WEEK 1 BIG SKY DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Rex Connors, UC Davis (DB, Sr., Pleasant Grove, Utah),...Big Sky Preseason MVP Rex Connors officially opened his season with another big performance, as he led UC Davis to a 31-24 comeback win over Utah Tech. The senior racked up 15 tackles, with eight being solos, and one pass breakup. Connors called all the defensive plays on the night, as he aided in stopping the Utah Tech offense in five consecutive drives to close out the comeback win. The weekly honor i s the first for Connors since winning it twice in 2022. With the 15 tackles, Connors now sits 12 tackles away from hitting a mark of 291 career tackles which will set the career program record for total tackles. 2022 ALL-BIG SKY FIRST TEAM: DB Rex Connors (UCD),...Connors proved to be not only one of the top freshmen in the conference but in the entire country as he led the league and was sixth in the country with 0.50 interceptions per game, swiping five passes on the season. The Jerry Rice Award finalist led the team with 92 tackles, 56 solo stops and added four tackles for loss. SEPT 12 FEDEX GROUND FCS NATIONAL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: Rex Connors, UC Davis, S, R-Fr., 6-1, 203, Pleasant Grove, Utah,...Connors was all over the field while the visitors from the Big Sky fell just short of second-ranked South Dakota State 24-22 in a r ematch of a 2021 first-round playoff game. His career-high 17 tackles, including 10 solos, were the most by an Aggie since at least 2007, and he also intercepted two passes. Just after his first pick in the first quarter, he made a solo tackle on each of SDSU's next four offensive plays. Connors racked up 17 total tackles, with 10 being solos, and picked off two passes for UC Davis as the Aggies dropped a hard-fought 24-22 contest at second-ranked South Dakota State. The 17 tackles were the most for UC Davis in a game since at least 200 7, while the total ranks as the fourth-highest in the FCS this season. Connors was also named the FedEx Ground FCS National Freshman Player of the Week for his efforts.
