Coming off an OVC Championship and its first FCS Playoff victory, UT Martin has been picked as the preseason football favorites in the Ohio Valley Conference for the 2022 season. The Skyhawks picked up 10 of a possible 14 first-place votes in a poll of l eague head coaches and communications directors. It marks the first time the Skyhawks have been picked the preseason favorites since joining the league prior to the 1992 season. UT Martin totaled 70 points to finish ahead of Southeast Missouri (59). Murr ay State (51) was tabbed third, just ahead of Tennessee State (46), who also picked up a first-place vote. The poll was rounded out by Tennessee Tech (29), Eastern Illinois (20) and Lindenwood (19).This season, the 75th year of the Conference, the OVC welcomes Lindenwood and has Murray State as an affiliate to comprise the seven-team league. Six of the seven teams will play five conference games that count in the league standings, with Lindenwood, who joined in February, playing four games that c ount in the standings (and challenging Eastern Illinois in a contest that counts as a non-conference game). In addition to the League schedule, OVC schools will collaborate with the Southland Conference in a non-conference scheduling alliance for 2022 an d 2023. Beginning in 2023, the OVC and Big South Conference begin an agreement to create an association between its football member institutions. - Ohio Valley Conference Football

Know where to be, what to do and, most importantly, how to move on from a mistake. Don't. Get. Flustered. Maturity - that's what new Nebraska cornerback Tommi Hill needs, according to his position coach. If Hill grows up in Husker training camp, NU defen sive backs coach Travis Fisher can predict where Hill's career is headed. 'He's going to be an NFL player if he don't mess it up," Fisher said on Husker Sports Radio on Thursday night. "It's one thing to say those types of things about kids before they a ctually put the work in, but just the potential I see in him - with his movement skills - he's just got to put the total package together to be that guy." Fisher called Hill, a 6-foot, 200-pound Arizona State transfer, an athletic "freak" who beats himse lf up too much after a bad play.Competitors are like that, Fisher intimated, but college football moves just too fast in an era of no-huddle offenses for Hill, or any other DB, to get stuck in their feelings. "That's why Myles Farmer and Quinton N ewsome are so important in the secondary," Fisher said of his two returning starters from the Atlanta area. "Because they can help out so much with that - getting guys like Tommi, with that kind of skill, to have the mindset of guys who have been here." Fisher said Newsome, 6-1, 180, will get pushed at corner by Hill and 6-4, 195-pound Braxton Clark, Fisher said, but it's clear, both from spring camp and Newsome's upward trajectory, that his job in NU's secondary seems secure. - Lincoln Journal Star

Air Force's football rivalries with Colorado State and Wyoming will remain intact under future Mountain West schedules in the post-division era. The conference announced opponents for the 2023-2025 seasons on Thursday, revealing what the schedule structu re will be when the league scraps the division format following the 2022 season. For the Falcons, this will mean playing the Rams and Cowboys annually and shuffling the deck among the other nine teams. In the three-year window revealed, the Falcons play every other team twice, once each at home and on the road. This replaces the division format, which saw Air Force face its Mountain Division opponents (Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming) each season and play teams from the other side in a two-years-on, two-years-off cycle. - Colorado Springs Gazette

Baylor's Dillon Doyle may not be the second coming of Kordell Stewart, but he slashed between two sides of the football rather nicely in 2021. Not only did the linebacker rank second on the Bears with 91 tackles, but he also made several key plays on off ense as a part-time fullback. He even scored a pair of touchdowns in a win over BYU. So, could Doyle's success as a two-way threat lead to Baylor experimenting with more guys going both ways in 2022, at least in certain situations? They're not about to r ule it out. "We have a history of that, right? (Running back) Abram Smith was a linebacker, I played a little bit of offense last year," Doyle said. "But I think those questions will be answered as needs arise. But it's not out of the question."Ba ylor coach Dave Aranda said that he envisions that Doyle will continue to have a role offensively in his senior season, even while maintaining his myriad defensive responsibilities. As for whether Doyle will have buddies in that regard, it remains to be seen, Aranda said. "There wasn't a bunch of that in the spring. I think there'll be more of that in the fall, with our complete team," Aranda said. "We've got a few guys among the young guys who could play in various spots (both ways). So we'll be excite d to see that develop." - Waco Tribune Herald

Bru McCoy has dropped his legal action challenging a 2021 emergency order that removed him from the USC campus a few days after a felony domestic violence arrest involving an ex-girlfriend. McCoy, a talented wide receiver from Santa Ana Mater Dei High, t ransferred to Tennessee in May. He played for USC as a freshman in 2020 but sat out 2021 because he was barred from campus. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell L. Beckloff dismissed the case Tuesday, four days after McCoy made the request in a cour t filing. McCoy had filed the legal action in August, stating that the university had no evidence to support its contention that McCoy posed an immediate threat to the physical health or safety of anyone and that his indefinite suspension was not support ed by the facts of the case.USC had kept the suspension in place through the 2021 season even though the Los Angeles County district attorney's office declined to file charges in August, citing insufficient evidence in a case it referred to as "he said, she said domestic violence." McCoy and his accuser met in high school and dated periodically since. The incident that led to his arrest for domestic violence occurred at his off-campus apartment July 24, 2021. In the woman's application for a temp orary restraining order against McCoy last August, she wrote that McCoy "kicked and punched me multiple times in the ribs, strangled my neck then head butted me in the nose fracturing it, spit in my face repeatedly, pinned me down and used my arms to for ce me to hit myself in the face and head." - Los Angeles Times

Tech fans watched Tyree Wilson look like a man among boys in the first game of his Tech career, against Texas in the 2020 conference opener, and they saw him flash dominance again in the last game of the 2021 season when he was named the Red Raiders' def ensive outstanding player of the game. They just need to see the dominance on a week-in, week-out basis. NFL scouts will be paying close attention to Wilson this year, his fourth season in college, so this should be the year he puts it all together. No r eason he can't be the first Tech player with double-digit sacks since Pete Robertson in 2014. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
