Georgia Southern's J.D. King was making a run to an outstanding season in 2020 when it was cut short by a torn ACL in his left knee in the seventh game. A combination of a power and speed back with the ability to run inside and outside the tackles, King still earned All-Sun Belt Conference honorable mention honors. King had surgery and rehabilitated the knee, missing spring and fall practice sesssions. After sitting out the first three games of the 2021 slate, he made his return on Sept. 25 against Louisiana.

King saw only limited action, appearing in four games and was able to redshirt and plan a return for a sixth year this fall. That plan has changed, as King announced on his Twitter account Tuesday that he has retired from playing football. "It is with a humble heart that I would like to announce my retirement from the game I love," the post read. "My body and my mind tell me it is time to take my next step in life." He played in 12 games in 2019, starting six, and made All-Sun Belt honorable mention after tallying 804 yards and eight TDs on 185 carries. King started the first seven games in 2020 before the knee injury against Troy cost him the remainder of that contest and the next six. He finished with 116 carries for 625 yards and five TDs. - Savannah Morning News

Offensive lineman Amarius Mims returned after spring practices after putting his name in the transfer portal. The Bulldogs welcomed back happily the former five-star recruit. "He's done a tremendous job," Smart said. "He's victim to what every kid is. Opportunity vs. grinding it out, fighting it out and working his way up. He was doing really well in the spring and then he had an injury and from practice seven or eight on and that was tough. That missed time affected his ability to go out there and fight for playing time. He's had a tremendous work ethic since returning, he's been really positive since returning. He's still athletically gifted and he seems to have a better grasp of what we're doing offensively. The biggest thing with him is staying healthy." - Athens Daily Banner

Vanderbilt football coach Clark Lea alluded to his ultimate goal as the coach of the Commodores. "But it's because of (Chancellor Daniel Diermeier and AD Candice Lee's) support that we're aiming to build the best football program in the country at Vanderbilt University," Lea said Tuesday at SEC Media Days, "where we have the best school in the best city in the best conference with the best facilities on the horizon." He later said again with more pointed language: "We know in time Vanderbilt football will be the best program in the country." Both quotes were tucked into a 17-minute opening statement for Lea at the main podium at SEC Media Days. In his first year at Vanderbilt, Lea's Commodores went 2-10 and winless in the SEC. That included an opening-week loss to FCS East Tennessee State.

Vandy can be one of the better programs in the SEC - consecutive nine-win seasons in the James Franklin era a decade ago can speak to that - but the best program in the country? That's a very lofty goal. Lea's comments about the work it'll take to get there have not changed from Year 1 to Year 2. It's going to take a lot to get the Vanderbilt Commodores to the upper echelon of the top conference in college football. "As I said a year ago, there are no cheat codes, shortcuts, no hacks that will allow this to happen overnight," Lea said. "This is still about going the long, hard way, independent of the trends and headlines generating the most attention right now in college football." - Tennessean

University of Utah quarterback Cam Rising showed what he could do last season after transferring from Texas and being forced to sit out a year. The results were more than impressive: After taking over as the Utes' starting QB midway through the team's third game, Rising threw for 2,493 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding 499 rushing yards and six more touchdowns. He put up a QBR rating of 84.2, per ESPN's metrics, which ranked sixth nationally and is the best among Pac-12 quarterbacks returning this season.

He also led the Utes to their first Pac-12 championship and Rose Bowl appearance. Could Utah's Cam Rising be a first-round NFL draft pick next year? That kind of production has the junior signal-caller getting national attention, including being named to the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Award watch lists this week. Some, like ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. earlier this offseason, believe that 2022 could be the year Rising rises to the occasion and makes himself one of the top NFL quarterback prospects next spring. - Deseret News
