance waned through a 5-7 record. Penn State football could return sooner than most expect once the program gets the go-ahead from government and health officials that its safe to do so, head coach James Franklin said Wednesday on a teleconference with media. The NCAA's Football Oversigh t Committee has suggested a six-week period of practice before teams return to games, according to Stadium's Brett McMurphy. But Franklin believes that window could be shortened. Franklin said he could see a world where his team is ready to take the fiel d for a game a month after it returns to practice."People forget, very quickly we forget, that when I played college football and a lot of people played college football, you weren't there all summer," Franklin said. "You were at home, working out on your own. You'd show up and you'd be in training camp for three weeks or a month before the season started and you went and played. I think you definitely can do it under six weeks. I think you can do it in a month. Because that's how it was always k ind of run before." If Franklin's potential timeline was followed, that would mean his Nittany Lions would have to be back on campus Aug. 5 in order to play their season opener against Kent State on Sept. 5 as scheduled. - Centre Times

Prince Tega Wanogho hopes he serves as an example to youngsters in his native Nigeria after reaching the NFL. The Philadelphia Eagles selected the former Auburn offensive tackle in the NFL Draft on April 25. "I say it all the time: It's way bigger than m e," Wanogho told NBC Sports Philadelphia this week. "This is actually just not for me or my family, I would say my village. That's what it is. This is something I'm doing to help people back home, too, because I know there's so many kids back home in Nig eria who would like the same dream. Especially the fact of me being drafted, they see that right now they know they can do it. That's what I want to present to them someday -- just the chance."Wanogho came to the United States in 2014 to pursue ba sketball. But he switched to football at Edgewood Academy in Elmore and made another switch at Auburn from defensive end to offensive tackle. "Whenever you take pride in whatever you do, you're going to find a way," Wanogho said. "And for me, it's not ab out me starting football early or late, it's just the will to learn, to play, and that's my will right there. I want to play. I want to be able to show people what I can do. People don't understand that, so at the end of the day, it's not all about when you start or where you actually start, it's just the finish. That's what it is. And that's me. That's what I do. I'm the guy who's always going to finish. "I'm not going to lie. I'm still learning. A lot of players in the league, they're still learning. Rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will wear No. 1 for the Miami Dolphins. The fifth player picked in the 2020 NFL Draft on April 23, Tagovailoa wore No. 13 while playing at Alabama. He also wore that number while playing for Saint Louis School in Honolul u. But Tagovailoa couldn't wear No. 13 for Miami. The Dolphins retired that jersey number to honor quarterback Dan Marino. Marino played for Miami from 1983 through 1999 and retired as the NFL's career leader in passing yards and touchdown passes. Marino entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005 in his first year of eligibility.Marino's 13 is one of three numbers retired by the Dolphins. The others are the No. 12 of quarterback Bob Griese and the No. 39 of running back Larry Csonka. Tagovailo a revealed his new number via his Instagram account on Tuesday night. The Miami Dolphins kept their intention to draft quarterback Tua Tagovailoa hidden up until the former Alabama quarterback was selected with the fifth overall pick last week. Various reports in the weeks and months leading into the draft questioned wheth er the Dolphins were sold on Tagovailoa, and even Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn -- whose team picked No. 3 -- was not sure what the Dolphins would do. Through it all, Alabama coach Nick Saban was optimistic that Miami would make Tagovailoa the highest NFL-drafted quarterback for the Tide since 1948. "Based on the calls that I get and information that I get," Saban said in a video conference with South Florida media Thursday, according to the Palm Beach Post, "I was really, really hopeful that Miami would take him."Saban, though, was not completely confident in that actually happening. "I think he will be a great face of the organization there," Saban said. "I was just rooting for the guy. I felt so bad about him getting injured. Would those consequences of that injury affect his draft status dramatically? Probably as anxious as I ever was about a player getting drafted." When the Miami Dolphins selected Tua Tagovailoa with the fifth overall pick in last week's NFL Draft, it guaranteed the Hawaiian left-hander millions of dollars. But what if Tagovailoa could have made millions while staying for another season at Alabama? If the recent NCAA-endorsed plan for name, image and likeness was in place and allowed Tagovailoa to be paid to star in commercials, he could have according to those most bullish about the market for college athletes. Tagovailoa would have been well sui ted to cash in on his national recognition and ability to tap into multiple markets given his Hawaiian roots. Bob Dorfman, creative director of Baker Street Advertising, says Tagovailoa could have made "three to five million, easy" during his time at Ala bama. Andy Schwarz, an economist and partner at OSKR, believes "low millions" would have been possible for Tagovailoa though six figures was probably more likely early on.In talking to multiple sports marketing experts, a consensus emerges that it is players like Tagovailoa and Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence who stand to gain the most if the boldest aspects of the NCAA's proposed NIL plan come to fruition. (There is a lot of skepticism that they will, which we'll get to later.) Similar to the NFL where quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers reap the biggest endorsement deals, it will likely be the high-profile quarterbacks and Heisman contenders who brands will want to embrace. TCU coach Gary Patterson took great pride in seeing five players selected in the NFL draft last week, including multiple first-round picks for the first time since 1939. But Patterson also acknowledged the disappointment in finishing with a losing record with all that talent. The Horned Frogs went just 5-7 in 2019, missing bowl eligibility for just the third time in Patterson's 19 seasons. "From my standpoint, we were No. 1 in defense (in the Big 12), but we underachieved," Patterson said during a confe rence call with reporters Tuesday. Coach is as disappointed as anyone. They went through the expected growing pains of starting a true freshman quarterback in Max Duggan. And, the team battled injuries, including one of those NFL talents - right tackle Lucas Niang - missing the final fi ve games. Duggan also battled a finger injury the final four games. The list goes on, but Patterson isn't big on excuses. However, he acknowledged the challenges of winning at this level with an inexperienced quarterback. "You look across the nation, loo k at who played with a true freshman quarterback, who had a great year? If they did, congratulations to them," Patterson said. "From our standpoint, we're disappointed. (In six of the seven losses), we had a chance to come down and score to tie or win. A t the end of the day, we didn't. Few players broke out in the second half of Penn State's 2019 season like Brown did. He closed his redshirt sophomore season out as the team's best running back and looks to be the clear-cut starter heading into his redshirt junior year. Brown has a uniq ue blend of size, strength, speed and balance that will attract NFL teams, even in a world where his position has lost value. It's highly unlikely Brown becomes a surefire first-round pick because of the position he plays, but it's easy to see a world wh ere he becomes a second-round pick. - Centre Times

A rising senior, Snowden's physical traits should thrill NFL teams. Standing at 6-foot-7 and weighing 235 pounds, Snowden is a beast of a man. His frame still looks lean, and Snowden hopes to add a few pounds before the start of the next college football season. "Ideally I'd like to start the 2020 season in the low 240s," Snowden said. "Maintaining weight during the season has always kind of been my thing, so getting to the low 240s, that way, at the end of the season I can still be around 240." Snowden 's length and size led to a good junior season. He finished with 72 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He uses his length well to get into passing lanes. He recorded 11 passes defended as a sophomore. At his size, those numbers show he's capable of turning physical traits into on-field production. A senior season similar to his junior campaign should put Snowden squarely in the NFL Draft discussion. When people look back on the 2020 NFL Draft, TCU coach Gary Patterson believes offensive tackle Lucas Niang will look like a steal. The Kansas City Chiefs landed Niang with a third-round pick (96th overall) last Friday. "I'll be honest with you, if Lucas Niang stays healthy, I think he was a steal," Patterson said. Niang, 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, didn't allow a sack in his college career (1,027 career pass-block snaps). He played right tackle for TCU, but feels he has the versatility to play on the left si de at the next level if needed.Niang was regarded as one of the top offensive tackle prospects much of the season, but had his senior season cut short with an injury. He was limited to seven games in 2019, undergoing season-ending hip surgery in N ovember. Reports suggest he is making good progress from his hip surgery and Patterson believes Niang has a promising future.. "The guy is huge," Patterson said. "A very powerful run blocker. More powerful than the guys that have gone out the last few ye ars. He's a smart player. The biggest thing is he needs to stay healthy.
