Peyton Powell's Rutgers career may be over without a single regular season snap. The defensive back is not currently a member of the program, coach Greg Schiano said Wednesday after the first practice of training camp at the Marco Battaglia Complex in Pi scataway. But Schiano did not rule out the possibility the Texas native could return at some point. Powell, who signed with Rutgers as a splashy transfer in Dec. 2019, did not appear in any games last fall. The former four-star athlete recruit from famed Permian High did see time at safety in May's spring game."Right now, he's not part of the team," Schiano said. "We'll see if he does become part of the team. But as we speak, he isn't on the roster." Schiano also announced nose guard Robin Jutwre ten, who played in eight games last fall, has medically retired. He will remain with the team as a student assistant. And Temple defensive back Christian Braswell will not play this season after undergoing knee surgery. "It's a shame, because [Jutwreten] is a great person, a great hard worker," Schiano said. Redshirt senior running back Clint Ratkovich has already made a large impression on NIU since transferring from Western Illinois University. Ratkovich was twice named to the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference First-Team and averaged 53.3 yards from scrimmage over the course of three seasons with the Leathernecks. The Louisville Sports Commission has named him to the 2021 Paul Hornung Award Watch List, an award given to the most "versatile" playing in FBS football. The versatility is what drew Head Coach Thomas Hammock to bring on Ratkovich during the offseason. "What stands out is his versatility," Hammock said in a Jan. 16 Northern Star article. "Western Illinois used him in a lot of different ways. He's a great runner, great receiver and great b locker. That allows him to be used in many different formations, and it's great to have chess pieces you can move around like him." - NIU Northern Star

Johnny Langan is still listed as a quarterback on the training-camp roster distributed by Rutgers officials Wednesday. But the junior out of Bergen Catholic could've been listed the way some recruits are pegged when they arrive without a clearly defined position: as an athlete. "He's a quarterback but he's also a multi-positional player," Schiano said. "So he can line up at wideout, he can line up at tight end, he can line up at running back. In different packages he'll line up in different spots. That' s a good weapon to have."Take the opening day of Rutgers' camp for example: Langan took repetitions with the tight ends and, unlike the five other quarterbacks on the roster, he didn't wear a green (non-contact) jersey. "He's 'Johnny Offense," Sca rlet Knights quarterback Noah Vedral said. "He's a really big tool for us so we want to use him. His role is as diverse as ever." After starting the final eight games at quarterback for Rutgers in 2019, Langan emerged as a jack-of-all-trades performer la st season in offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson's scheme. In addition to throwing for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 10-for-13 passing, Langan rushed for a team-high four touchdowns and his 201 rushing yards were second-best on the team. Clemson is returning a deep group of wide receivers this year, and Justyn Ross could be the proverbial cherry on top. The Tigers have yet to announce the redshirt junior's medical clearance, though it's expected that Ross will get the green light soon. T he anticipation of Ross getting back onto the field has been building, and no one is feeling that more than the man himself. Ross has been chomping at the bit since spring - where he was limited to non-contact practice - according to Clemson wide receive rs coach Tyler Grisham.Summer reports from player-led practices indicate he's back to form. "The guys talk, 'I mean, coach, we can't guard him,' " Grisham recalled players telling him about Ross. "We can't guard him, one-on-ones. I can't wait to s ee him back out there competing." Ross sat out the 2020 season after undergoing spinal surgery due to a congenital fusion. Andrew Booth was one of the highlight-worthy pieces of Clemson's defense last year. He had four starts as a sophomore in 2020, making athletic play after athletic play. The Georgia native ended the season with 30 tackles, four pass breakups, two intercep tions, a quarterback sack and a 21-yard fumble he returned for a touchdown. Booth sparked at different points last year, including the outstretched pass breakup he had against Miami and the one-handed interception grab against Virginia. As great as those were, cornerbacks coach Mike Reed needs for him to be more of a flame for the defense. "He's got to take the next step to be a consistent player," Reed said. USC wide receiver Bru McCoy was arrested on July 24 on suspicion of felony intimate partner violence with injury, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed on Monday. McCoy, 21, was placed on $50,000 bail and released from jail the same nigh t as his arrest. Police responded to the incident around 5:30 p.m. that evening. No charges have been filed against McCoy at this time, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office confirmed.In a statement when contacted about the arrest, USC athletics said that McCoy has been temporarily suspended from team activities. "USC does not condone violence of any kind. We are aware of the situation, and USC's Office for Equity, Equal Opportunity, and Title IX is reviewing it," the statement from U SC read. "Because of federal student privacy laws, we are unable to share additional information at this time." McCoy is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24. McCoy enrolled at USC in 2019 for the spring semester after graduating early from Mater Dei. Soon after, he transferred to Texas and participated in spring practice with the Longhorns. Healthy and ready, the super-senior wide receiver will bring a lethal component back to the field. USC football's near-unthinkable post-Memorial Day transfer successes became official Tuesday night when the program announced the arrivals of Santa Ana Mater Dei wide receiver Bru McCoy and Bellflower St. A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson conf irmed McCoy was arrested on July 24 at 5:30 p.m. on suspicion of intimate partner violence with injury. The violation, listed under California Penal Code section 273.5(a), pertains to a person who "willfully inflicts corporal injury resulting in a trauma tic condition" upon a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant or dating partner.McCoy was released that same night on $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 24. No further details about the incident were immediately available. After a tumultuous start to his college career that included a back-and-forth transfer saga and a mysterious illness, McCoy was expected to finally emerge this season as one of the top options in a high-octane USC passing game. Last season, he caught 21 passes f or 236 yards and two touchdowns, positioning himself for a breakout season in 2021. UCLA defensive back Quentin Lake missed most of spring camp but is back healthy to start for summer. Lake was dealing with a minor leg injury that kept him out of the spring showcase and the practices leading up to it. "For me, it was like a business dec ision," Lake said. "I didn't want to go out there and hurt myself even more." The redshirt senior made the most of the opportunity by providing guidance and advice to some of the younger players on the roster. Lake has missed time during previous UCLA se asons to deal with his health. He missed eight games in the 2019 season with a wrist injury, returning in time to play in the season finale against Cal. He worked his way back from the injury practicing with a huge wrap on his right hand, with the end ba lled into a club.He was also among the players who missed games last season due to COVID-19 safety protocols. Lake will help lead an experienced secondary after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to all players as a result o f the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Agrueling nine-week summer conditioning period came to an end Friday morning for the Virginia football team when redshirt senior defensive lineman Mandy Alonso pulled a sledgehammer over his head and slammed it down to "break the rock." Teammates showere d Alonso in Gatorade at the center of the McCue practice field, enjoying a moment of celebration after an offseason focused on hard work and improvement.Alonso, who opted to return for a final season of eligibility, was chosen as the player to bre ak the rock thanks to a productive offseason. "Mandy is unbelievable," junior linebacker Nick Jackson said. "If you could watch him every workout, you'd be in awe." Alonso is among the contingent of players that UVa coaches want to take a step forward. T he team returns key upperclassmen at nearly every position, but the Cavaliers went just 5-5 last season and ended the year with a disheartening 33-15 loss at Virginia Tech.
