Grayson McCall threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns to lead Coastal Carolina to a 52-23 victory over Arkansas State in both teams' Sun Belt Conference opener on Saturday. The Chanticleers are 3-0 -- including a victory at Kansas on Sept. 12 -- for the first time since 2015 after dominating time of possession by over 22 minutes. It was their first game since a win over Campbell on Sept. 18. Coastal Carolina completed a 94-yard drive that took over 8 1/2 minutes -- the longest drive in program history by both time and distance -- on McCall's 3-yard touchdown pass to CJ Marable with under minute left in the first half for a 24-14 lead. The Chanticleers added a nearly eight-minute drive to open the second half with McCall hitting Kameron Brown with a 3- yard score to lead 31-14. McCall, a redshirt freshman, was 20-of-29 passing, including a 72-yard score to Isaiah Likely. Jaivon Heiligh had 93 yards receiving and a score. When he was a high-school senior two years ago in East Texas and sorting through scholarship offers from more than 20 FBS programs, Tyree Wilson never pictured himself playing for Texas Tech. But Tech coach Matt Wells and defensive line coach Paul Randol ph changed Wilson's mind about that this off-season when the big defensive end became disgruntled at Texas A&M and considered alternatives. The Red Raiders are glad he did. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound sophomore showed Saturday in only glimpses how big an imp act he can make on their defensive front. In Tech's 63-56 overtime loss to No. 8 Texas, Wilson registered a sack, helped cause one and was credited with a quarterback pressure on another play. His combination of power and agility gave Texas offensive tac kles problems."We knew what we were getting once we got him to commit to coming here," defensive coordinator Keith Patterson said. "It's going to be exciting to watch his development, but he is definitely going to be a guy that we can impact the q uarterback with and do some things as we move forward." Wilson graduated two years ago from New London West Rusk, located roughly between and about a half-hour each from Longview and Tyler. College Station is only about three hours from Wilson's hometown , and he spent two years at Texas A&M, redshirting in 2018 and playing in 12 games last year. Ohio State football fans caught a brief glimpse of Jameson Williams as a freshman in 2019. Brief because he played sparingly behind the main rotation. Yet also brief because the St. Louis native's greatest asset - his speed - definitely played at this le vel. Williams turned one of his six receptions into a 61 yard touchdown. It was the second time he had done an Ezekiel Elliott impression, the first being when he broke the former Buckeye star's Missouri high school record in the 300 hurdles. That speed helped Williams earn a place in the OSU receivers room.To crack the rotation, he needs to prove himself as a complete receiver in the ongoing preseason. "I feel like I've been a lot more focused and got a whole lot better in everything - in the cl assroom, on the field," Williams said. "...I feel like it will all come together soon and show during the season." Williams came to Ohio State as a top-100 national recruit and the second major recruiting hit for the receiver room along with Garrett Wils on. Despite a statement from SEC commissioner Greg Sankey approving a number of intraconference transfers for 2020, Ole Miss safety Otis Reese is still not cleared to play. According to confirmation from an Ole Miss spokesperson, Reese's transfer request has still not yet been cleared by the NCAA. Reese transferred to Ole Miss from Georgia in January and has been seeking appeal since arriving. Sankey issued a statement on Wednesday evening in support of special case waivers for players in positions such as Reese's for this season. Reese is one of three high-profile intraconference SEC transfers this season. For the third time this week, Kansas State senior safety Jahron McPherson earned a national honor following his performance last week at No. 3 Oklahoma as he was named the Jim Thorpe Award Player of the Week, the award's organization announced Thursday. McPherson, who was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, was also named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week and Nagurski Player of the Week after he totaled 11 tackles - including one for a loss - a forced fumble and an interception as the Wildcats earned their first road win over a top-five ranked team in school history with a 38-35 victory. A native of Basehor, Kansas, McPherson became the first Wildcat since at least 2002 to post double-digit tackles, a TFL, a forced fumble and a n interception in the same game. His forced fumble, which was recovered by the Wildcats, led to a touchdown, while his interception came with 34 seconds remaining to seal the win. - Kansas State Football

Former UF All-American middle linebacker Brandon Spikes paid quite a compliment to linebacker Ventrell Miller on Twitter after Saturday's win, posting that Miller is going to be a better No. 51 at Florida than he was. "Definitely honored," said Miller, w ho recorded 15 tackles against Ole Miss and was named the SEC defensive player of the week. "I know some of the guys sent it to me and what was said, definitely an honor that he felt that way. So, definitely good for me."Miller said he met Spikes last season and has seen numerous highlights of his UF career, including his monster hit against Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno early in the 2008 UF-UGA game. "Yeah, he actually was coming to the games last year, so he used to coach us up on the si delines and stuff like that," Miller said. "So it was definitely good for him to send that to me. Music to my ears. "That highlight reel play of him and Knowshon Moreno, I saw that's what they were comparing my hit to. That's something they have around T he Swamp, just playing. They're going to take a look at it between 4-6 weeks and see what they do from there." Green e has started 25 of his career 36 games and has 131 career tackles with 9½ for loss. Damani Staley is set to start in place of Greene, with Mo Kaba behind him. UTSA quarterback Frank Harris will be a game-time decision for Saturday's matchup against UAB due to a knee sprain, coach Jeff Traylor said Monday. Harris left Friday's home win against Middle Tennessee during the second quarter and did not return. He wa s scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday morning, and Traylor called the outcome the "best news possible." Through three games, Harris has passed for 508 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and a 66.2 percent completion rate. He has also ru shed for 162 yards and five TDs. Josh Adkins, a Smithson Valley graduate and transfer from New Mexico State, replaced Harris against Middle Tennessee and completed 16 of 28 passes for 233 yards and a touchdown as UTSA won 37-35 at the Alamodome. Harris, a junior, appeared to jam his right knee into the turf when he was tackled at the end of a 20-yard run during the final minute of the first half. He played two more snaps but then began waving to the sideline as he jogged back toward the huddle, eventual ly falling to the turf. - Express-News

Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker could return to the lineup as early as this week. Hooker missed the season-opener after what coach Justin Fuente described as a "little scare" in relation to some medical testing that was done in recent weeks. Hook er was one of the 23 players who were unavailable to play in the opener. "There was a little bit of cause for alarm for further testing," Fuente said. "He hasn't practiced in a little while, but all that came back really well." Fuente didn't offer any ne w details about what kept Hooker sidelined on Monday during his weekly press conference and wouldn't say how many weeks of practice Hooker missed. The quarterback did speak to the media on Sept. 9.According to the ACC Network sideline reporter Kat ie George, Hooker was in quarantine until Friday, but it wasn't clear if he had tested positive for COVID-19. Student-athlete that test positive for the coronavirus are required to undergo EKG and other tests to assess symptoms of Myocarditis and must re ceive cardiac clearance from Tech chief medical officer Dr. Mark Rogers. "We haven't had him for a while, so he's had a really good fall camp I've been really pleased with," Fuente said on Monday when asked if Hooker was ready to play against Duke. Stetson Bennett's performance Saturday at Arkansas would be considered heroic in UGA football circles after he entered in the second quarter and sparked the Bulldogs' 37-10 win. It wasn't enough of a showing for UGA coach Kirby Smart to commit to him on Monday as the starter for this Saturday's 7:30 p.m. home opener against Auburn. Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels will be cleared from a knee injury, Smart said, but the starting spot will be decided throughout practice this week. "All I can tell you is w e're going to continue to work with all the guys we've got," Smart said. "And put the best guy in there that gives us the best opportunity to win football games." South Carolina starting linebacker Sherrod Greene will miss at least the next four to six weeks with a fractured hip, Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp said Tuesday. Greene, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior who had started 23 of the past 26 games for South Carol ina, was injured in the Gamecocks' 31-27 loss to No. 21 Tennessee Saturday night. Muschamp said Tuesday that Greene's injury was "unusual" and that Greene will not need surgery. Greene will get rechecked in about a month or so.
