When Ferrod Gardner got official word he had been approved for a sixth season of eligibility, allowing him to play one more year for the Ragin' Cajuns, he had no doubt. Gardner was in, all the way. "I just felt like it was another opportunity for me to g o ahead and better my game and better myself as a person," he said this week, "so I just definitely wanted to do it." Wow are the Cajuns ever glad he did. Linebacker Grant Stuard will be the first UH player to ever wear No. 0 in a game after the NCAA's rule change that allows players to wear that number. Back in 1972, linebacker Bubba Broussard attempted to wear the game. A few days before the season opene r, SWC director of officials Cliff Speegle informed head coach Bill Yeoman that only numbers 1 through 99 were allowed under NCAA rules, according to an account in the Chronicle. At the same time, linebacker Charles Evans had attempted to wear "00." Brou ssard instead wore No. 2 and Evans returned to his old No. 59. Stuard, a senior team captain, said he chose to wear No. 0 because it's the number of his favorite basketball player, Russell Westbrook. "Honestly, I always wanted to wear No. 0," Stuard said . Virginia Tech safety Devon Hunter has been suspended indefinitely amid reports the redshirt junior was arrested this past weekend and charged with strangulation of another, a Class 6 felony, and simple assault against a family member. Hunter was booked i nto Montgomery County (Va.) Jail on Sunday, was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon and continues to be held without bond, according to court records. His next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19. In Virginia, a Class 6 felony is punishable by a maxi mum of five years in prison. A misdemeanor assault conviction carries a maximum of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.Hokies Coach Justin Fuente announced Monday morning that Hunter, a projected starter, had been suspended indefinitely for violati ng team rules. He declined to be more specific about the infraction during a Zoom call with local reporters, other than to say the suspension was a stunning development. A felony triggers an automatic suspension, according to Virginia Tech's code of cond uct. Hunter was among the program's most highly regarded recruits, committing to the Hokies with the enticement of playing for legendary defensive coordinator Bud Foster. Duke center Jack Wohlabaugh announced Friday that he intends to play the 2021 season for the Blue Devils.The redshirt senior was lost for this season with a torn right anterior cruciate ligament sustained in a Sept. 1 practice. Wohlabaugh was elected a t eam captain by his Duke teammates. He said in a social media post that he plans to make an impact this season in ways off the field. "Although unable to be in the trenches with my teammates, I will do my best to help them be the best versions of themselv es every step of the way," Wohlabaugh's announcement said. The centerpiece for the new-look Georgia Tech offensive line is Jordan Williams. The highly recruited freshman from Gainesville is 6-foot-6 and weighs 330 pounds. As offensive coordinator Dave Patenaude said, "He's a really large dude." Williams will sta rt at right tackle on Saturday when the Yellow Jackets open the season on Saturday at Florida State. There will be the usual growing pains, but the big-bodied, long-limbed offensive lineman is the template the Yellow Jackets hope to duplicate at the posi tion in the future. Expectations for Williams are high. He was the only offensive lineman from the ACC included on the 247 Sports' Preseason All-America Freshman Team. He is far from a finished product, but his size gives him a huge advantage."For a big guy he can really move his feet," Patenaude said. "(Florida State) is going to be a good test. I don't think he's going to be overmatched physically. But over the course of the game, can he sustain and be ready to play 75 plays? He's been really g ood in camp. Coach (Brent) Key has done a great job with him." Williams' progress has also been helped by the presence of Ryan Johnson, a grad transfer from Tennessee who will start at right guard. Johnson (6-6, 310) played in 36 games and made 19 starts at Tennessee. "Ryan will help him through the game," Patenaude said. Coastal Carolina now has two wins over a Big 12 opponent in 12-plus months, and may have found its starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. Chanticleers coach Jamey Chadwell started Grayson McCall at quarterback in a surprise move in the sea son opener Saturday night, and the redshirt freshman led Coastal to its second win over Kansas in consecutive years. McCall accounted for more than 200 yards of offense and all five CCU touchdowns and led Coastal to a 28-0 lead en route to a 38-23 win ov er the Jayhawks at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. "We wanted to get off to a fast start and we did defensively and we did offensively," Chadwell told WRNN 99.5 FM. "In the first half we really played almost a flawless game." Coa stal's 12-7 win at Kansas last year was the program's first over an opponent from a Power Five conference. "Last year you could have said it was a fluke. There's no way you can say that this year," Chadwell said. McCall completed 11 of 18 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns, and added 73 yards and two scores on 11 carries. "I thought he played really well," Chadwell said. "I think he hit a little rut there in the second half. I think he felt a little pressure there because they were making a comeb ack...Zero turnovers, he ran our offense, helped us control the clock. I thought he did a really nice job for us. The Shrader-copter has spun its way back onto the field. Mississippi State sophomore Garrett Shrader's playing time was in jeopardy from the moment K.J. Costello announced his decision to transfer to MSU from Stanford. True freshman Will Rogers enrolling early and playing well in preseason training camp didn't help Shrader's cause either. But coach Mike Leach has found a way to get Shrader, who started four games at quarterback for Mississippi State last year, back between the white lines - at slot rece iver. Shrader infamously launched from the 24 yard line needing to make the 19 against Kansas State last year and was spun around before landing on the 20.The play earned his teammates' respect. Now he'll have more opportunities for the Bulldogs t o be bullish on him with the ball in his hands. Shrader scored two touchdowns in practice last week despite only lining up in the slot for three days. "He's looked impressive," Leach said. "He's got a sense of space and routes. He's tough to bring down. I've been kind of impressed with the way he's looked." Leach has a history of switching players' positions. Coastal Carolina might want to start scheduling a trip to Kansas every season. Grayson McCall threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores, the Chanticleers forced the Jayhawks into three early turnovers, and the coach Jamey Chadwell's bunch rolled to a 38-23 victory early Sunday. It was the second consecutive years that the young Football Bowl Subdivision program had won in Memorial Stadium. "Great win for our program," Chadwell said. "Just proud of the effort." He was proud of the Sun Belt , too. Louisiana bludgeoned No. 23 Iowa State and Arkansas State rallied to beat Kansas State earlier Saturday.By the time Coastal Carolina wrapped things up about 1 a.m. local time, its lightly regarded league was 3-0 against the mighty Big 12 wi th all the wins coming on the road. "We didn't want to let the Sun Belt down," Chadwell said. "Hopefully people back on the East Coast were awake to see it." There were no fans on hand for the Jayhawks' opener because of the coronavirus pandemic. Shai Werts threw a touchdown pass, and added a 41-yard TD run midway through the fourth quarter as Georgia Southern scored 21 straight points to beat Campbell 27-26 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The game was delayed 40 minutes because of lightning. Campbell listed 17 players and Georgia Southern had 16 players inactive for the game due to various reasons. Hajj-Malik Williams threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Kelsey to pull Campbell to within 27-26 with 15 seconds left, but Willi ams' threw an incomplete pass to Julian Hill on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt. Werts finished with 155 yards rushing and was 7-of-13 passing for 53 yards that included a 1-yard TD pass to D.J. Butler. Penn State football will be without its star tight end whenever it next takes the field. Junior tight end Pat Freiermuth will not return to play when the season begins, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The team already lost its star linebacker when Micah Parsons decided to forego his junior season and declare for the 2021 NFL draft amid uncertainty about when the Nittany Lions will take the field again during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Freiermuth, like Parsons, is widely pro jected to go in the first round of next year's draft. The star tight end accomplished plenty in his two years on the football field at Penn State.He was a reliable target for former quarterback Trace McSorley and redshirt junior Sean Clifford in o ne year with each starting quarterback. Freiermuth was a strong and physical blocker who didn't back down from opposing defensive linemen, while displaying astute skills as a pass-catcher and a runner after the catch. He finished his Penn State career wi th 69 receptions for 875 yards and 15 touchdowns in 26 games played. His 15 touchdown receptions tie him for ninth all-time at Penn State and leaves him tied with Mike Gesicki for most among tight ends in school history.
