 DeVonta Smith, Alabama, Player News

  08/17/21 - FS DeVonta SmithSr/2025, Alabama, 6-0, 194 (DS#999 FS) + More +

When Alabama fans pour into Bryant-Denny Stadium for the Tide's home opener Sept. 11 and start thumbing through the game program, a name might look out of place. DeVonta Smith. One of the most decorated players in Alabama history should be making his NFL debut a day later in Atlanta, making it unlikely the graduated 2020 Heisman Trophy winner will be participating in what will likely be a rout of FCS opponent Mercer. Instead, meet the new DeVonta Smith: a freshman defensive back from Ohio who wears No. 27.

Smith -- listed as an inch shorter (6-feet) and 10 pounds heavier (185) than his record-breaking predecessor -- was a summer enrollee who opened fall camp with the safeties. Junior Jordan Battle had the privilege of practicing against the elder Smith the past two seasons and knows the same nickname cannot be used twice. "We try to shy away from calling him Smitty," he said Tuesday, "Because you know there's only one Smitty out there." Ohio's Smith initially committed to Ohio State before flipping to Alabama. The Cincinnati native was ranked as a four-star prospect and No. 257 nationally in 247 Sports' composite rankings. - Birmingham News
