Tech ran for 260 yards against a North Carolina team that allowed 108 rushing yards combined in the first two weeks. "He's becoming a really really good blocker just downfield, sealing edges," Tech running back Khalil Herbert said. "Makes it easy for me to run around. Shout out to the guys in the tight end room. They're doing a really great job." That was on display when Mitchell created the room Herbert, who leads all FBS running backs with 149.7 yards per game, needed on an 8-yard touchdown in the sec ond quarter. Herbert bounced to the outside as Mitchell drove defensive back Ladaeson DeAndre Hollins back 5-yards from the line of scrimmage with an impressive pancake block. It was a play Mitchell might not have been able to make early in his career."I'm still learning as I go on about how to block and the right techniques, just being able to block well is something I really wanted to get better at for a long time," Mitchell said. It wasn't a skill he was required to use much at Union High Scho ol where he spent most of the time on offense with the ball in his hands. He said it was a "big transition" once he first got to Blacksburg, and it's still a point of emphasis two years later. "It's very important, being both is going to be the next step in my development as a tight end," Mitchell said. "It's something that coach (James) Shibest stressed to us tight end, we got to be able to be both. Before we got out and catch (the ball), we got to be able to block and help the run game. Syracuse safety Andre Cisco, the first true freshman in program history to earn All-America honors, will forego his college eligibility and enter the 2021 NFL Draft. Cisco, who suffered a season-ending injury earlier this season, announced the news Tuesd ay evening. Cisco had been pegged as an early draft entry since earning All-America honors as a true freshman in 2018, when he tied for the national lead with seven interceptions. His knack for takeaways contined throughout his sophomore season and becam e his calling card throught his career, which abruptly ended moments before his 25th game on Sept. 26 against Georgia Tech when he collided with a teammate during warm-ups and suffered a lower-body injury. Cisco had surgery earlier Tuesday. "He doesn't h ave any pain or discomfort," his mother said Tuesday morning before the surgery. "He's walking. At the end of the day, that's what I'm happy about." Arkansas junior linebacker Levi Draper underwent successful surgery, his mother, Rustin Draper, said in a Twitter post Tuesday. The post did not specify the nature of Levi Draper's surgery, but a source said it was to repair a torn labrum suffered during the Razorbacks' season opener against Georgia. Draper has not played in Arkansas' past two games. "Would do anything to be healthy and be on the field with those boys, but I'm so proud to be (a part) of this group, wouldn't trade it for anything," Drape r tweeted following the Razorbacks' 30-28 loss at Auburn on Saturday. Draper transferred to Arkansas as a graduate earlier this year from Oklahoma, where he played primarily on special teams the past two seasons. After two weeks of quarterback play, Jordan Travis has proven to be one of Florida State's best offensive weapons. Travis made his first start against Notre Dame last Saturday and helped keep the Seminoles within reach in the first half. Travis threw for a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to Tamorrion Terry to give the 'Noles their first and, ultimately, last lead of the game in the 42-26 defeat at Notre Dame Stadium. Although the defense was lackluster, the offense has begun to show growth o n the back of its win two weekends ago against Jacksonville State. Travis has proved himself to be a formidable quarterback.And while just being a redshirt sophomore, the ceiling seems to only be getting higher after his first start. Though Travis suffered a hand injury late in the loss against Notre Dame, he is expected to be ready for Saturday's home game against North Carolina. FSU coach Mike Norvell said Travis practiced on a limited basis Sunday, adding that "everything is moving in a positi ve direction." Norvell was pleased with Travis' performance against the Irish. "His poise, his composure, some of the play-making ability that showed up through the course of the game was really impressive. And like I said in the opening, there are some plays he'd like to have back," Norvell said. "But I thought he did a great job in his first start and am excited to see him continue to build upon that with what he's going to be able to do here this week moving forward." - Times Union

In an undeniably young room, Bowman is the elder statesman (and a guaranteed starter). The former UW walk-on produced a quietly prolific 2019 season - stacking up 34 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception in 13 games. And he did it while also shifting inside on passing downs. "I'm just a defensive lineman, honestly," Bowman said, when asked to define his role. "I play any position on the line and always try to make things happen and always try to be explosive wherever I'm at. You can literally put me anywhere."In a shortened senior season, the Huskies might take him up on that offer. At 280 pounds, Bowman is quick enough to rush the passer and strong enough to stuff the run. And nasty enough to portray the attitude Kwiatkowski wants from his outside linebackers. "The legacy I want to leave is that we're the most physical dudes on the team," Bowman said. "We want to be real hard-nosed, bad, nasty dudes. That's just how we're all going to be in that roo m. Under Coach K, it's easy to be like that, because that's the mentality that he brings, and we manifest off that energy and all our dudes are like that. Syracuse preseason All-American defensive standout Andre Cisco will miss the rest of the season, coach Dino Babers said Monday toward the end of his weekly news conference. Cisco was inserted as the rover in the Orange's new 3-3-5 defensive scheme and ha d 11 tackles and one interception in the two games he played. He was injured in a freak collision with a teammate in pregame warmups for the Georgia Tech game in the Carrier Dome just over two weeks ago and hadn't played since. Cisco, a junior safety fro m Long Island, entered the season with 12 interceptions, tops among returning players in the Football Bowl Subdivision. - AP College Football

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis provided a much-needed spark for a lethargic Seminoles offense during his first career start, but it wasn't enough. The improved Seminoles suffered their third loss of the season, falling 42-26 on the road Saturday to No. 5 Notre Dame. Travis combined for 300 total yards of offense, scoring two touchdowns, but a poorly thrown ball that was intercepted in the end zone midway through the fourth quarter squashed a late chance to cut into the Fighting Irish's lead. "T here were some bright moments, but we didn't get the job done," FSU coach Mike Norvell said.While the offense showed signs of life, the FSU defense didn't have an answer for Notre Dame's ground game, which amassed 353 yards and four touchdowns. It was the most rushing yards against a Seminoles team since Notre Dame rushed for 365 yards on Nov. 10, 2018. Tailbacks Kyren Williams (185 yards) and Chris Tyree (104 yards) combined for 288 of the 353 yards with touchdowns of 46, 1 and 45 yards. The Fig hting Irish finished with 554 yards of total offense, the most allowed by an FSU team since Boise State amassed 621 yards on Aug. 31, 2019. A group of FBS head coaches was less convinced Alabama is the No. 1 team in the country after Saturday night's record-setting 63-48 win at Ole Miss. The Tide lost nine of its 14 first-place votes from last week's coaches poll, but remained No. 2 in Sunda y's version of the poll. Alabama held onto five first-place votes as Clemson strengthened its grip on No. 1 with 55 of the 62 possible votes. Ohio State, No. 5, continued to receive first-place votes from two coaches. In the Associated Press poll, Alabam a lost six of its eight first-place votes from last week. It remained No. 2 with two first-place votes, ahead of No. 3 Georgia, which received one first-place vote. Temple Football head coach Rod Carey announced that two more players earned single-digit honors. Linebacker William Kwenkeu switches from number 35 to number 4 while defensive tackle Ifeanyi Maijeh will now sport the #9 jersey after changing from his chi ldhood favorite #88. A Temple tradition that was originally instituted by then head coach Al Golden in 2009, the awarding of single-digits has become one of the most symbolic in all of college football. The toughest players, on and off the field, as awar ded by their teammates, has become an identity and badge of honor to those who are deemed "Temple Tuff." In fact, several other college football programs have adopted the tradition.Maijeh, a redshirt junior from New York, earned first team All-AAC and All-ECAC honors last season after finishing eighth in the conference in sacks per game (0.60). In addition to that, he recorded 6.5 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, and five QB hits, all numbers that ranked top three on the team. This year, Maijeh starts the season in the spotlight as he earned preseason All-America accolades and was listed on watch lists for the Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy, and the Outland Trophy. "It's truly an honor, I've always wanted to be a single-digit since I was a fresh man," said Maijeh. "I knew what it stood for and respected the people who wore it. Journey Brown is in unfamiliar territory. When the redshirt junior running back first arrived at Penn State in 2017, Saquon Barkley was putting the finishing touches on one of the most exciting careers ever by a Nittany Lion running back. Then, in 2018, it was Miles Sanders who led the Penn State running backs room with an All-Big Ten season. Even last year, Brown wasn't the featured back right away in a crowded rotation. Now, Brown is the oldest member of a position group that is made up of himself, tw o sophomores and two freshmen. And after bursting onto the scene at the end of 2019 by rushing for 593 yards total in the Nittany Lions' final five games, he knows his younger teammates will look to follow his lead this fall."I'm an old head and t hese young guys kind of look up to me," Brown said last week on a Zoom call with reporters during Penn State's virtual media days. "I got them calling me, texting me, asking me questions and stuff. And for me to be able to answer those questions, I got t o know it myself and prepare for it myself." Central Michigan starting offensive tackle Luke Goedeke underwent knee surgery and will miss the 2020 season. Coach Jim McElwain shared the news with reporters during his Webex press conference Oct. 5. "He's gonna miss this season," McElwain said. "The surgery went great, he's in really good spirits." Last season, Goedeke started all 14 games for the Chippewas at right tackle and was the team's highest graded player according to Pro Football Focus. He committed just five penalties throughout the season and played a large part in CMU having a pair of 1,000-yard rushers in Jonathan Ward and Kobe Lewis. Goedeke came to Central Michigan in 2018 as a walk-on after one season at UW-Stevens Point. - Central Michigan Life
