Gosder Cherilus |
OT |
Boston College |
(From Chiefs who acquired pick, two 3rds, and a 6th round pick in 2008 draft with Vikings in exchange for DE Jared Allen and a 6th round pick, April 23, 2008.) |
Draft Scout Says: The Lions may have been surprised to see Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo taken ahead of them, but they regrouped quickly in dropping down a few spots, adding to their picks in the 3rd and 5th round, and still addressing their longtime greatest need -- th e offensive line. Cherilus lacks the footwork to play at left tackle, but his size and physicality makes him a perfect candidate for right tackle.

Jordon Dizon |
OLB |
Colorado |
|
Draft Scout Says: Last year the Lions surprised with the selection of Boise State safety Gerald Alexander. This year Jordon Dizon was the surprising Detroit pick of the second round. While he lacks the elite athleticism scouts are looking for, his production while at Colo rado shows his ability. A few years ago NFLDraftScout.com was among the few to characterize Seattle's drafting of Lofa Tatupu as a strong pick. Dizon, like Tatupu lacks the size/speed numbers, but he ranks among the draft's most instinctive defenders and reliable open-field tacklers.

*Kevin Smith |
RB |
Central Florida |
(From Dolphins) |
Draft Scout Says: In trading up to get Kevin Smith, the Lions made a statement about their running game. The nation's leading rusher in 2007, Smith is a big back with a unique blend of vision, agility, and deceptive speed.

Andre Fluellen |
DT |
Florida State |
(Lions acquired pick and CB Leigh Bodden from Browns for DT Shaun Rogers, March 1, 2008.) |
Draft Scout Says: Possessing a quick first step inside, Andre Fluellen has the burst for the three-technique defensive tackle position the Lions were looking to add with the trade of Shaun Rogers. Fluellen, a much ballyhooed prep prospect, struggled to live up to his pote ntial and the expectations while with the Seminoles, but he has the tools to surprise.

Cliff Avril |
OLB |
Purdue |
(From Cowboys) |
Draft Scout Says: Needing pure pass rushers, the Lions added a classic 'tweener in Cliff Avril in the third round. The latest in a long line of former Purdue defensive ends that come into the league and surprise as pass rushing DEs and OLBs, Avril enjoyed a strong week of practice at the Senior Bowl and at the Combine.
