Samari Collier, Coastal Carolina, Player News

Samari Collier threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for 75 yards and two more scores to lead Coastal Carolina past Marshall 44-27 on Thursday night for its third straight victory. Coastal Carolina trailed 27-17 with 12:46 left in the third quarter before scoring 27 unanswered points. Marshall was undone by five turnovers, including one on four straight drives in the second half.

Collier capped a three-and two-play drive - about a minute apart - with a 69-yard touchdown to Malcolm Gillie and a 17-yarder to Bryson Graves to go ahead 31-27. Collier's 1-yard touchdown run ended a three-play, 40-yard drive with 8:08 remaining to cap the scoring. Dominic Knicely added a rushing touchdown and 76 yards on five carries for Coastal Carolina (5-3, 4-1 Sun Belt), which has scored 40-plus in four conference games this season. Kian Afrookhteh made all three of his field goals, with a long of 42 yards. Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was 21 of 36 for 153 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Marshall (4-4, 2-2). Antwan Roberts rushed for 134 yards on just 15 carries. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Illinois opened fall training camp Saturday. It did so without redshirt freshman quarterback Samari Collier, who announced he was entering the transfer portal after one season with the Illini. Collier had already been removed from the Illinois roster within an hour of his transfer announcement. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound quarterback out of Dallas did not appear in any games in 2021 for the Illini. Collier was third on the depth chart during spring practices behind Tommy DeVito and walk-on Ryan Johnson, and would have been fourth if Art Sitkowski hadn't been held out in the spring. Illinois will enter the 2022 season with seven quarterbacks on its roster. DeVito and Sitkowski are at the top of the depth chart and are followed by Johnson, true freshman Donovan Leary and walk-ons Kirkland Michaux, Jake Huber and Jameson Sheehan. - News Gazette Tribune

Second-year Illinois quarterback Samari Collier entered the transfer portal, according to Jeremy Werner of 247 Sports. Collier will look for a fresh start after seeing the writing on the wall about his playing time for the upcoming year, with both Tommy DeVito and Artur Sitkowski ahead of him on the depth chart. The Dallas product had yet to see any playing time with the Illini, and will now likely look for a situation in which he can jump in and compete for snaps immediately. - 247Sports.com/Rotowire.com
