FEB 22 CAA FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Percy Agyei-Obese, Sr., RB, James Madison (Frederick, Md./Oakdale),...Playing just two quarters, Agyei-Obese rushed for a team-high 116 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries in James Madison's 52-0 vic tory over Morehead State. The senior broke off a 55-yard run in the third quarter and later found the end zone from three yards out. It was the seventh career 100-yard rushing effort for Agyei-Obese and part of 369 yards on the ground by the Dukes in the win over MSU. - Colonial Athletic Association Football

Latrele Palmer and Jawon Hamilton each rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Percy Agyei-Obese gained 116 yards with a score and James Madison opened the unusual spring football season with a 52-0 blanking of Morehead State on Saturday. The Dukes, 2019 FCS ch ampionship game runners-up, pounded Morehead State with 556 yards of offense to 98. JMU gained 369 yards on the ground and went 6-for-6 in the red zone. Lindsey Scott Jr. and Kohen Granier each passed for a pair of touchdowns and Nicholls State opened the season with an 87-3 win over Division II Lincoln (Mo.) on Friday night. It was a program record for points in a game and the largest margin of victory for a Southland Conference team since 2009. Eight players scored on a touchdown run for the Colonels, who finished with 234 yards rushing on 42 carries. Dai'Jean Dixon had five catches for 80 yards and a TD, Dontaze Costly caught three passes for 48 yard s and two scores, and Tevin Bush had four catches for 48 yards and a touchdown and ran for a score. Starting left tackle Christian Darrisaw announced he was leaving early for the NFL, defensive stalwarts Rayshard Ashby and Jarrod Hewitt opted to pass on the COVI D-related extra year of eligibility from the NCAA and multiple starters transferred. Fans grew increasingly anxious about what starting tight end James Mitchell was going to do as they counted down the days to 2021. Mitchell posted a video on social medi a to announce he was coming back on Dec. 29, but told reporters on Tuesday that he had already made up his mind a week earlier.Mitchell said it was a pretty straight forward process that started with putting his name into the NFL college advisory committee for feedback. National Signing Day might have passed last week, but that hasn't stopped Marshall football head coach Charles Huff from pressing forward. As Huff stated previously, there are no days off in recruiting - something he showed on Wednesday as a high-major t alent committed to the Thundering Herd out of the transfer portal. Clemson's LeAnthony Williams, a 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back, announced in a message on social media that he would spend his last two seasons with at Marshall. Clemson lost another player Tuesday night as cornerback LeAnthony Williams entered the transfer portal. Williams, who just completed his redshirt junior year, appeared in 11 games in 2020. He had 12 tackles. The Georgia native signed with Clemson for the class of 2017 as a four-star recruit. He picked Clemson over Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and others. Williams is the fifth Clemson player to enter the transfer portal since the Tigers lost to Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl, joining Jordan Williams, Nyles Pin ckney, Mike Jones Jr. and Kaleb Boateng. - The State

Suspended Virginia Tech defender Devon Hunter's case is moving forward. A trial is set in Montgomery County Circuit Court for Aug. 30-31, according to his attorney Patrick Kenney. Kenney declined to comment on the case. A grand jury in January indicted H unter on a felony charge of strangulation to cause wound or injury. Hunter is also facing a separate misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member charge, but that's considered an ancillary misdemeanor and will move forward in the same manner as the felony offense. - Roanoke Times

In each of the last two years, the Colorado football team has gone into a season without much previous experience at running back. Next fall, the Buffaloes could be loaded with experience at the position. Last week, head coach Karl Dorrell said junior Al ex Fontenot has "a clean bill of health" after missing last season with a hip injury. A 6-foot, 205-pound back from Richmond, Texas, Fontenot led the Buffs in rushing in 2019 with 874 yards and five touchdowns on 185 carries. He also caught 27 passes for 122 yards. Without him last year, the Buffs discovered a star in sophomore Jarek Broussard, who ran for 895 yards and five touchdowns on 156 carries in only six games. He also had nine catches for 65 yards and was named the Pac-12 offensive player of th e year. Looking ahead to the 2021 season, the Buffs could have both of them as weapons on offense. - Daily Camera

Gophers junior tight end Jake Paulson has decided not to return to the football program. Paulson played 27 games for Minnesota, totaling seven receptions for 87 yards and one touchdown. While Eku Leota did not play in the Citrus Bowl, he was on the roster of the team that most recently beat Auburn, the Northwestern Wildcats. Leota played eight games in 2020 and while he made just 13 tackles, he recorded four sacks and was named to the A ll-Big Ten third team. In his two seasons as a Wildcat, he recorded 6.5 sacks. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end announced Saturday that he planned to graduate transfer to Auburn. Leota is originally from North Carolina. He played just two seasons at Northwestern, one of which does not count against his eligibility. "A graduate transfer here but a guy that's all about the fit, the culture and things that we talked about here, his development, being part of this program and wanting to be here," Harsi n said. "It was good to get to know him and his family. We're looking forward to him being a guy on the edge for us that can provide that pass-rush. Jeremy Ruckert and Luke Farrell combined to give Ohio State football one of the best tight end tandems in the Big Ten in 2020, and arguably one of the best in the nation. Farrell is moving on, meaning Ruckert should dominate the tight end usage this fall . Yet as shown with him and Farrell the past three seasons, playing a slew of snaps will not necessarily result in an abundance of passing targets. Ruckert unquestionably enjoyed his best season in all facets in 2020, especially in terms of his blocking. He totaled only 13 receptions in eight games, but made the most of them with 151 yards and five touchdowns. Despite seemingly solid NFL potential, Ruckert opted to come back for his fourth season. Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Wilson thinks Ruckert can improve as a receiver. He thinks Ohio State can get him the ball more. Will either actually happen in 2021? In the days leading to Wisconsin's game against rival Minnesota, offensive coordinator Joe Rudolph said he was optimistic injured senior wide receivers Kendric Pryor and Danny Davis would eventually choose to return to UW for the 2021 season. Pryor annou nced last month he would be back next season and Monday night Davis joined him by announcing he would return as well. The NCAA ruled before the season that players who participated in 2020 would not lose a year of eligibility. Davis played in only two g ames last season. He suffered an apparent concussion in UW's second game, a 49-11 victory at Michigan. Pryor played in only three games. - Journal Sentinel

Cal senior center Michael Saffell was named the 2020 Pac-12 Football Scholar Athlete of the Year the conference announced Tuesday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports sponsored by the Pac-12, was established to honor collegiate student -athletes that are standouts both academically and in their respective sports disciplines. Saffell becomes the fourth Cal player to win the award since its inception in 2007 and the second in the last four seasons following placekicker Matt Anderson in 2 017. Cal's other winners were Alex Mack (2008) and Mike Mohamed (2010). Saffell earned his bachelor's degree from the Cal's Haas School of Business in three-and-a-half years in December of 2020 and had a 3.62 undergraduate grade point average. He was acc epted into the university's Master of Information and Data Science program, which he began in January of 2021. - Bear Insider

Auburn is turning to the transfer portal to bulk up its defensive line. Former Northwestern defensive end Eku Leota committed to Auburn on Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Leota just completed his sophomore season with the Wildcats. Leota appeared in ei ght games for Northwestern in 2020 and racked up 13 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, four quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. Leota contributed to a Northwestern defense that ranked fifth in the nation by only allowing 15.9 points during a season in which the Wildcats went 7-2. - Opelika-Auburn News
