11/22/20 - SS Devon Hunter, rSr/2022, Virginia Tech + More +   Suspended Virginia Tech safety Devon Hunter made his initial court appearance Thursday and waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Hunter appeared before Judge Robert Viar in the Montgomery Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court as a result of his arrest in September on multiple assault charges. Viar accepted the request and the case will be presented to a grand jury Jan. 26. Before signing an affidavit acknowledging he understood the request, Hunter made the sign of the cross. He was represented by Patrick Kenney, a Roanoke attorney, and accompanied at the hearing by his mother. Kenney declined to comment on the case after the hearing. 11/21/20 - QB JT Daniels, rSr/2024, Rice + More +   JT Daniels made quite a debut between the hedges, throwing for 401 yards and four touchdowns as No. 13 Georgia held on for a 31-24 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday night. Playing for the first time since the 2019 opener with Southern Cal, Daniels became the third quarterback to start for the Bulldogs (5-2, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) this season. It looks like they've finally found their guy. The transfer from USC delivered one big play after another, capped by a 40-yard touchdown pass to Kearis Jackson that broke a 24-24 tie with 9:50 remaining. What made it more impressive: Jackson and George Pickens had dropped potential TD passes on back-to-back plays, and a holding penalty left Georgia with third-and-20. But Jackson slipped behind the secondary in the middle of the field, and Daniels spotted him to finally finish off pesky Mississippi State (2-5, 2-5). Daniels became the first Georgia quarterback to pass for more than 400 yards since Aaron Murray against Auburn in 2013. Freshman Jermaine Burton was Daniels' favorite receiver, hauling in eight passes for 197 yards - including TD catches of 18 and 48 yards, no to mention another grab of 49 yards. Burton had just 130 yards receiving through the first six games of the season as Georgia struggled to get its passing game going while Daniels watched from the bench. 11/21/20 - ILB Jake Hansen, rSr/2022, Illinois + More +   Lovie Smith didn't move Jake Hansen from inside linebacker to outside linebacker because of any shortcomings on Hansen's part. Even with his appearance in the season opener against Wisconsin shortened by injury, Hansen compiled 22 tackles, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery as an inside linebacker during Illinois football's first three games of 2020. Yet Hansen was told he'd be deployed differently in preparation for last week's game at Rutgers. The result? More dominance from the 6-foot-1, 230-pound senior. Specifically 15 tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, one pass breakup and one interception in the Illini's 23-20 victory over the Scarlet Knights. "It's kind of a natural transition just because I played it all last year," said Hansen, whose 10 career forced fumbles have him tied him for third in Illinois history. Strong was 24-of-38 passing for 336 yards with one interception and Doubs - who scored on catches of 33, 61, and 59 yards - finished with five receptions for 172 yards. Strong had a string of 299 consecutive passes without an interception snapped. It is the second-longest streak of its kind in Mountain West Conference history. Fresno State's David Carr set the record of 306 in 2013. Doubs has eight touchdown catches, including one in each game, this season. The junior came into the year with six career TDs. 11/11/20 - RB Journey Brown, rSr/2022, Penn State + More +   Penn State running back Journey Brown says he has a heart condition that is forcing him to give up football. Brown posted Wednesday night on Twitter that he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes heart muscle to become abnormally thick and can make it more difficult to pump blood. Penn State coach James Franklin told reporters Brown's condition was not COVID-19 related, but it was discovered in September during "a routine COVID test." "It's heartbreaking," Franklin told reporters.
